Ladies First

Back in January, when MTK was asked about his champion filly, Street Etiquette, he replied that he was undecided whether she should target the Derby or the Oaks. By winning the All Saints Derby-G1, the easy part is over, as the star filly easily handled colts in the Derby lock prep. The race had several other front runners in the field, but she made it look simple. Under a confident ride, she sat off the early pace of Glove World and Royality Note. By the top of the stretch, Royality Note had faded, with Glove World gamely hanging on. With a chirp and a tap of the whip, the daughter of Street Cry was gone. Lucky’s Franklin launched a furious rally from twelfth, but he never threatened the champ, finishing 2 ¼ lengths behind. With that effort, he now sits sixteenth on the win, and will have to wait the outcome of this weekend’s races to see if he is still on the safe side of the bubble. Carry the Mail was third, while an exhausted Glove World was a gutsy fourth. Final time was 1:42, a new stakes record for the All Saints Derby-G1, and earned the leggy miss a sparkling 105 SF.

You couldn’t ask for more out of a Derby prep. I’m sure there will be much for this filly’s connections to think about (colts vs. fillies, 1 ¼ miles vs. 1 1/8 miles, glory vs. immortality), but for right now, they are enjoying a terrific win. Whether Street Etiquette will take a shot at trying to do You See LA one better in the Derby or going for the lillies will be determined in the coming weeks. Congratulations on a well deserved win!
