Spotlight Race-New South Wells

I did not fare well in last week’s Spotlight race in Tasmania as 5-1 Clarinase was able to find a way to wire the field, winning by two for jockey Lawless.  Backers picked up $12.70 for the win.

Finishing second was the favorite High Water Mark, who switched to the dirt for the first time and supported an exacta that paid $37.00 (my third choice).

There was a big gap to Buck That Sheet who walked home to take third and the trifecta kicked out $194.20.   My top pick was Les Squint and she failed terribly, running a flat fourth throughout the race and never being a serious challenger.   Second choice Grandmas Hand finished last, running on dirt for the first time and apparently not liking it much.

So the Spotlight leaves Tasmania and scoots over to New South Wales for this weekend’s race.   Once again, I’ll be reviewing the 11th race which is a maiden race for 2-year olds.  The race is open to fillies and mares going 6 furlongs on the turf.

The race is sponsored by Icbomber6 and this will be a challenge as many are unraced.

1.   Runaway Rock  16-1

Hit the board in debut at 14-1 with solid turf effort finishing second with impressive speed of 74 going 5.5f.   Daughter of Pop Rock who saw 63% of last year’s crop win a race with strong favoring of grass.   Price is very nice and capable of cashing in this time.

2.  Spaced Case   8-1

Out of sire Authorized with 57% of 2011 offspring picking up wins.   G-rated game-dam won only twice in career, both on grass, however, was ITM nearly half the time.  Making first start and I’d like to give her a race to see what she can do…in other words, a toss-up here.

3.  Karaka Samson   97-1

Finished well-back last in debut at steep odds and had winless jockey aboard.   Gets 15% Thompson for mount this time.   One of two children out of first-year sire Meisho Samson and her brother hasn’t performed much better.  Very tough task here and looks doubtful.  Dirt surface may be worth trying.

4.  Nota Bene TB   52-1

Daughter of Beneteau will be making first start.  Beneteau is a first-year sire with 25% of offspring winning a race this season.    Has some decent bloodlines within pedigree and if any of that can surface, she could light the board.

5.  Sadiegirl    73-1

Has one start which was on a wet dirt track where she was very non-competitive.  Lightly used sire Kyllachy has not had huge success with offspring, only one runner from last year’s crop of four has earned a victory.   Not looking promising.

6.  Rebelism    3-1

Race sponsor Icbomber6 brings this nicely bred daughter of Giant Causeway to the starting gate for the first time.   28% of this years 2-year olds have already won a race for this sire.   D-rated game-dam  North of Hell won 8 races, 4 of these came at the age of 2.    Lots of hope surrounds this gal.

7.  Lipstick And Heels   7-2

First time starter out of New Approach who has had 18 horses appear in races, with only one picking up a win…actually, that sole winner has a pair of wins including a non-grade stake win.   Could be a factor.

8.  Sacred Desires   21-1

Showed lots of speed in turf run early last month but couldn’t hold lead, finishing fourth with speed of 60.   Sired by first year mare Shocking who has two winners this year, including a residency stake winner.  Decent pedigree for running on turf and if she improves, the win could be hers.

9.  Redoute Road   4-1

Makes first track appearance as daughter of Redoute’s Choice.   Sire has had high success with 2011’s crop winning 78%.   This year, 13% have already won with one stake winner who hit speed of 84.   I like the dam-sire of Storm Cat and this one could be a powerhouse.

10.  Crying Gal  2-1

Daughter of Street Cry, a sire that already has 39% of this year’s offspring bringing home victories.   Galileo and Kingmambo add strength within the pedigree to this solid chestnut mare.   Very formidable runner.

11.  Enque Line  48-1

Out of G-grade dam-sire Once A Knight who had only one career win on the turf.   First year sire Shomoline has spun off seven horses, none of which have won.   This gal charted a speed of 64 in her sole start finishing fifth at steep odds running 5 furlongs.  Decent race in last and improvement could surprise many.

Anything can happen in these young 2-year old races.    I’m going with Runaway Rock as my top pick as she sported a very nice speed number first time out and could enhance upon that at a very rewarding price.

Crying Gal has very nice bloodlines going, getting second choice.

Several others I like for third, but I’m latching on to Rebelism who gets the top jockey on for the ride.
