In fact, one of the few speedsters in here is Cossack, the other entry from Kevoman Stables who, at 11/1, looks like he’ll be running all alone on the front end for much of this year’s Grade 1 Gold Glass.

Then there’s Shine On Through, the winner of the $2,500,000 Grade 1 Spring Cup in Japan last time out. Both have run in the Grade 2 Fitness Cup and the same three Grade 1’s (the Ackland, the South Australian and the Spring Cup). Sadler’s Rock won the Fitness, where Shine On Through finished fourth. But Shine On Through exacted his revenge in Japan last time out when he beat Sadler’s Rock in the Spring Cup. The six year old son of Bel Esprit matched the highest speed figure of his career (108) in winning the Spring Cup. But if you want to know the most incredible thing that pops out at you when you look over this guy’s past performance charts, have a look. He was claimed by Tulloch Stables for $2,000 way back in the third start of his career, and he’s earned nearly $3.9 million for his owner. Kerpow! If you think great horses can’t come out of $2,000 claimers, this guy is living proof that the bargains are there, if you just watch out for them. His dam, Surface Power, only won 3 times in 33 starts, but she has more than made up for that with Shine On Through. Tulloch Stables has done a remarkable job with this horse. And if he matches his winning style last time out when he won the $2,500,000 Grade 1 Spring Cup, you can bet he’s going to be dangerous in this spot in Berkshire this weekend. Like Sadler’s Rock, he’s coming off a fairly long rest, too. Watch Shine On Through closely here this weekend.

2 — CARENTAN (ENG) Owner: Fox Force 5 Racing

Odds: 14/1 (New Approach (IRE) x Kingmambo x Seattle Slew)

Carentan is the only filly in this year’s Grade 1 Gold Glass, and she’s up against it in this bunch of boys. Racing the boys is nothing new to Carentan. She’s done this twice before and finished third in the 12-furlong Tete The Undead Stakes in Eastern Kentucky, which wasn’t bad at all against that field. She came from way back, like most of these here like to do, and put on a pretty strong late run against that bunch. She made up about ten lengths on the leader from the third call to the finish in that race last season, and it was her highest speed figure of her career up to that point (98). Carentane is not new to stakes company, having run in four listed stakes and the $600,000 Grade 1 Vicky Oaks, where she picked up a check finishing fourth. This filly has seen some pretty strong fields in her career, whether it was against boys or girls, so the Gold Glass Field she’ll be seeing here this weekend in Berkshire isn’t anything new for her. The 16 furlongs in the Gold Glass shouldn’t bother her at all. She’s run this distance once before and that was in her last start in the Over Highland Turf Mare Endurance in Norway. She fell back early in that 7-filly field, running her usual race. Carentan was about nine lengths back of the leaders and she put on her patented late rush, and she won drawing off easily in that field, winning by open lengths. It was a pretty impressive performance for this scratch-bred daughter of New Approach. She’s only thrown three speed figures above the century mark in her 15 starts, but she’s coming off a big win last time out, and she’s another who will need some early speed to develop on the front end so she can make her late rush to the finish. Don’t discount Carentan’s chances here. She could do something no other filly has ever done here in the Gold Glass, and that’s “Win One For The Girls.”

3 — SADLER ROCK (IRE) Owner: Daniel Racing Empire

Odds: 6/1 (Rock Of Gibraltar (IRE) x Better Than Kris (Sadler’s Wells x Rainbow Quest))

