Conditions are fine and the track as come up perfect. A small field of seven 4yo colts will present to the starter but that by no means helps to pick the winner

How will they finish? Lets take a more detailed look at each runner then attempt to write the conclusion….

1/ Prance – (4yo colt by El Prado) – 6/1
This 4yo doesn’t look like he belongs at first glance of his CV with no ungraded stakes attempts and just the single shot in graded company when a fading 6th two starts back in the G3 Patty Ewing. His last four runs (except for the failed graded race) have resulted in 3 from 3 at allowance level – all when going wire to wire at short odds. Has won 33% of his races – so he knows how to win, however the questions is the G1 company. Trainer has picked an exceptional race to slot him into in an attempt to steal a G1 and they must be commended for that however Prance looks as if he better make the most of his attention in the mounting yard as he doesn’t look to have the speed to match it with a few of these. He will put in a great front running performance but may fad at the furlong and go out swinging. Prefer others….

2/ Woozapper – (4yo colt by Ghostzapper) – 9/2
Well bred 4yo in this race up to his eye balls. I agree with the trainer starting him on dirt and would have thought he would have preferred it, however in just eight runs on turf he has three wins (one at ungraded level) and run 2nd in his last two races. Knocked out a 112 SP in New Zealand two starts back in the G2 Homelick to run a fantastic closing 2nd place to a $1.5 million dollar winner and backed it up last time out with a slick 109 SP in the G3 Chief Cook. Will look to take a sit directly behind Prance and run off him at the final furlong. He is in exceptional form, has the SP’s to match and will be suited by the horse running from the 1 hole setting the pace. Great race placement by trainer and will go close to stealing a G1 here in a small field.

3/ Mine Is Dangerous – (4yo colt by Mineshaft) – 9/2
4yo colt with eleven runs on turf and only missing a cheque three times. Last time out he took advantage of a small field at very short odds in the G3 Piano Man and the trainer has picked another great race here today. Was slightly out of form before last race but looks to have consolidated a bit after his last. Would certainly be rating him a lot higher if the track had some give in it as his record is solid on rain affected tracks. Both attempts have failed at the track but this is a far smaller field and his mid-field running pattern may suit. His form may not be cracking but he does have experience in graded company and he should put in a solid effort – 9/2 about right.

4/ Christmas Cheer – (4yo colt by Johannesburg) – 6/1
4yo from Johannesburg having his 15th start here in California today. Has been horribly out of form in his last three starts leaving me wonder if he needs a spell? His last four runs prior to that in July and August saw him record his first ungraded win then back up and win another followed by a 3rd placing at G3 level and then go wire to wire to record another ungraded win. If he had that form coming into this, I would say top 2, however he must turn around his recent runs if he is to earn a cheque here. The small field is a bonus and the trainer has picked a great race to get his confidence back. For me, his chances are as simple as this: if he recaptures his form – look out. If he continues his recent form – he may struggle to pick any of them off. He performs well when racing forward in the field and may just get a spot towards the front this week. In 26 runs, he has only once started at odds more than 10/1, however at 6/1 here this week in G1 company he will not get any of my hard earned.

5/ K’s Insatiable – (4yo colt by Bernardini) – 5/2
4yo colt that I am calling the winner. By far the class of the field and will go top 2 baring a bounce. Record on turf reads 13/7-1-1 for over $2 million. Would he have better on dirt with a record at 4/3-1-0? Only run at track saw him 3rd in the G2 LA Derby this time last year and has been raced lightly with just the 7 starts this year. Trainer has done an exceptional job in 2010 placing him well in races against some good opposition that make this field look like a very sub standard field apart from this guy. His run in the $5 million G1 Sandcastle against the cream of the crop was his career best with a 113 SP at 8.5f for 2nd place and with SP’s of 118 and 116 he certainly looks as if he may blow them away. Won last time out when he went wire to wire in the G3 Patty Ewing by 3 lengths beating Prance by 6 lengths that day. Was outgunned in his run before that by some graded winning horses and made light work of allowance field in his run prior to that. Tipping this guy the winner…

6/ Blazing Wilderness – (4yo colt by Forestry) – 7/2
Has good record on the track with a two 2nd placings at graded level when closing from 9 lengths down at the final call. This 4yo colt is a serious late closer and is he hadn’t failed at a longer trip a couple of times you would swear he was a 10f horse. I have no doubt he will get back – way back. He will close from way back there late and be in the finish. Has really taken the next step this year from allowance horse to graded level performer with wins multiple G3 wins and a good closing 2nd at G2 level at this track. Has back to back 2nd placings at ungraded level in his two lead up runs to this where he has failed to close from such massive deficits in small fields which is a worry. Both of those runs have seen him come up short for the win and against horses of the calibre of K’s Insatiable, he may be made to pay again. Will certainly be close though…

7 / Bones In Traction – (4yo colt by Empire Maker) – 9/1
If the field was bigger, thisguy would be in something different. Good idea to run him in this small field and hope that lightning strikes the rest of the field – leaving Bones to canter home for the win… A great claim by the trainer 14 months ago and even better race placement since them with many cheques coming his way, however this will be too hard for him. Tipping him to follow all horses home as he doesn’t have the form, the ability or the record to prove otherwise. Good race to give him a crack but cannot see him troubling any of these…

So, my predicted finishing order is….

K’sInsatiable by a long way followed by Woozapper and Blazing Wilderness for the Trifecta. Also runs will be Mine Is Dangerous, Prance, Christmas Cheer and Bones

Lets see how it goes – good luck to all and may your stead be nimble…..

[2

post-8690","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-previews
["GET
