Cosmo Girl wins Silver Spoon(G2) photo
Hong Kong– Theoc2 stable has quite a looker on their hands with their Storm Cat daughter, Cosmo Girl. The turf freshman filly ran her impressive record to 4 of 5 lifetime with a thrilling victory in the Grade 2 $225,000 Silver Spoon Juvenile.
Cosmo Girl has done just about everything asked of her. The filly didn’t get to the races till summertime when she finished second in her debut at California. Just a few weeks later, she found herself in the Maiden Special Weight winner’s circle and has since never looked back. ‘Cosmo proceeded to add two listed stakes sprints to her resume, before going off as the honest favorite in the Silver Spoon.
And this mile event was a real test for Cosmo Girl. With a Storm Cat x Gone West pedigree, stamina questions sure abounded. A few Breeder’s Bowl Juvenile Turf Filly performers provided quality competition on paper as well.
Additionally, there were graded stakes runners including dkyoung4’s furious starlet, Dark Flash(IRE). The stakes-winning Lohnro(IRE) daughter was dual graded placed already from eight outings — half of those starts were around two-turns too. The stalker proved to be the one to beat down the lane.
Out of the gate, a pace fray developed between longshots, including sjmeola3’s Bahri filly Sun In Action (5th in BB Juvenile Turf Filly). Meanwhile, Dark Flash(IRE) and Cosmo Girl relaxed in midpack, just a length or so from each other through the opening half-mile.
Jockey Valentino Ching aboard Dark Flash(IRE) sent his filly first, garnering the lead from united’s longshot pace dueler Prabha(AUS) by the top of the stretch. On the other hand, Stefano Zerr bided his time with Cosmo Girl, saving his filly’s late kick for a sweltering final-furlong run.
“‘Cosmo ran like a banshee,” jockey Zerr said. “We had to split through the determined pacesetters, but I had a clear beat on the runner-up (Dark Flash). My filly ran like a champ and we got there with a jump or two to spare.”
Although the tote board called for a “Hold All Tickets, Please” photo inquiry, the race replay clearly declared Cosmo Girl the winner by a 1/4-length. Graz628’s Bella(IRE) gamely closed from last place to pick up the show spot, only 1 1/2 lengths behind the winner.
Cosmo Girl’s final time for the flat-n-grassy mile was a decent 1:36 1/5. She passed both her graded stakes debut and the two-turns benchmark with flying colors.
‘Cosmo now ranks 10th in the Freshman Turf Filly Classic Division. Remember her name…. we’ll see more of this royal bred down the road.
