Knightmare’s Breeding Corner

Prized (4976)

The recent success of Brass Hat has put Prized in a spot light of sorts. He has enjoyed very good success in real life but and he has produced a couple of nice older runners in the sim but his recent crops have not been good at all. One of the main reasons could be the difference in how he is being bred by sim players.

Real Life- Prized is by Kris S. His dam sire is My Daddy George and his dam’ dam sire is Petare (ARG). The dam side of his pedigree is on the obscure side but the combination created a fine race horse. Prized won the Breeder’s Cup Turf at three, also winning the Swaps G2 on dirt that same year. He went turf to dirt often and had success. He won nine of seventeen races lifetime and over two million in earnings.

His dosage index is a stamina heavy 1.32. He has produced twenty seven black type winners in eleven crops which is pretty good considering he only averages about forty foals a year. He produced the older female champion in New Zealand Prized Gem (NZ). Brass Hat is his highest earning horse. Brass Hat won a couple of graded stakes as a three year old and this year at five he has won the G1 Donn Handicap, G2 New Orleans Handicap and went over to Dubai and settled for a second in the World Cup almost out lasting Electrocutionist.

Raise a Native line sires have been used much more with Prized in real life than Northern Dancer line sires. In a couple of his off spring inbreeding to Hail to Reason is present and Prized has the type of pedigree that sets up for 4X4 inbreeding to Hail to Reason and also Princequillo.

Sim Life – Currently Prized has forty nine active sim runners. On those forty nine two were stakes winners but one is eleven years of age and the other is eight. Of his sixteen allowance winners only one is under the age of five. Clearly his older runners are the ones putting up the solid statistics for him to this point. In his older runners he has been used with dam sires such as Gone West, A.P. Indy, Riverman, Unbridled, Icecapade, Chiefs Crown, Red Ransom and Lear Fan.

He has one retired graded stakes winner by an Alysheba mare. He has a couple of retired graded placed runners one by Danzig the other by Time for a Change (Damascus). He has two other retired listed stakes winners one by Raise a Native and the other by Nureyev.

What is interesting about his three and four year olds is the fact he has still been used on occasion with a nice dam sire but those dam sires are not by scratch breedings but game mares. A couple really sucked and the jury is still out on another few. Past the one or two nice dam sires each year the other ten or so runners in those crops are mostly bargain sires.  The development of his runners leads me to believe his runners develop later than most sires.

Breeding Suggestions –  With so much stamina in Prized’s pedigree it could explain why he has been bred to the speedier Raise a Native line in real life. I really like the idea of inbreeding to Hail to Reason who quite frankly is right there are among the most influential sires in recent history. How can you go wrong with the Northern Dancer line as well when using Prized. He has the potential to produce well on both surfaces and that can be exciting.

Seattle Slew line sires might be a solid choice but Seattle Slew himself has not worked out the few times he has been bred to Prized. I really like other Raise a Native line sires besides Mr. Prospector and sons like Affirmed, Majestic Light, Alydar and Sensitive Prince.

Those Nasrullah line sires also would seem to fit well. Riverman, Blushing Groom (FR), and Never Bend. The Damascus line has blended well with Prized in the past so should get some consideration. Buckpasser line should also blend pretty well with Prized.

For inbreeding to Hail to Reason would use a grandson of Hail to Reason in the dam sire spot or use a son of Hail to Reason in the dam’s dam sire slot. In choosing grandsons avoid sons of Roberto because we do not want to inbreed to Roberto in this case. Good grandsons are Devil’s Bag, Cure the Blues, Halo’s Image, Saint Ballado, Southern Halo, Sunday Silence, Sunny’s Halo, and Temperance Hill. Use a son that is not Roberto in the dam’s dam sire slot like Bold Reason, Halo, Mr. Leader, and Stop the Music.

Prized (4976) X Affirmed (83) X Blushing Groom (FR) (669)

Prized (4976) X Danehill (1494) X Damascus (1457)

I wanted to add one more option inbreeding 5X5 to Nashua with a son of Mr. Prospector. This breeding is quite affordable as well.

Prized (4976) X Numerous (4499) X Spend a Buck (6136)

Bargain Bred –  Prized has not produced a real good bargain bred yet. Prized does get down to around forty BPs at the end of the week so is probably a solid candidate for bargain breeding.

What to Expect – Seems that the stamina Prized has causes his runners to develop later than your average sire. I would not expect a whole lot from his two year olds because he has not really produced good two year olds in real life or sim life. Prized himself really came into his own later as a three year old and that seems to be a typical pattern for many of his good runners in real life and sim life.

I suspect he will produce more dirt runners than turf runners but he is very capable of producing on both surfaces. Maybe you can get lucky and get a runner that runs on both surfaces. He also should produce route runners more than sprinters so be sure to stretch out your Prized off spring even if they run up front in sprints.

Hope you enjoyed the look into Prized, as always if you have any questions, comments, or sire requests please drop me a line at mcbwildcat@aol.com. Be sure to reference the Breeding Corner. Good luck and good breeding!
