The race will go off as the thirteenth race on the card for this Saturday, and will be open to three-year-old fillies. The group of young hopefuls will be traveling a course of a mile and one sixteenth over the main dirt track. A total purse has been put together of $300,000 for the race. There will be some showers the days leading up to the California Oaks (G10 this weekend, but the track will dry up well before post time on Saturday and not show up again until after its running. The race has drawn in a total of eleven fillies. The race has hosted a wide variety of top-class fillies throughout its long history, lets take a look at this years’ runners.
1. Of Mice And Men – (Smart Strike x Deputy Minister x Seeking The Gold) – claim of Astin’s Other Place – M. Staples – 7/1
Out of the Grade I winning broodmare Whitener, the chestnut filly has made eight lifetime starts, winning five times in her career and finishing off the board only once in her racing career. The filly made her most recent start here in California during the Los Vinaigrette Stakes (G1) at eight furlongs. The chestnut filly broke out of the gate near the back of the field at ninth out of the gate. She was held in this position for the majority of the race until she was let loose in the stretch. She made up a lot of ground in the final furlongs, but only managed to rally to finish third, setting a lifetime best speed figure of ninety-five. Prior to this she had won three consecutive races including the Santa Jezebel Stakes (G3) at the same mile and one sixteenth she will be facing again this weekend. The filly will likely set just off the pace around the fourth position at the start, stalking until the wire. Though she is versatile and if things don’t go her way on Saturday, she could be held further back.
2. Liebschaft (GER) – (Monsun (GER) x Deputy Minister x Buckpasser) – chloedog of Right At Home Stables – O. Brim – 6/1
The German-bred filly has made seven starts in her career, all of them from here in the United States. She’s won three of these career starts and finished on the board in two other races. Her most recent race came in the Los Vinaigrette Stakes (G1) here in California. The brown filly went straight to the lead in the race, but lost it in the final turn. She would end up crossing the wire seven and a quarter lengths back in sixth. She set a speed figure of eighty-nine. Prior to that start the filly won, by two and a half lengths, her start in the mile and one sixteenth Movieland Starlet (G1), also held here in California. The homebred filly will likely be forwardly placed this weekend, though she doesn’t have to have the lead.
3. Lana Turner – (Street Cry (IRE) x Giant’s Causeway (IRE) x Fappiano) – super11 of Simply……SUPER! – F. Gossett – 5/1
Out of the stakes-winning broodmare Giantiano (IRE), the chestnut filly has a somewhat surprising aptitude to the dirt, despite her pedigree which could easily lean towards the turf. The Kentucky-bred has made a total of eight career starts, winning half of them and finishing off the board only once so far in her career. The most recent start for the filly was in the Vermont Is 4 Lovers (G1) series, where she ran at nine furlongs over the dirt. She broke just off the pace of the leader and took control of the pace in the final turn. However, she would be caught by a few late closers at the wire to finish third by a head in what was a very close finish. She set a speed figure of ninety-seven. Before this she’d won the Expenditure Stakes, a listed stakes race over nine furlongs in Florida, in wire to wire fashion. This weekend she will likely be taken to the lead out of the gate and be our pacesetter.
4. Destined To Blaze – (A.P. Indy x Seeking The Gold x Deputy Minister) – isicrew of MTK and GALLOPLAZ SIM Joint Venture – L. Jones – 7/1
This blue-blooded filly has made a total of seven career starts and brought home a total of $247,090 in lifetime earnings. The brown Kentucky-bred made her most recent start in the Los Vinaigrette Stakes (G1) over a mile here in California last month. She broke out of the gate in a mid-pack position, but quickly began to challenge the rest of the fillies. She gained ground quickly and by the time she reached the final turn she had drawn even with the front runners of the pack. She went on to win the race by one and a half lengths with a lifetime best speed figure of ninety-nine. She has gone over the mile and one sixteenth distance that she will be facing this Saturday one other time before, in the Santa Jezebel Stakes (G3) where she finished fifth. The filly will likely either run in a mid-pack position, or she could be further up on the pace, setting just off the front runners in third or fourth, depending upon the pace this weekend.
5. Powerful Mover – (Eddington x Mr. Leader x Storm Cat) – graywolf32 of Wolf’s Den – F. Griffen – 8/1
Making just her third graded stakes start this weekend in the California Oaks (G1), the brown filly has made a total of seven career starts. The most recent start for the Kentucky-bred filly came in the Rachel Alexandra Stakes (G3) over seven and a half furlongs in her home state of Kentucky. The filly broke on the lead right out of the gate at the start of the race, but was overpowered as the they neared the stretch. She would still hold on to manage second, off the pace of the winner by two and a quarter lengths. She set a speed figure of ninety-five, a lifetime best for the filly. She hasn’t had a win since November of last year when she won an eight furlong allowance race in Florida win wire to wire fashion by two lengths. The filly has never been less than first out of the gate, though has faded in many of her starts and she has never gone the mile and one sixteenth distance that she will be asked to go this weekend, so she has a few questions to answer. She will undeniably make a run for the lead and try to be the pacesetter out of the gate.
