New Storm Rolls Over Italy In Roy Higgins
The yielding turf and the full field seemed like huge obstacles for a closer to overcome. Indeed, through most of Saturday’s G1 Roy Higgins, it looked as if Tete The Undead(Aus), who had gone to the front right from the start, would lead the field across the finish line. And it would have happened that way, but for a small brown colt who came flying up the stretch as if he’d been shot from a rocket. It was New Storm, from the EAAA Racing residency, and he ran the race of his life, scoring a personal best 113 speed figure and his first G1 win. And what a way to do it, in the Equinics, against a full 20-horse field and some of the top names in the division. The 4yo by Storm Cat jumped up to #7 in the turf classic division with this victory. Tete The Undead(Aus), running for Viking Racing, held on to win the silver with a 110 speed figure. Preferred Power, who many handicappers, myself included, had tabbed as the most likely winner, rallied to earn a bronze for The CR Racers. His final speed figure was a 107. Congratulations to the winners, it was a great day for racing.
