Breyers stalked the early leaders down the backstretch before making his winning move a furlong from the wire to get up just in time to win the Grade 3 Lipstick Guineas in New Zealand this weekend.

For the three year old son of Medaglia D’Oro, it was his second consecutive graded stakes win when he crossed the wire first in the $75,000 one mile event for three year olds on the New Zealand turf course Saturday, and it upped his earnings to $219,310 for his career.

With the speedy Talk Money and post-time favorite Etonnement showing the way through some very fast early fractions in Saturday’s race, Breyers was content sit back in third place behind those two for the early part of Saturday‘s race.

When Talk Money began to fade midway through the eight-furlong race, Etonnement grabbed the lead on the far turn, before Breyers used a strong, sweeping move on the turn for home, to capture the 2011 Lipstick Guineas.

Tara’s Cape, who came from way back early, was also charging hard late, but he just missed at the wire, finishing ½ length behind Breyers, who is owned by Super Stables.

Etonnement, who showed some nice early foot and a very game effort, hung on to be a strong third behind Breyers and Tara’s Cape, only ¾ of a length behind the winner.

“I was very happy with Tara’s Cape this week,” said John of Tulloch Stables, who owns the three year old Irish-bred son of Cape Cross. John’s horse was running in his second graded stakes race ever on Saturday in New Zealand, and he showed a stunning improvement on Saturday. “His first graded run was a shocker, so it’s good to know he can compete at this level. He was just beaten by a better horse on this day.”

Breyers, who ran a 111 speed figure while winning the Grade 3 Judges’ View last time out, on November 19 in New Jersey, ran a 109 speed figure on Saturday in the Lipstick Guineas. He finished the mile in 1:34 2/5 this weekend.

The 4-3 exacta with Breyers and Tara Cape paid $48.20, while the 4-3-5 trifecta with Etonnement third paid $81.00

Breyers paid $8.20, $4.10, and $2.10 across the board Saturday. Breyers, who has now finished in the top three in 12 of his 15 starts, scored the fifth win of his career on Saturday.
