Vintage Mare Shows Them How It’s Done!

The Dodge This Stakes
Grade III
A mile and one quarter on Firm Turf
$150,000
Fillies and mares, 3 years old and up

JOE’S ANGELS ran a nearly perfect race to capture the crown in the Dodge This Stakes today at Queensland. She and jockey Zariz made it look so easy that they nearly pulled up and breezed down the final half of the stretch, perhaps saving some energy for another day.

Even in her 45th race, this six year old Septieme Ciel mare showed she still has plenty of speed left as she ran away easily in this race. The crowd looked on approvingly as she raised her lifetime earnings to over $1.6 million. She always seems to crack the top of the pack and adds this to her multiple Graded Stakes wins. You have to wonder how much longer this fine looking brown mare can hold up at this pace. She sure has no signs of slowing down.

STAR INDY jumped out to the early lead and kept the fractions manageable for the rest of the pack. She led all the way until the final turn when she was passed by the winner and eventually held on for fourth after fading in the stretch. SPOOKY BALLET made a nice move in the stretch but didn’t have enough to catch the leader and you have to wonder if her big race in her previous outing took a bit out of her. She finished second over CATONAHOTTINROOF who finished strong after laying back from her usual front running style with good results.

As I mentioned, no one would be totally surprised if JOE’S ANGELS hung up her saddle and headed to the breeding shed to start a family but if she keeps on running like she did today, that may have to be put off for awhile. Just one of those decisions that all successful career women have to make!