Two-time graded stakes winner Sadler Rock will be searching for his first Grade 1 win here this weekend when he steps on the turf course here in Berkshire. The son of Rock Of Gibraltar out of the graded stakes winning Sadler’s Wells mare Better Than Kris has wins in the Grade 3 Timberland Lodge in Surrey and the Grade 2 Fitness Cup in New Zealand back in January of this season. That win in the Fitness Cup was the first time Sadler’s Rock tried the 16 furlongs he’ll see at Berkshire this weekend. He’s been in three 16-furlong graded events since then, including a second place finish in the Grade 1 Ackland and a third-place finish in the Grade 1 South Australian Cup in Victoria two starts ago. Sadler’s Rock is only four years old. In his seven stakes starts, he’s 2-2-1 with a couple off the board finishes. But he really showed us something in those two Grade 1 events down under in New Zealand and Australia when he threw the highest speed figures of his career (107). Sadler’s Rock is coming off a nearly seven-week layoff since his last start on April 30 in the Grade 1 Spring Cup, where he finished sixth. Daniel Racing Empire knows when to give his horses a breather, and they’re usually very dangerous coming off a rest. The fact that this barn is sending Sadler’s Rock off a seven-week layoff in a Grade 1 event probably means that this horse is sharp and one you probably need to keep a close eye on this weekend. These connections usually don’t do this, coming off a layoff straight to a grade 1, so we might want to keep an eye on Sadler’s Rock in this spot. Always watch the odds on horses from this barn in these types of spots, a big grade 1 event coming off a layoff. They’re usually dangerous.

4 — FUTURE DREAM (KY) Owner: Kevoman Stables

Odds: 3/1 (A.P. Indy x True Dream (Sadler’s Wells x Nijinsky II))

Future Dreams will be looking to do a couple of things here in Berkshire this weekend. First, he’s got nearly $3 million in the bank in just 22 starts in his career, and with a top three finish here, this five year old son of A. P. Indy will most certainly break the $3 million mark in career earnings. And, second, he’s looking to get back on the winning track. He’s also trying ot become only the third favorite to ever win the Gold Glass. The four-time graded stakes winner didn’t start racing until October of his three year old season. He hasn’t won since February of this year, when he won the 16-furlong Grade 3 Diamond Stakes in Japan. Future Dream, who is ranked sixth in the long turf division, won the Diamond Stakes in easy fashion, leading at all four calls and beating a couple of legends in Red Fog ($4.9 million in earnings) and Carnival Of Love (nearly $9 million in earnings and two-time Ark winner). Future Dream saw his speed figures dip a little in his last two starts since that win. He’s coming off a May 28 fifth place finish in the Grade 1 Pilsner in Surrey. Future Dream has got tons of early speed, and if they let this guy loose on the lead, there may be no catching him in Berkshire this weekend. He’s one of two entries from Kevoman Stables here, and both of them have plenty of early speed to dictate the pace.

5 — MYTH OR MAGIC (KY) Owner: Mucha Stables

Odds: 6/1 (Dynaformer x Magical Mia (Giant’s Causeway x Sadler’s Wells))

Myth Or Magic is an extremely interesting horse in this spot. First of all, he comes out of a Breeder’s Bowl Turf Distaff winner called Magical Mia (IRE), who won over $3 million in her career, and won 22 of her 42 career starts. And he’s a four year old son of Dynaformer, so you know this horse will have no trouble at all getting this 16 furlongs he’ll see here in the Gold Glass this weekend in Berkshire. A few things pop out at you immediately when you look at this guy’s past performance charts. He’s one of a few who was run as a two year old. Most of the rest of these didn’t start racing until they were well into their three year old seasons. And he’s only got four stakes starts in his career. He’s also run this 16 furlongs only once in his career and that was his last time out when he won the only graded stakes try of his career, the Grade 3 BBR Special in Germany on May 7. He won that race quite handily by open lengths, and that race should be a good warm up for the Gold Glass this weekend. Like so many of these here, Myth Or Magic doesn’t have a whole lot of early speed, so you can look for him to be laying back early in this spot. Despite the fact that this guy has only one graded stakes win, he’s 6/1 on the morning line, which means the odds makers are seeing something here that makes this one special. That confidence-building win in the Grade 3 win last time out bodes well for him in this spot. It means he can handle the distance, and he can win easily in graded stakes company. He didn’t run against any million dollar earners last time out, but it was the way he won that was so impressive. This son of Dynaformer could be very dangerous in this spot as he tries to snag that first Grade 1 win.

