This is a classy bunch of colts and horses and it’s not surprising to see the betting wide open. Let’s see if we can narrow the contenders down a bit.

The 5/1 favourite is Navy Man, the top ranked dirt sprinter. He has earned just shy of $1 million and has won three of his four attempts at grade one level. Speed figures in excess of 110 are commonplace for this son of Septime Ciel, and he has Kentucky’s top jock aboard. There are a few things that may be of concern to the crazytown1 barn, however. Most importantly must be Navy Man’s dismal performance last time out after nearly five months off the track in stakes company. It’s very likely that he needed the run and will come on from that, but it’s been two years since he last recorded a figure as low as that 92. Can he bounce back to his best only two weeks later? The other factor is that Navy Man is at his absolute best over seven furlongs and this may be a touch sharp in this company.

There are three horses grouped at 7/1. Big Man’s Bridge is in top form and may be the one to beat. He won the Gr1 Tri-City Sprint last time out over 6.5 furlongs and is at his best over this sort of trip. Trainer northdance has kept him in top shape as this son of Storm Cat has finished in the top three in all of his last nine starts. Expect another huge effort here.

Atakachaw must be one of the best horses to have never won a GR1, despite 10 attempts. He has recorded speed figures above 120 three times, but the last of those was a year ago. His recent form has been a little inconsistent, but a repeat of his Sooner-Husker Stakes GR2 win three starts back would give him a big chance of scoring for the cadiz yard. In his favour is that he is ideally distance suited.

Empire Of The Sun produced a career best in his penultimate start when winning the GR2 Booker T. Handicap over 7.5 furlongs. A repeat could see joanneb leading him into the winners enclosure but I have my doubts over his ability to wire the field, as he likes to do, over this shorter trip. Unlike many others here though, he is an improving four year old.

Skanonymous, an 8/1 chance from the sighclone barn, may find GR1 company just that little bit too tough at this stage and would probably appreciate a little give in the ground. He has multiple stakes wins over this trip to his credit and must be in with a good money chance.

It’s hard to make a case for the 9/1 chance, Silent Key. He quite capable over 6 furlongs but recently seems to prefer a touch further. His three previous efforts in graded company have found him running on from well back but without ever looking dangerous. The wolflodge barn will be hoping that he can get into top gear early enough to run into the money.

Vomarramov is a dual GR1 winner and is currently the number three ranked dirt sprinter. His form does seem to be on the wane though and a win looks unlikely for trainer rintintin. He finished only 2 lengths off Atakachaw in the Sooner Husker though, so he must be in with a chance. He goes off at 10/1.

Also at 10/1 is the Irish bred, gnokenny trained, High Gain. He ran a great race in the Tri-City but followed that up with a poor stakes effort, and this run may be coming too soon after that. If he’s got enough left in him, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him right in the firing line at the finish.

The 12/1 chance, Fort Knox Too, has impressive recent allowance form but is has been quite some time since he recorded the 110+ that he would need to win here. He hasn’t been disgraced when representing the silverazor yard in graded races recently, but this looks a bit tough. Also at 12/1 is cue‘s colt, Dan On The Run. He ran a shocking race last time out, following a narrow loss in stakes company. Those has been his only two starts in almost 5 months, and he needs a return to earlier form to be a factor. That earlier form is impressive though and he cannot be discounted but I would prefer his chances over slightly further. The final 12/1 chance is Primetime Emblem, representing ss89. He has failed in his last two starts when trying routes but today drops back to his favourite trip and he could just be the surprise package in the field. He is well held on the Sooner Busker form but he looks better than that effort.

Following a narrow defeat in the GR1 ‘Rocky’, topicount‘s Phantom Wings steps up to face older horses for the first time. He’s got a few points to improve to feature but it would be no surprise at all to see him do just that at this time of the year. 19/1 could prove generous for this son of Fusaichi Pegasus. Much the same applies to the 22/1 chance Wonderboy DJ from the wonder2 yard. This 3 year old colt has been improving with each start of late and was a good grade 2 winner last time out. This is a big step up but he could be up to the task and loves this trip. Smokentate is the outsider of the party at 26/1 and his impressive 8 wins from 16 starts amazingly enough doesn’t look good enough in this company. If he can grab some minor money for koolaid, he will have done well.

I’m going to go for Big Man’s Bridge as the one to beat with Atakachaw as possibly the biggest danger. If you’re looking for a longshot, consider the three year olds, Phantom Wings and Wonderboy DJ.

[2

post-903","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-previews
["GET
