South African Classic
Grade II / Group 2*CPU – Purse : $375,000
Restricted to 3 Year Olds
9 Furlongs | ~1800 Meters | One Mile and and One Eighth Firm Turf

First I would like to start out with saying; I hope that everyone here in Derbyville/Derbyfever is doing well.  If you or a family member is ill I wish and pray for speedy recoveries.  Globally we have all been affected in some way or form due to the Covid-19 virus.  Stay safe, be cautious and be prepared. This is a difficult time, but we pray that this too shall pass and get better over time.

As many of you know, lots of horse racing in real life has been canceled or seasons postponed.  The Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks for the first time since 1945 (WWII) will not run on the first Saturday in May and has tentatively been rescheduled for the first Saturday in September (Labor Day Weekend).  But here in our sim, the races will continue for now.  So let us take a look at the 3 year old field that will head to the Firm Turf in the G2, South African Classic this Saturday.

Post Position: 1

Horse/Odds: Kitty B  7/1

Sire: Scratch Bred (KITTEN’S JOY x DUBAI MILLENNIUM x THEATRICAL)

Owner: eurobarn

Jockey: T Brewer

This Light Grey Colt has 6 career starts and has never finished worse than second.  He is coming off two straight wins with his last trip coming on 01/18/2020 in a Listed Stakes, Minstrel Jay Turf Special in Tasmania  He went gate to wire in this race to pick up a nice win by 2 ¾ lengths.  He is taking a jump in Class as he prepares for his race on Saturday and will have jockey, T Brewer from Hong Kong in the saddle to take the ride with him as they head to a favorable gate representing the Hoosier Racing residency.

Post Position: 2

Horse/Odds: Teofilotheboxer  6/1

Sire: Scratch Bred (TEOFILO x DUBAI MILLENNIUM x MR. PROSPECTOR)

Owner: thewordstables7

Jockey: D Dowell

This Bay Colt has started off his career nicely and has never yet missed the boards in five lifetime starts.  His last trip came on 02/09/2020 in Victoria when he went 9.5 furlongs in a $48,700 NW3L Allowance of which he crossed the wire in second and was 2 ½ lengths back.  He will again get the services of jockey, D Dowell from Victoria to take to the saddle.  They have paired together several times in the past and will be heading out at post time to represent the GR Simsters residency.

Post Position: 3

Horse/Odds: Sea The Quads  7/1

Sire: Sea The Stars

Owner: rabid9

Jockey: M Bia

This Bay Colt was on a hot streak and had never missed the boards, that is until his last outing when he stepped up in Class to run in New Zealand in the G3, Super Hero Role Playing Stakes when he crossed the wire in fifth place and was 11 lengths back.  His owner is giving him a jockey change for this race and has contracted with jockey, M Bia from the Czech Republic to come in to ride up top. They will be seeking to rebound from that last outing and get back on the boards as they take yet another step up in Class.  They will be headed out at post time to represent the Universal Racing Club residency.

Post Position: 4

Horse/Odds: Horn Of Bone  14/1

Sire: Golden Horn

Owner: ksparrow2

Jockey: J Wilson

This Bay Colt has nine lifetime starts and has found his way to the boards in six of those races.  His last outing came on 02/29/2020 here in South Africa in a Listed Stakes, Just Eric Turf Special.  He came in second that day against a small field.  His owner puts in the call to a familiar jockey, J Wilson from the Czech Republic to come in to ride up top of his horse again for this race.  Their last pairing together was disappointing, so jockey and horse will be looking for a better performance from the last time they worked together.  This horse ran a 94 speed rating in his last outing and he will need to bring that and perhaps some extra for this race.  They will be headed out on the turf to represent the Universal Racing Club residency.

Post Position: 5

Horse/Odds: The Little Stock  23/1

Sire: Tavisstock

Owner: corzak

Jockey: E Bernstein

This Bay Colt comes into this race winless and the odds makers take note in their morning line as they make him the co-long shot in this field at 23/1 odds.  He did have a nice outing in his last trip to the track when he went 8.5 furlongs in New Zealand in a Listed Stakes, the Galt House Turf Juvenile when he got up for second.  He was leading the field in this race and got caught late down the stretch as they headed for the wire.  He ran a 90 speed rating that day, but will need more for this race on Saturday as he takes a jump in Class.  Jockey, E Bernstein from Germany has been up top with this horse in the past and has been contracted to take to the irons again here in South Africa.  This familiar pairing will be headed out at post time to represent the Queensland Racecourse residency.

Post Position: 6

Horse/Odds: Card Equine  15/1

Sire: Equiano

Owner: ddbargainbin

Jockey: B Doherty

This Bay Colt has mainly been running in Local Maiden and Allowance races.  He has six career starts and has never missed the boards and has picked up two wins along the way.  This will be his first start at the Graded Level as he takes a big jump in Class to compete against this field.  His last trip to the turf came on 02/17/2020 in Newmarket when he ran in a Local $29,200 NW3L Allowance.  He showed up at the wire in third and was 2 lengths off at the wire with a 93 speed rating that day.  Jockey, B Doherty from India gets the call to take this trip with this colt when they head out to their gate representing the All-Stars Racing residency.

Post Position: 7

Horse/Odds: Just A Monty  5/1

Sire: Just A Way

Owner: newastin15

Jockey: V Hartsfield

This Bay Colt catches the eye of the odds makers as they give him the nod as the co-favorite in this field.  This colt has eight career starts and has only missed the boards one time and that was in his Maiden debut, thus bringing no concerns.  His last trip to the turf came on 02/15/2020 when he traveled 9 furlongs in the G1, Vermont Is 4 Lovers Stakes in Vermont.  He came in third that day when he crossed the wire 3 ¼ lengths back with a 101 speed rating.  He makes the long trip back here to South Africa, but he has shown he can handle long trips in the past.  The colts owner makes a call to India to contract the services of jockey, V Hartsfield to take the irons for this race.  This first time pairing will head out to their gate representing the All-Star Racing residency.