6 — CAN I GET TWELVE (KY) Owner: Smokeglack Stables

Odds: 6/1 (Dynaformer x Sky Classic x Maria’s Mon)

Say hi to Can I Get Twelve, a scratch-bred son of Dynaformer who has run speed figures off the charts in a couple of his races. The four year old graded stakes winner is probably one of the more lightly raced horses you’ll see here in the Grade 1 Gold Glass. He started his racing career in July of his three year old season, and it only took him five starts before he was popping a triple digit speed figure. And it was a monster! He threw a 112 speed ball in the 12-furlong URC Turf Classic, where he finished third at odds of 73-1. He broke his maiden at first asking in July of last season in a 16-furlong marathon. Appropriately, the race was named The Two Crazy Tazmanians 2-mile Maiden Extravaganza. Smokeglack wanted to see just exactly what his scratch-bred monster was made of early on. He comes in here having won three of his last five, but one of those losses came in a common race with a couple of these, the Grade 1 Ackland Cup, where he finished some 39-odd lengths behind the winner. Don’t let that discourage you from betting on him though. Immediately after that New Zealand race, Can I Get Twelve was shipped off to Europe, where he promptly threw a 109 speed figure in winning the 13-furlong Streets Of Fire Turf Stakes in Italy, winning by open lengths. Then, four weeks later in Paris in the Grade 3 Honey Do, the son of Dynaformer really wowed the French crowd in attendance when he popped the highest speed figure (116) of his career winning there. This horse has a couple of crazy high speed figures, and if he decides he really wants to run in Berkshire this weekend, they’d better get out of his way. Can I Get Twelve can be a beast when he wants to, and if he runs anything like he did when he popped that 116 speed figure in that event in Paris, this one might be taking home his first grade 1 win. We’re that serious about this horse. If he’s on his game and scary good, like we think he can be, you might want to drop a few quid on this one.

7 — MAJOR IRISH (JAP) Owner: Pirate Stables

Odds: 17/1 (Daiwa Major (JAP) x Starling Road (Kris S x Irish River (FR))

Major Irish was running in strictly allowance company up until his last start and doing really well there. He had eight in the money finishes in 12 starts. Then his owner threw him into the deep end of the pool last time out in the $2,500,000 Grade 1 Spring Cup in Japan. Usually, when you go straight from allowance company into a big event like the Grade 1 Spring Cup, odds are you’re going to go off at a really big price, and you’re probably going to get hammered by the multi-million dollar earners. In the Spring Cup’s field of 12, eight horses had earned a million dollars or more, and five of those were in the $2.7-$4.9 million dollar range, including the winner, Shine On Through, who Major Irish will be seeing this weekend again. But Major Irish far exceeded his owner’s expectations when he put on a major league performance in finishing third in the Grade 1 Spring Cup. He threw the highest speed figure of his career in that race (105), and it was only the third time he had exceeded the century mark in speed figures. Major Irish showed he was for real in that big Japanese race. He definitely showed he belongs with this bunch there. Can he repeat that performance here in Berkshire this weekend? He’ll come from far back, like he did in Japan, and he’s like a few others here who would like to see a lot of early speed up front in the Grade 1 Gold Glass this weekend. And, he doesn’t have nearly as many of those million dollar babies to contend with in this spot either. You wont get anything near the 39-1 odds on him here, after that tremendous run he made in the Spring Cup. He snuck up on the field in Japan last time out at 39-1, and he could very well do the same thing this weekend in Berkshire.

