California alone this week has four grade one races with a grade two as well. The covered race is the Grade 1 Bra Snap Stakes. Bra snaps always an issue for males and even females, this race is dedicated to the fillies and mares. The mile and a sixteenth fast dirt race is for three year olds and up, and carries a purse of $250,000. A field of eight has assembled, with two horses almost already guaranteed a spot in the Breeders’ Bowl Distaff, with three or four others who with a good showing today could make it into the field.

Drawing the rail is sam812218’s Time To Pretend, who is already pretending what it would be like to win a grade one race. Time To Pretend is a four year old daughter of Distorted Humor, out of Project Matter, a daughter of Deputy Minister. Project Matter on the track was a grade one winner, with wins on both surfaces. As a broodmare she has produced nine horses of racing age, with eight of them to win. Three of those eight, including Time To Pretend are graded winners. She also has produced a stakes winner, and two stakes placed runners. Time To Pretend has started nineteen times, and won eight of those times, with a place and three shows to her credit, with earnings of over $350k. Of those eight wins, she has won two grade three races, one of them being at this distance. She comes into this race with two consecutive wins at this distance, and has won five of her last six starts. Typically Pretend won’t be too far off the leaders, but she has won be sitting a few lengths off as well. She definitely won’t let the pacesetter get out of eye sight in any case. Although she has been winning, she is taking a big step up in class, trying her first grade one in a week where all the horses who are going to the BB or close to going are putting in their final runs. At 6/1 if she were my filly I would have held her off for another week or two to duck some of the BB competition. If she runs like she has been in her last two efforts she could surprise.

Babycolt sends out Diabolu’s Paciscor, a filly by one of my favorite sires. Diabolu’s Paciscor is by Rahy, out of Indescribable, a daughter of Sadler’s Wells. Indescribable was a grade three placed stakes winner during her racing days. As a broodmare she has produced three horses of racing age, with two to win. The other winner is a stakes winner, and Paciscor is a graded winner. In twenty one starts she has won seven times, placing five times and showing another three times, earning over $500k. She is currently ranked 39th in the distaff division, a win today may punch her ticket to the Breeders Bowl Distaff. As a three year old she won a grade two and three, but as a four year old she has only hit the board twice in graded races. Babycolt is trying the old turf to dirt surface switch to try to get a firecracker of a race out of Paciscor. It worked before, so why not try it again. In seven starts this year, she has run on the turf five of them. When she switched from dirt to turf back in March she produced a sparkling 111 speed figure of a win in a listed stake. She comes into this race off of a listed stakes win at a mile. At 9/2 she needs this win to get to the BB, not a huge fan with most of her races being on turf this year, its tough to judge her.

Picking up the third post is checkmate4’s Wit Beyond Measure, she’ll need heart beyond measure today to keep her spot in the BB Distaff. Wit Beyond Measure is a four year old daughter of Awesome Again, out of an unraced Seattle Slew mare. In thirteen starts she has six wins, two places, and a show, with earnings of over $350k. Currently she is ranked 12th in Distaff rankings, but that does not include three year olds, so she’ll still need to run well today to solidify her spot in the BB Distaff. Wit is a grade one winner this year, which is also her last win, back in July, in California. So at least we know she likes the California racing surface. Most of her wins come from being on the lead, but she is capable of sitting about a length or two off the lead for the win as well. Her last two races have been disappointments, pressing the pace then tiring to lose by about seven lengths each time. It looks like that grade one took a lot out of her. Looking at her past performances this isn’t untypical of her she usually runs a good race, then a not so good and then another good one. After her first graded victory she bounced in her next race before coming back to win a listed. At 5/1 maybe she needs two bounces to get back to where she needs to be. Third off the grade one win, she needs a good run today to prove it wasn’t a fluke.

Race favorite, Bavmorda from the barn of ceclaim1 will break from the middle post of the field, number four. Bavmorda is a five year old mare by Giant’s Causeway out of an unraced Kingmambo mare. Bavmorda has been to the track thirty two times, winning and placing nine times each, and showing six additional times. She has earned over $790k, and is currently ranked 21st in the Distaff ranks, a win today could get her into the BB Distaff. Bavmorda spent the first half of her career on turf, then switched to the dirt late in her three year old year. In the past year she’s run into a bit of tough luck, with only one win, which was in her last outing, a grade 2 in NJ. Of her seven races this year six of them were triple digit speed figures. She even lost with speed figures of 111 and 114, which can hardly be called running off form. Besides her grade two win last time out she has a pair of grade two and three placings. Bavmorda is a deep closer, so while she needs a pace to run at, if she meets a horse who has lasting speed it makes it hard for her to win. At 5/2 maybe that last win was a wake up call to her and she’ll want to get back to that winner’s circle again, and she surely needs it to go to the BB Distaff. However she is running against grade one winners who have more than one win in the past year.

