G1 California Draws Four Of The Top Ten Long Distance Females

Welcome to sunny California for the G1 California, a 14 furlong marathon for 4 year and older fillies and mares on the dirt track for a purse of $500,000. A dozen of the best distance females have gathered for this race, including four of the top ten in the division. Let’s take a look at the runners.

In post one at 13/1 is Jaded Terms owned by slewokie. She is a 5yo by Jade Hunter and is out of the G1 winning Private Terms mare Granny Well. She spent much of the last two years running on turf, but recently moved back to dirt and stretched out further than she had before. She won her first stakes two races ago, going two miles, so she definitely can handle the distance here. This is a real step up in class, but she has plenty of it in her pedigree. H. D. Hicks(14%) will be her pilot.

In post two at 5/1 is Sacrilege owned by slwcityslw. She is ranked #6 in the long dirt division. She is a 6yo by A.P. Indy and is based on an Unbridled horse. This mare likely needs little introduction to most readers. She finished second in the 14f dirt Equinics race in her last start. In the Equinics before that, she won the 14f turf race. Yes, that’s right, she’s a G1 winner on both surfaces and has won more than a million in purses on each surface, with total winnings of more than 3 million. I could go on and on, this mare is truly a legend on the track at 12f or more. M. Staples(12%), always one of the top jockeys here, gets the mount.

In post three at 9/1 is Eek A Cat owned by singhis. She is a 5yo by E Dubai and is based on the stakeswinning Storm Cat horse Late Arrival. She is a G1 winner who has slowly stretched out, finally going beyond classic distances in her last four starts. She is a pure frontrunner who once ran a 120, so there’s no doubt that she’s fast, and without any other real speedsters in here, she’s a threat to get out front and take it all the way. A. Lewis(9%) is in the saddle.

In post four at 18/1 is Brandy’s Dream owned by trifecta. She is a 4yo by Awesome Again out of an Unbridled mare. She is just a young thing compared to many in this field, but she wasted no time in finding her niche, winning two long stakes last year as a sophomore. She has yet to break 100, but is likely still maturing, and has just the jockey to complement her running style in N. Bonus(13%).

In post five at 9/1 is Xtremely Awesome owned by n2racing. She is 4yo by Awesome Again out of a Kris S. mare. She has done well for her new owner since she was purchased in the auction, winning two of three, both at 12 furlongs. She was injured in her only attempt beyond 12, but the distance shouldn’t be a problem for her. She already has six stakes victories in her career. F. Allen(14%) will be riding her.

In post six at 4/1 is Xtremely Gold owned by grracers. She is ranked #4 in the division and is a 5yo by Touch Gold out of an Unbridled mare. She is a multiple G1 winner, and won the G1 14f Angel Cordero Jr. in the Equinics in her last start. Her career has been nothing short of amazing. She has finished worse than second only twice in 19 career starts, winning 13 of them, including three G1s. It’s no surprise that top jockey F. Gossett(20%) has chosen to ride this super mare today.

In post seven at 15/1 is Incredible Rip owned by tg1. She is a 4yo by Gone West out of a Summer Squall mare. She’s been somewhat up and down in her career, but she has won stakes at 12, 14 and 16 furlongs, so she can certainly stay the distance. If she can gain a bit more consistency, she should be able to run with this crowd. The question today is, which race will she run. Mo Turner(16%) is her jockey.

In post eight at 64/1 is Famous Frog owned by gene. She is a 4yo by Vindication out of a Deputy Minister mare. She is lightly raced, and certainly talented, having won a stakes in just her second career start. She has only routed once, and was obviously injured in that one, as she hasn’t run in quite some time. This is a very tough spot to try and come back, and I hope she makes it through without another injury. I would like to see her try a couple of route allowances before jumping up to this level. R. Simcox(17%) is a smart jockey, and won’t pressure her if she isn’t strong enough yet to handle it.

In post nine at 5/1 is Distorted Wife owned by buytapia. She is a 5yo by Distorted Humor out of a Slewacide mare. She is a multiple stakeswinner and is graded placed. She ran in the Equinics for Ireland in her last start, going 12f. She has won two stakes at 14f, and once ran a 105 at this distance, so the ability is certainly there, if she can rebound from her disappointing race last time out. Unfortunately, R. Young(0%) does not provide any confidence. Her owner, on the other hand, had this to say,”Cal has been her best fitted track so far, I am confident I will get first.”

In post ten at 13/1 is Drum Beat(GB) owned by colonelbr3. She is a 4yo by Beat Hollow(GB) out of an Ela-Mana-Mou(Ire) mare. If that isn’t a distance pedigree, I don’t know what is. Heck, this gal won her maiden at 12f in her second career start. She recently won three stakes in a row, one at 13f and two at 16f, before finishing third last time out on turf. Perhaps the turf to dirt angle will give her a boost here. L. Jones(23%) is a hot jockey right now, and would love to bring this one home.

In post eleven at 5/1 is The Divorce owned by jarrod2. She is a 4yo by Unbridled’s Song and is out of a Gone West mare. She is ranked #9 in the division, despite having won only one race in her career. However, her last four races were G1, and she hit the board in three of them. She ran second in the 12f G1 at the Equinics last time out, so she has proven that she can run with the best. M. Billig(10%) will be her jockey today.

Rounding out the field is the #1 ranked long dirt mare, the great Galloping Ghost. She goes off at 8/1 and is owned by tejanorun. She is a 6yo by Wild Again out of an Easy Goer mare. After 50 races, she has slowed down a bit, but she has had quite a career. She was G1 placed while still a 2yo, and went on to win five G1s. Four of those five were against males. She has appeared in two Breeder’s Bowls. She is not done yet, though. She has always raced best at 14-16 furlongs. T. Bates(8%) is having a bit of an off year, but this mare is all class.

That is our field. Quite an outstanding matchup of several of the top females in this division. But there are several others here who could certainly steal the race. This will be an exciting feature for California racegoers, that is certain. Good luck to all the runners, and may they all come home sound.
