Ladies Ready to Fire in the S. Cannon (IRE)

A high-class field of six will take to the good dirt track for the S. Cannon (IRE) Stakes in Ontario this week.  It ranges from a stakes debutante to a former Breeders Bowl (Gr. I) winner, and should provide exciting competition.

  1. Noelle’s Oreo G (7) 3-0-0 $20,520, a 4-year-old filly from the zz stable is making her second stakes attempt; her first was a 9th place finish at 1 ½ mile.  Prior to that she’d won two straight allowance races at 1 1/8 mile, with a 102 speed figure in the most recent.  She’s been very lightly raced, but is a true blueblood, by Forty Niner x Storm Bird x Secretariat.  12/1

  1. Making Eyes At Me (16) 6-7-1 $185,677, a 4-year-old by Aldebaran x Pulpit x Summer Squall, representing mccoy, comes in from a 2nd place finish in the Duketu Bonanza Stakes in her last out, and a respectable lifetime high speed figure of 106 in her previous race.  Her only other attempt at 1 ¼ miles was a mid-pack finish in a Grade III, which was a tough level for her.  She has another previous stakes-placing under her belt as well.  5/2

  1. Seven-year-old Suzy Jinsky, by Danzig x Nijinsky II x Nureyev, has a stellar record of (56) 16-12-9 $2,904,180; trainer snag has done a good job keeping her going.  She may have lost a step or two from her Breeders Bowl Distaff (Gr. I) win as a 3yo, but she had speed to spare in those days.  She’s been in the money in her last 8 stakes starts, and should be good enough to be right there in today’s race.  3/1

  1. rrr offers up Seascape, a 6-year-old daughter of Capetown x Alydar x Native Admiral with a (27) 6-7-4 $245,600 record.  She skipped her 4 year old campaign entirely, making her stakes debut last year at 5.  She won two stakes and had 4 additional stakes placings last year.  This will be her seasonal debut.  9/5

  1. High On Whisky at 7/2 is a 5-year-old mare by High Yield x Miswaki x Chieftain from the smedley string.  This mare had seven stakes placings before she tossed in a clunker at 1 5/8 miles, which can probably be thrown out.  She’s shortening up considerably today, and should be well rested.  7/2

  1. Blackwatch Plaid (19) 3-2-4 $85,583 makes her stakes debut today, but this could be a tough place for her to start.  Still, she won her only other try at this distance, and also won her last out with a lifetime best 99 speed figure.  Her dam, Sadler’s OK, won 5 races in her career, and trainer stakeclaim has a talented filly here.  She’s a 4-year-old by Carson City x Sadler’s Wells x Pine Bluff.  7/1
