w:st=\"on\">Texas<\/st1:State><\/st1:place> to contest another ten furlongs (dirtwise, that is) in this long-running contest.<SPAN style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">\u00a0 <\/SPAN>The gate was full to the brim of the aged and infirm, and a few that are still spry for their age.<SPAN style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Horses had to be at least seven years old to enter, and one entrant wasn\u2019t an old man at all: 7yo Saint Liam mare <B style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal\">SAND PEBBLES(KY)<\/B>.<SPAN style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Unfortunately, this normally speedy lass contested the pace and apparently didn\u2019t care for the added distance, winding up eleventh.<SPAN style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">\u00a0 <\/SPAN><\/P><P style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=MsoNormal><o:p>\u00a0<\/o:p><\/P><P style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=MsoNormal>It was <B style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal\">NATION OF ULYSSES(LA)<\/B> who ran off with this edition.<SPAN style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">\u00a0 <\/SPAN><B style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal\">AMERICAN OUTLAW(JPN) <\/B>got first jump on pacesetter <B style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal\">OTTO CAUSES(IRE)<\/B> after that one had built a five-length lead, but <B style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal\">NATION OF ULYSSES(LA)<\/B> was already on the move.<SPAN style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">\u00a0 <\/SPAN>He had been well reserved early and took command to win by more than three.<SPAN style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">\u00a0 <\/SPAN>The 7yo, a product of the productive but retired <st1:State w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Louisiana<\/st1:place><\/st1:State> stallion War Eagle, had missed the board in Races 3 and 4 of this year\u2019s series, but after a scorching triple-digit summer he seemed to better understand his own prowess.<SPAN style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Congratulations to Astins Place Stables on the win \u2013 and kudos to anyone who names their horses after Dischord Records bands (although I was never really a fan of this one\u2026).<\/P><P style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=MsoNormal><o:p>\u00a0<\/o:p><\/P><P style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=MsoNormal>This was the first time I had entered a horse in the Old Man series: <B style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal\">AUTUMN REMINDER(GB),<\/B> at 12yo the oldest horse in the race, and the one with the fewest starts!<SPAN style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">\u00a0 <\/SPAN>I picked him up as a claim earlier this year as a Dubai Millenium horse who might be worth using as a he-mare.<SPAN style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">\u00a0 <\/SPAN>He has never really liked routes, so I guess that did him in, but I have no regrets as he doesn\u2019t have many more months to race since I have to breed him before he turns 13.<\/P><P style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=MsoNormal><o:p>\u00a0<\/o:p><\/P><P style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=MsoNormal><o:p>\u00a0<\/o:p><\/P><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Old Man Race 10 Has Definitive