Picking up the fifth starting slot in the field is toreup’s Portrait, who looks to have her picture taken in her first try against older horses. Portrait is a three year old filly by Distorted Humor, out of Picture, a horse by A.P. Indy. On the track Picture only got his photo taken once in ten starts, hardly living up to his pedigree potential. At least Picture’s only progeny has proved to be much better on the track. In eleven starts Portrait has won five times, finishing second once, and third three times. With earnings of just over $500k, she is currently ranked 10th among three year old Distaff fillies. She will need a good run today to make it o the BB Distaff. A grade two winner against fillies of her own age, she tries older fillies and mares for the first time. With two wins in six starts this year she has only finished off the board twice, both times in tough grade ones. Portrait’s running style usually has her within four lengths of the lead, if not closer. Her trainer has been talking about her back in the barn area this week and believes she should be sitting on a huge race. At 8/1 its always tough trying older horses for the first time, she has the speed to run with these girls, but will it be enough? Her trainer rarely sends out a horse he doesn’t believe can win the race, so we’ll just have to wait and see if Portrait is standing pretty in the winner’s circle getting her photo taken.

Huberteng’s Bosunshine will be searching for the sunshine beyond her competitor’s today. Bosunshine is a four year old filly by Pivotal out of an unraced Seattle Slew mare. Bosunshine has won seven of twenty one starts, with six placings, and earnings of more than $380k. Currently ranked 36th in Distaff rankings, with a win it may be possible to earn a spot in the BB Distaff. Bosunshine is a grade two placed stakes winning mare, who has not won in over nine months, meaning no wins in 2010. Last time out she was a length and a half from breaking a five race losing streak. Two back she finished a disappointing eighth to race entrant Wit Beyond Measure. Bosunshine used to run on the lead, but changed tactics about a year ago which led to two listed stakes wins, but nothing since. Her current running style has her coming from well off the pace to close, which she’s gotten close a couple times, but no cigar. Four of her six starts this year have resulted in a triple digit speed figure. Bosunshine has gotten a little bit of a freshening with nearly two months off since her last race which may help her today. At 5/1 she’s been close, but without a win this year I just don’t like her chances today.

Wfstables1’s So Anxious draws the seven hole, and could cause her trainer some anxious moments if she winds up on the lead. So Anxious is a four year old daughter of Broken Vow out of Fire N Desire, a Storm Cat mare. Fire N Desire was a grade two winner in her racing days, and as a broodmare has produced seven horses of racing age, and will be available to be bred by anyone come October. All seven of her foals have been winners, with only So Anxious being at least graded placed. So Anxious has raced sixteen times, winning six times, placing five and finishing third three other times, with career earnings of more than $280k. Finishing on the board in fourteen of sixteen teen starts is a grand accomplishment. However she comes into this race winless in more than six months. Her last win was in an open allowance race back in January. So Anxious is also trying the turf to dirt switch to try to wake her up. Typically she’s very fowardly placed, if not on the lead. This race lacks a dedicated lead horse, so Anxious may end up on the lead. Her last two races have been short on speed figures, but the previous nine races had speed figures of 100 or more. At 8/1 for a horse who is off winning form, she is taking a huge step up in class trying to earn her first graded stakes win. Even if she tries to wire the field, I think she’ll get caught by one of the closers, so I’m going to have to pass on this one.

Rounding out the field is victoria’s Ratondra, an outsider besides being in the eight hole. Ratondra is a five year old daughter of A.P. Indy, out of an unraced Nijinsky II mare. Winning fifty percent of her races, Ratondra has won twelve of twenty four starts, finishing second seven times and third three times. Ratondra has earned over $270k and is a listed stakes winner. Today marks her graded stakes debut. With eight wins in the past twelve months, its hard to fault this mare, besides running against much easier competition than she’ll face here today. Most of her victories have come from on the lead, but last tim eout she sat about two lengths off the pace to win. She won her last start impressively by four lengths, but it was an open allowance race and only posted a 94 speed figure. Most likely she’ll be out of the lead, possibly with company from So Anxious, or another contender. Her best chance at doing well today is to break like a bullet from the gate and not look back. At 8/1 I’m not sure why she isn’t at higher odds, mainly an allowance winner, with just two stakes wins. Although many of today’s entrants have been off form, this is still a huge step up in class without good cause.

After looking at these horses I’m seeing that there may not be anyone with a guarantee to get to the BB Distaff, but several with good performances today could find themselves in KY in November. My picks are: Wit Beyond Measure, Portrait, and Diabolu’s Paciscor . Good luck to everyone, may your horses run fast and return to their stables safely.

[2

post-8489","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-previews
["GET