8 — JUKEBOX KID (IRE) Owner: TABOO Stables

Odds: 9/1 (Raven’s Pass x Street Cry (IRE) x Dynaformer

Jukebox Kid comes to Berkshire this weekend having won five of his last six starts. And three of those wins have come at the 16-furlong distance he’ll see here in the Grade 1 Gold Glass this weekend. The four year old scratch-bred son of Raven’s Pass is pretty new to the stakes scene, having won the only stakes race he’s run in, when he won the Grade 2 Second Henry Stakes right here in Berkshire on May 21 in his last start. In his last five wins, Jukebox Kid was winning big, having won all five by a little over a combined 22 lengths. He’s ready to make the step up here, as he showed in the Grade 2 Second Henry last time out. This guy loves to come from far back out of the clouds and close with a strong, late kick. If he can get any kind of speed duel to develop on the front end here in Berkshire this weekend, Jukebox Kid can be very dangerous in this spot. Despite the fact that the highest speed figures of his career are around the 104 mark, this four year old one-time graded stakes winner could be very dangerous here this weekend if he gets any kind of fast pace to run at late. Keep your eye on Jukebox Kid.

9 — Out Of Spite (KY) Owner: Lenny271

Odds: 9/2 (Dynaformer x Nijinsky II x Sharpen Up (GB))

The last time we wrote about Out Of Spite, he had a spectacular come-from-behind win in the Grade 2 San Juan in California on April 16. Out Of Spite was 14 ½ lengths off the lead in the San Juan halfway through that 14 furlong race, but he turned on the jets and won by open lengths on a yielding turf course. It was the first time in six starts he dipped below the century mark in speed figures, but you can probably blame that on the really soggy turf course in California that day. In his last start, this scratch-bred son of Dynaformer got back into the triple digit speed figures (103) when he finished second in the Grade 2 Yorkshire Plate in Surrey. He came from way back in that race, too, but he couldn’t quite catch 8-1 shot El Samurai. Out Of Spite has finished in the money in 19 of his 29 career starts, and the Grade 1 Winter Cup winner on Christmas Day last year has thrown triple digit speed figures 12 times in his career. This is only the third time in his career that he’s run the 16 furlongs he’ll see here in Berkshire this weekend, but this horse has tons of stamina, and the capability to lay far off the pace and strike late in the stretch. Look out for Out Of Spite. He was sensational two starts ago in the San Juan on that soggy California turf course, and he might just be ready to pop another big one here. He’s breaking from the 9 hole in this spot, and that shouldn’t bother him at all. He’ll probably lay back early, have a look at what’s happening on the inside in front of him and stay well back before kicking it into gear late. At 9/2, he’s definitely a live in this spot, so keep an eye on this guy.

10 — COSSACK (KY) Owner: Kevoman Stables

Odds: 11/1 (Mineshaft x Unfuwain x Darshaan (ENG))

The second entry for Kevoman Stables here is Cossack, who has more starts than just about anyone in this field. The 6 year old son of Mineshaft has 41 career starts. He’s got a little under $500,000 in earnings coming in here, and he hasn’t seen stakes company since September of last season. But he’s been extremely consistent in racing in allowance company since then. He’s run 9 times in allowance company since that stakes start, and he’s won 4 of them and finished second three times. This guy is one of the few who has any legitimate early speed here, along with stable mate and favorite Future Dreams, the other entry from Kevoman Stables. His jockey will probably try to take him to the front immediately in this spot and provide some legitimate early pace for this bunch to run at in Berkshire this weekend. He’s only seen this 16 furlongs five times in his 41 starts, but he’s won three of them, finished second once, and his only off the board finish at the distance was also his only race in graded stakes company. He finished fouth in the Grade 2 New Zealand Drinking Device Stakes way back in 2009 in his only graded start. With very little speed in this race, Cossack should be alone on the lead with Future Dream, despite the fact that he raced only a couple weeks ago. The rest of the field will probably watch Cossack dance out in front early, which is what he usually does. They better not let this one get too far out in front, or this rabbit could pull an upset out of the hat here in the Grade 1 Gold Glass this weekend.

[2

post-9361","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-previews
["GET
