South Africa’s first ever millionaire racehorse, Model Man, was euthanased last weekend. He broke a leg after covering a mare and had to be put down at the age of 23. This comes only three months after his sire, Elliodor, died when the infirmities of old age caught up with him.<\/DIV>

Model Man<\/STRONG><\/DIV>
The best produce of Elliodor, Model Man won 14 races from the ages of 2 to 5 over 1100 metres to 2000 metres and became the first horse in South African racing history to earn R1m in stakes. His major victories included:<\/DIV>
3 y\/o – Gr1 Mainstay Handicap (1800m), Gr2 SA Invitation (1600m), Gr3 Natal Guineas (1600m)<\/DIV>
4 y\/o – Gr1 J&B Metropolitan (2000m), Gr1 Schweppes Challenge (1600m), Gr1 Hawaii Stakes (1600m)<\/DIV>
5 y\/o – Gr1 Champion Stakes (2000m)<\/DIV>
Add to this his seconds in the Gr1 July Handicap (2200m) and Gr2 Mainstay Handicap (1800m) as a 4 y\/o and you can see why he was a favourite amongst racegoers around the country.<\/DIV>

He has been a successful sire, producing 658 foals from 15 crops to race including the champion 2 y\/o and now sire, Special Preview. While not reaching the heights of Elliodor as a sire, his name should be carried forward with distinction by many broodmares. He finished last season in 9th position on the South African damsires table, with Elliodor in second place, from a list of 759 damsires that had runners in this country.<\/DIV>

Comparing the average winning distances of his foals to the average sire, he tended to produce 1600\/1800 metre runners with more than his fair share of winners in the 1400\/2000 metre range. He produced the average at longer distance and less than average number of winners in the shorter sprints.<\/DIV>

Pedigree: Model Man is a great grandson of Northern Dancer through Lyphard, and is inbred 6m x 5m, 6m to Fairway, 6m x 6m to Nogara, and 6m a 6f to Pharos. His sire, Elliodor is inbred to Court Martial through two daughters while his dam, Top Model, is inbred to Blue Peter through two sons.<\/DIV>

It’s fitting to add a little more about the great Elliodor. This French bred son of Lyphard has had, and will continue to have, a huge impact on South African racing. From 739 foals (18 crops to race) he has produced no less than 39 group\/graded winners. He was retired from stud duties last year at the age of 27. <\/DIV>

In closing, I would like to encourage readers to consider trying breed a good foal by either Model Man or Elliodor in the sim. They have only got 17 and 16 foals listed respectively for the last 5 seasons with no stakes winners between them, and both are available at bargain prices towards the end of the week, if not sooner.\u00a0Model Man’s best racing son in South Africa by far has been Special Preview. He is out of a granddaughter of Dr Fager and is inbred in the 5th and 6th generations to Blenheim II and Prince Rose. Elliodor’s best son was, of course, Model Man, out of a Filipepi mare with the breeding described above.<\/DIV>
