While the main races this week are the Group 2 New Zealand Drinking Vessel and the Group 1 2000 Dark Beers, the turf sprinters are also catered for in the You Know What Stuart Cap, a mad cap dash down Riccarton’s almost straight 1200m chute.

Fittingly for a six furlong race, six horses have made the final acceptance payment for the Stuart Cap and we’ll cover their chances below:

Drawn the ace is Kiddman’s 3 year old Street Sense colt “The Adult Alarm”, who is least experienced horse in the line up. He’s comes into this after a massive second in the group 2 Ursain Bolt at the Meadowlands at his last start. While his 106 speed there reads impressively at first glance in this field, I for one believe the trainer has him at the right track but in the wrong race.

His last start, his lifetime best was over 9 furlongs and I can’t agree with dropping back a class middle distance horse to 1200 against some seasoned sprinters, esspecially when a 3 year old Group 1 mile was available. Despite this his gate speed and light weight under the conditions will see him carry a lot of support at 5-1 this weekend; it just won’t be my money

The stakes winning Yes Its True 4 year old Entire “Mouse Cat GB” breaks from the 2 alley. While he loves the grass and is a true sprinter, I can’t see him being a factor here either. His moment in the sun came three starts ago in the His Effect Memorial Stakes at the Italian track over 5.5 furlongs, however I believe this was a case of good placement rather than anything else, as his 88 speed was little better than that of maidens. Wishing the connections the best of luck this week but will probably need half the field to fall over to great the judge in this. This is reflected in the bookmakers making him a 15-1 outsider, which in reality is probably robbing the punters.

Second Favorite at 3-1 and starting from the three hole in the English bred Dansili gelding “Tripping on Acid”. By far the most interestedly named horse in the field, the 134th ranked older turf sprinter comes into this off the back of a stakes fourth at Royal Ascot in a 96 speed. Will be on the speed, ether leading or stalking whoever takes the lead. Think one or two of these will carry slightly more guns than this old fella, but he will be there when the whips are cracking. Ensure that he is included in any exacta or trifecta combinations. All in all it should be a successful trip down under for owner/trainer Adamson.

Coming into this start off three straight victories and having his first shot at a graded stakes is the Indian bred “Ivory Prospector”. While elephant hunting may be frowned upon these days, this rapidly maturing three year old could be the dark horse this weekend. During his unbeaten streak he has moved through the grades from conditioned allowance to a punishing 104 win in the Alot Darn challenge at Indiana at his last start. Watch for the son of Ivory Touch to charge late under the urgings of Pete Chamberlin, and at his 9-2 price, I for one will be visiting a local bookie to lay a bet.

The Roman Ruler 4 year old “Pope Mobile” starts in barrier 5 and carries a 9-1 quote. He comes into this off a long flight from Germany where he has recorded a first and a fifth in successive $30,000 allowances. Seems suited at the 1200 meter trip but he will need to produce a career best performance to hit the board here. Once again best of luck to the connections and especially trainer brm003, but I haven’t got him in three.

Finally, rounding out the field is the even money favorite “Filo Beddo”, a four year old son of Teofilo and Sunk the Shagger. Filo Beddo comes into this race off a streak of 13 races dating back to July of last year in which he has posted a three figure speed on no less than twelve occasions. At his last start, he was a fast finishing second in the Sweet Robin Challenge at Randwick.

He’s going to get back in the running and will be closing late on the leaders. All things being equal he should win, but the conditions of this race may work against the favorite and this just puts a element of doubt in my mind. As his career record shows, his fast closing style seems better suited to the 1300-1400 than the 1200, but with the small field here he absolutely deserves to be the favorite and trainer Skunkworks will probably not be blamed for drafting his speech now.

In conclusion, this race appears set up for the closers Fido Beddo and Ivory Prospector. I’m going to go for the up and comer in Ivory Prospector from Filo Beddo and Tripping on Acid but it could just as easy be the other way round.

Best of luck to all connections and I hope everyone has a successful day on the punt.

[2

post-8639","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-previews
["GET
