With Wayne Newton expected to sing the national anthem, the grand stands are full for today’s running of The Barb’s Shaadi Special.  A short field of six line up at the gate for a share of the estimated $65,000 purse.  The Neveda desert has once again proven to be hot and sunny (big surprise there) and the grass infield has been rated firm.  So put down your dice and bingo markers and double down on today race preview.

PP1   18/1 KIWI MOUNTAIN

DYNAFORMER x KINGMAMBO x EL GRAN SENOR

Trainer:  spewu

Jockey:  P Campbell ( 65 – 5 – 7 – 4 – 8% )

Bred originally by kbsweet, (who last we heard was away at college breaking one heart after another with that killer smile) Kiwi Mountain comes in as our long shot.  However, I can’t really see much difference between him and the next choice at 6/1.  He has been competitive while running against allowance company but he may have bitten off more than he can chew.  However, with solid speed numbers and a short field, he might make a good payoff by including him on the back end of your trifecta ticket.

PP2   9/5 NAIL ROGER

PLAIN DEALING x CARO(IRE) x TARBOOSH

Trainer:  thefifth

Jockey:  V Jef ( 211 – 44 – 32 – 26 – 21% )

Our morning line favorite, Nail Roger, has his trainer thefifth looking to score another stake win.  Starting late in his career as a six year old, this Caro(IRE) grandson hit the ground running and has managed to pick more than his share of checks.  Coming off a stakes win two races back at six furlongs, he’s looking for a repeat performance.  However, even though he’s been competitive at this distance, he has shown numerous times where he’s come up short, wishing for more track.  With a come from the back style of running, I just think he’s better suited going back to the classic or even a stab at the marathon distances.  He’s closes with a furry but with only 6.5 furlongs to work with, it will have to be slow pace for him to catch the front runners.

PP3   5/2 JENA TAILYA

DIXIELAND HEAT x SUPREMO x CAVEAT

Trainer:  chaseadar

Jockey:  F Holmes ( 191 – 23 – 22 – 33 – 12% )

Straight out of 18 and over video rack, the aptly named Jena Tailya is hoping to rebound after a win last time our in a NW2s allowance prep race.  He has shown some good speed at this distance, but you have to wonder if age and wear and tear have started to settle in.  His best races have come either by taking the lead or sitting just off the pace but stamina entering the home stretch has been a challenge.  A good showing here may be just enough to hold Nail Roger at bay.  It’s getting late in his career and if the time comes chaseadar may be able make a few extra bucks renting him out to Larry Flint or the Spice Channel.

PP4   4/1 K’S IMPEKKABLE

DANEHILL x MR. PROSPECTOR x ROBERTO

Trainer:  ledwith

Jockey:  M Cooper ( 234 – 54 – 42 – 29 – 23% )

The land of 10,000 lakes not suiting him, veteran trainer ledwith has chosen to ship his Danehill runner to Nevada where he can bask in the sun watching his pony run while enjoying $1.99 lobster and endless bottles of scotch.  K’s Impekkable been consistent over the last year and with a short field, looks to snatch a piece of the prize money and grab his second stakes victory.  Look for him to sit mid pack and make a move around the turn.  Of interest however, is the fact that this horse has shown a tremendous liking to an off track and I don’t know if the Neveda desert was the place to be.

PP5   7/2 ROYALLY RED

STEPHEN GOT EVEN x ROYAL AL x TRUE COLORS

Trainer:  mig

Jockey:  T Henley ( 33 – 1 – 4 – 2 – 3% )

Breaking out of number five shoot, Royally Red hopes to impress his trainer with his second stakes win this year.  In what seems like a smart purchase in the auction, mig took some time to figure out exactly what he had on his hands.  An obvious miss for the other trainers, he could have been bought at the beginning of the year for $25,000 in a claimer.  He followed that win there with a starter allowance win and a victory in The Slew Deposit Challenge.  In that race, he managed to steal the victory sitting way back of the pack and closed with a vengeance sporting a 105 rating in the process.   He made a few handicapper happy going off at 11/1.  He shortens up here today and I wonder if he will be able to close in time to catch the front of the pack.  Like Nail Roger, he may be wishing for an extra furlong or two to work with.

PP6   6/1 CJ UNBRIDLED

GREEN DESERT x UNBRIDLED x AFFIRMED

Trainer:  cjwalker

Jockey:  P Spielman ( 41 – 7 – 4 – 1 – 17% )

This Green Desert son showed some promise early in his three year old campaign but he didn’t manage to find the winner’s circle for the remainder of year.  He may just be a late developer but has yet to prove that he’s able to compete at this level even finding the allowance ranks hard to excel in.  At 6/1 he may be a bit of an under-lay and not a good investment.
