Sydney Mile 2012

Hi all and welcome to lovely Victoria for the 13th running of the Sydney Mile. The forecast is for a fine sunny day so as always a big crowd is expected to see the 3 stakes races, but more importantly the 3 big group1 races. I will cover the first of the big 3 races, which has attracted a good field of nine horses. No matter what we are in for a great day of racing so if you head to the track or watch it on tv good luck to you as there is no clear winner.

Race History:
This race was first run in 2000 when the prize money was $1.5 million and it was run in New South Wales. Not sure why this race was changed to Victoria in 2009 when another 500,000 was added to the prize money. As you can see from past winners there have been different lead up races in order to win this race. The last 2 winners did come out of the G3-Intercontinental Trophy Race Intercontinental Trophy which doesn’t help much here as that race winner isn’t running in this race. The very first winner of this race came off a 7 day rest, but most have had a 28 days rest. History shows that barrier 3 has won the most races followed by 1 and 9 but any barrier can win.

This one is one of the 2 early favourites here today. Loves the distance and is very good at the class, but has been a bit out of form his last 3 starts. The trainer had this to say about him “he hasn’t done a whole lot this year and i am hoping he got a bit of rest and with one run off that rest under his belt that he will fire here. he just didnt seem on lto. He was sharp but didn’t run like he normally does so i think he will be happy in this race with less rest.” Look for him to sit off the pace and finish the race strongly.

This horse is at short odds considering he has never raced at this class. He did finish second in a GRP2 and his last start win in a stakes race was good. Loves the distance but I think he’s only a place chance.

This horse is having his first start at the track and his form at the distance isn’t the best. He is yet to be placed at this class from 4 starts, but he is never far away. I think he will improve here but might just miss the placings.

This horse is at big odds considering his last start, but prehaps the bookies thought it was a one off. Loves the distance and is ok at the class. I think he’ll be storming home, but just fall short.

This one loves to win and can’t argue with his stats at the class and distance. Faded late in a GRP1 over 1700m last start when he was first up from a spell, but look for him to do much better here second up.

This one look good on form but compared to others he hasn’t won much prize money. That usually means he hasn’t run in big races. His only start at this class he was unlucky to finish seventh, but wasn’t far away from the winner. I think he will find this a bit too hard.

This one was going all guns blazing until his last start where he failed big time. Was at 5/1 odds when he found the 2000m to far and faded bad in the straight to finish eight. Will enjoy the drop in distance but won’t appreciate the rise in class. Others look to strong for him to do well here.

This one also loves to win and is in good form. Loves the distance but is yet to win at this class. His last 3 starts have been at allowance races so this is a step up in class form him but going by his odds he must be considered an each way chance.

This one is the other equal favourite and looking at his stats you can see why. Loves the class and distance and is yet to miss a place at the track. One thing I have learnt is never write this horse off as it will bite you in the butt. Looks well placed here and should be hard to beat.
