Slew Can just edges the favorite in the Grade I Reuben Garr

This year’s edition of the Grade I Reuben Garr Memorial was not the most loaded in talent, but it was certainly a very entertaining event. Slew Can took the lead entering the stretch and was able to just held off the late surge the favorite Manifest Destiny and a recovery effort from Rahy Breaks Away (JPN) to win the race, which was one of the features this weekend in the Big Apple. The winner is out of mega sire Danzig in a Seattle Slew mare and improved his lifetime record to 36-15-5-5, with earnings of $1,011,902 for trainer gsrprize.

At the start, Dom Tendencies, Dubeye and Rahy Breaks Away (JPN) were the ones in charge of the early flight, and they set very fast early fractions. With two furlongs to go, Rahy Breaks Away (JPN) took the lead and drew away from both of his fellow early pace setters, but from the middle of the group the winner Slew Can and Manifest Destiny slowly gained ground. Then, with less than a furlong to go, Slew Can went to the front, but Manifest Destiny was closing fast, but a little too late for taking away the win from the Danzig son. The time of the race was an average 1:35:1/5 for the mile distance.