6. Terminal Velocity – (Awesome Again x Seattle Slew x Buckpasser) – younggroup of Tees Stables – A. Lewis – 5/1
Lightly raced with just five career starts to her name, the blue-blooded brown filly is undefeated so far in her racing career. The most recent start for the impressive three-year-old daughter of Awesome Again was the mile and one sixteenth SilverBulletBeer (G3) last month. The filly broke out of the starting gate and settled in to eighth position. She didn’t begin to make her move until urged in the final turn. The filly made an impressive stretch drive and went on to win in her graded stakes debut by three-quarters of a length, setting a speed figure of ninety-seven. Prior to this the filly had also won the Golden Wildcat Stakes and the URC BB Juvy Dirt Fillies Restricted, both of which were listed stakes races. The filly is a fairly versatile runner, and will most likely be running mid-pack or as a closer on Saturday.
7. Raven’s Remorse (IRE) – (Raven’s Pass x Irish River (FR) x Blushing Groom (FR)) – bigrama of R&R Stables – E. Land – 18/1
The longshot of the race this weekend, the Irish-bred brown filly was a late entry into the field this weekend. She’s got a lot of experience under her belt with a total of nine lifetime starts in her career, including four wins. The most recent start for the homebred filly was in a nine furlong allowance race in Idaho over a good dirt track. The filly went straight out to the front of the field at the break and never slowed down, going on to win in wire to wire fashion with a speed figure of eighty-two by an impressive three and three-quarter lengths. The filly has a single graded stakes start that she made as a two-year-old during the Margarine Stakes (G3) at a mile and one sixteenth. Breaking just off the pace in this race, she didn’t advance much throughout the course of the race and crossed the wire in fifth. The filly should be forwardly placed this weekend, likely just off the pace of a few front-runners.
8. Just Tapit In – (Tapit x Rahy x Mr. Prospector) – costanza of Tazdevil Stables – E. Dekeyser – 8/1
With nine starts in her career, the light gray filly is out of the graded placed broodmare Round Project. She’s won five of her nine starts and finished on the board two other times during her career. Her most recent start was in The Phone The House Special, a listed stakes race over a mile on the dirt in Eastern Kentucky. She’d broken out of the gate and was being held just off the pace of the front-runners in fourth place. The gray filly steadily gained ground on the rest of the field, ultimately going on to win the race by a head with a speed figure of ninety-five. Prior to this the filly had also won the Time Grinding Special, another listed stakes at eight furlongs. The filly has tried the mile and one sixteenth distance before, and finished second, but this weekend she will be facing a step up in class as she tries graded competition for the first time in her career. The is a versatile runner, but will most likely set out of the gate mid-pack.
9. Fear The Silent – (Ghostzapper x Kingmambo x Seattle Slew) – stupor1 of .. – L. The three-year-old Kentucky-bred has won four of her seven career starts. Her most recent start was in the mile and one sixteenth Exbourne’s Asia Special, a listed stakes race held in Nebraska. The filly broke out of the gate towards the front of the field, just off the pace of the front-runner. By the final turn of the race the filly had taken control of the lead and went on to win by two and a quarter lengths at the wire, setting a speed figure of one hundred one, which will be the highest reported speed figure of any of the fillies running in the California Oaks (G1) this weekend. Prior to this the filly had been very successful at the allowance level. This weekend will mark the fillies graded stakes debut, but if her last race is any indication, she is good and ready for the step up in class. She will likely be forwardly placed, though just off the pace of a few front runners, ideally placed around third or fourth out of the gate.
10. Hard Secret – (Hard Spun x Secretariat x Ribot) – sportoking of Crandy Stables – T. The Kentucky-bred filly broke out of the starting gate just off the pace in fourth position. However, as the field neared the final turn of the eight furlong race the filly began to fade. She would drop even further back in the stretch to go on to finish eleventh at the wire. She set a speed figure of eighty-five. The last victory for the daughter of Hard Spun was in the Cavalcade Cup Restricted, a listed stakes race over a mile and one sixteenth, which was held over a good dirt track last year. The filly went wire to wire in the muddy race, winning by two and three-quarter lengths. She’s also won on the fast track before, most recently in The Motherly Love (G2) at seven furlongs. The filly will most likely be forwardly placed and could possibly try to contend for the lead, or she may be set just off the pace in second or third out of the gate.
11. Fleetwood Funny – (Distorted Humor x Awesome Again x Gone West) – fleetwood of Elite Racing Stables – J. The Kentucky-bred three-year-old has made eight career starts and has crossed the wire victorious in two of them. Her most recent start was in the afore mentioned Los Vinaigrette Stakes (G1) at a mile on the dirt. She broke out of the starting gate in eighth and was held in that position for most of the race. When they reached the final turn the filly had moved up into fifth, and was starting to make an impressive stretch drive that would come up short with the filly finishing one and a half lengths back in second with a speed figure of ninety-seven. Last December was her last victory, which came in the Minsky Memorial, a listed stakes race over nine furlongs. The filly will likely be running mid-pack this weekend, likely starting to make her move in the final turn.
Flrancho’s Picks
Win: Terminal Velocity
Place: Lana Turner
Show: Fear The Silent

[2

post-8946","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-previews
["GET