Post Position: 8

Horse/Odds: Jofra  23/1

Sire: Scratch Bred (DAIWA MAJOR x DANEHILL x RAHY)

Owner: silverallstar

Jockey: L Rigdon

The odds makers make their concerns heard making this Chestnut Colt the other longest choice in this field.  The concerns I am sure being that this horse just broke his Maiden on his last trip to the turf in New Mexico going 9 furlongs to catch the win with an 88 speed rating.  There are added concerns in that this horse has never run in an Allowance race and he is making a long trip to get here from New Mexico.  That said, he is showing improvement with each outing and this young colt is well bred.  I just kind of think this race will be too big for him against the more experienced horses in this field.  He gets jockey, L Rigdon from Japan to take to the saddle for this trip.  They will be heading out on Saturday representing the GR Simsters residency.

Post Position: 9

Horse/Odds: Ghostzooper  6/1

Sire: Ghostzapper

Owner: tegan

Jockey: D Howard

This Bay Colt has had five career starts and has only missed the boards one time which came in his Maiden debut.  His last trip to the track was on 01/28/2020 when he ran 9 furlongs in Ireland in a $43,800 NW3L Allowance.  He ran just off the leader in that race and starting making moves around the third call.  He hit the wire first getting up by ¾ lengths with a 103 speed rating that day.  He makes his first attempt to run at the Graded level as he takes a jump in Class with jockey, D Howard in the saddle.  D Howard is a local jockey here in South Africa which should draw some bets at the window from his fans.  This pairing will go to the turf on Saturday representing the All-Star Racing residency.

Post Position: 10

Horse/Odds: Kings Lakes  12/1

Sire: Kingsbarns

Owner: anewstar

Jockey: G Arnold

This Bay Colt’s owner made a surface switch with him back in August of last year.  Since the move over to turf this colt has seen his struggles, but did hit the boards back in September of last year in the G3, The Summertime Stakes in Ontario when he came in second and was just ½ length off at the wire.  His last trip to the track came on 02/08/2020 in Nebraska when he went 6 furlongs in a Listed Stakes, the Lite Prospect Turf Memorial.  He closed to show up third at the wire and was 2 ¼ lengths off with an 88 speed rating.  It does appear that this colt likes going further, but he has yet to go the distance of 9 furlongs.  He is making a long trip back from Nebraska and his owner has contracted with jockey, G Arnold from Japan who is a familiar jockey for this horse.  This pair will take to the turf and represent the Empire State Racing residency come Saturday.

Post Position: 11

Horse/Odds: Invincible Armies  5/1

Sire: I Am Invincible

Owner: foxon9

Jockey: A Craig

This Bay Colt catches the eye of the odds makers and gives him the call as the other co-favorite in this race.  His last trip to the track came on 02/15/2020 in Turkey when he went 8.5 furlongs in a Listed Stakes, the Ball Ban Turf Route.  He stayed close throughout this race and made a move around the third call.  He grabbed the lead and showed the field the way to the wire to get up by 2 ¼ lengths besting his closest competitor.  The owner makes a call to Newmarket and jockey, A Craig jumped at the chance to take the mount.  They will be headed to their gate representing the Pastures of Green residency.

Post Position: 12

Horse/Odds: Cryptophine  20/1

Sire: Dariyan

Owner: deepesr14

Jockey: L Slater

This Bay Colt gets little attention in the morning line as he is made one of the longer choices in this field.  This colt has had his struggles and only has one win to his credit and that was back in August of last year when he broke his Maiden in British Columbia.  His last outing came on 01/26/2020 in Indiana when he traveled 9.5 furlongs in the Lass Appeal Dirt Route.  He was met with much disappointed when he crossed the wire in seventh place and was over 11 lengths back. That was a dirt outing and his speed rating was 88 which was a career high for him.  Jockey, L Slater from South Korea gets the call to ride up top.  They have paired together in the past and this jockey has his work cut out for him to find more fire in the legs of this colt.  They will be headed out at post time to represent the Empire State Racing residency.

Post Position: 13

Horse/Odds: Duke Rivalrys  10/1

Sire: Shirocco

Owner: deeprock11

Jockey: V Wright

The lightng99 Master Stables find this Bay Colt to bring to South Africa as well.  This colts last trip to the tack was one of his better performances.  He ran here in South Africa on 02/08/2020 and went 8.5 furlongs in a Listed Stakes, the War City Turf Route where he came in second just missing the wire first by a head bob.  He improved to his best speed rating of 97 that day and looks to add to that number come Saturday.  To help in his efforts a call was made by this colts owner to jockey, V Wright from Norway to take the ride.  They have their work cut out for themselves here including this outside gate draw.  They will head out in the post parade representing the Empire State Racing residency.

Good luck to all owners and horses!

Skippy’s Watch List

Just A Monty:  After his performance in Vermont this horse deserves a look here.

Ghostzooper:   He makes his Graded debut, but if he can bring his speed forward he could be dangerous.

Invincible Armies:  Picks up a nice Listed Stakes win in his last outing.  Can he repeat?

Kitty B:  He can go the distance and has always shown he can compete in his races.

Tarton’s Long Shot

The Little Stock:  Continues to improve, but can he go another half furlong?  At this price today I think he deserves a place on some of my exotic bets at the window.
