Today’s featured event is a Grade 3 for juveniles going 5f on the turf. We have some bright future stars possibly here today in this small field. The race appears to be stocked with early speed and this will be a furious dash that will last 58 seconds and change. The winner will get some nice graded points to continue their hopes to the BB in October. These types of races give their trainers an idea as to where their horse is in term of training. Some will continue their journey of graded races, and some may revert back to allowance to get a more precise perspective on their horse. With no further adieu, let’s get to these speedy youngsters, starting from the rail out.

1) Cacao Beans- Smokeglack- Universal Racing Club- Trainer Smokeglack (talking in 3rd person I guess) brings a daughter of Special Week (38%) here after a Msw victory just 2 weeks ago in New Zealand. In that effort, Cacao Beans was rtg, and she came out running at the sound of the bell. She sat 2nd by a ½ length and took control at the top of the lane and won by an expanding 1 ½. The trainer brings this horse here today for 3 reasons. The first being that her mommy was a very fast sprinter (B grade) and won both her starts at 2 years old. The second reason being a small field will give her trainer a gauge as to how good she may or may not be. She was entered in an allowance race, where there was a few in there that may have tested her collectively better than her start here. The reason for the 2 week turnaround is that her mommy had similar traits and she often did well on the quick turn around. Coincidence?, maybe. For today’s race Cacao Beans has a tough task here. Being a filly, she must improve quickly off her 2 week turn around. What she does have in her favor is speed. If she can run like her mommy did, she will hit the front and not look back. Should be better tuned with a sharp status and 2nd race. Lot of questions for this gal today, but will let Smoke know where to go next.

2) Sluggy Trouble- Npark- Comedy Central Residency- Trainer Npark brings a son of Discreet Cat (24%) to the post today with having had 4 starts already to the young season. In his debut race in Washington, Sluggy wasted no time in ridding his maiden ranks. He pretty much went wire to wire on the field and earned a 63 for his victory. One month later, Sluggy would ship across the pond to race in Tasmania in an allowance nw1x race. Going off at 3-1 in the 4 horse field, Sluggy would break 3rd but spot the leaders only 1 length through the 1st 2 furlongs of the race. He would take the lead at that marker and draw away through the stretch to a 1 ¼ length victory. His speed number increased 10 full points from his maiden win. 4 weeks later, NPark would keep the young guy in Australia and send him in a 6f open allowance race to face 5 others. He broke a bit more slowly in this one and he came through the stretch closing this time to miss by 2 ¼ lengths. He earned a +1 speed of 74 for his effort. In his last, Sluggy would line up in the $100,000 Feeling Bad Stakes. Facing 7 others, Sluggy (I just like saying his name a lot) would again break more towards the rear; a move that he didn’t do in his first 2 efforts. He would again be making up ground and finish 4th again, missing by only 2 ¾ lengths. So today, Npark answers with reason and sends him back to a distance he’s won on 2x already. A graded race of this size, a distance he’s won, facing a filly all adds up to being a great start for him. The questions surrounding him today are: His speed numbers have steadied out in last 3 races and may a switchback to the 5f will help surge him one more time? Will he keep developing fast enough for him to stay around this company for long? Will definitely answer some questions today, but with the top 2 lines being dirt related, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him resurface in a dirt race next out. Definitely capable of winning this today, but could he actually be wasting his time on this surface? Dunno, but expect him to be 3rd down the backside today and make a late move to try to mow them down. 2-1 and Williams in the irons for NPark.

3) Standing Order- Dixie- Pastures Of Green Residency- Trainer Dixie brings a son of More Than Ready (41%) to post here today. Standing Order is from a mommy that knows a thing or 2 about stakes and graded babies. She has produced 2 graded winners, a stakes winner, and a stakes placed horse for her resume. So Standing Orders is in line to follow home his ½ brothers and sisters. Standing Order started his career on dirt in a msw race in Pennsylvania. In that 6f race, Standing Order would go off the fav in a 7 horse field. He would sit 2nd throughout, and revert back just a bit in the stretch to finish 4th, beaten 3 ½ lengths. Dixie decided to give the-what seems multi-bred surface guy a change to the turf. In Maryland 5 weeks later, Standing Order would again go off favorite against 8 others. With a race under his belt, and a surface that fit his liking, Standing Order would go wire to wire on the field. His speed number went up 7 points, as he earned a 72 for his efforts. For today’s race, I think Standing Order and Cacao Beans will tear off together through the first stages of this short race. They must make sure not to kill each other up front, as that would set it up for Sluggy or Mr. Schu. If he can get a good lead early and comfortable, he could very easily wire this field. A solid threat today for Dixie. Even money fav and gets 2nd leading rider Bradley.

4) Mr. Schu- PaulieV- A son of English Channel comes here today after breaking his maiden on dirt last time out. His first effort was a turf try in Illinois. In that race, Mr. Schu faced 7 others and finished 5th, getting tired late. In his last, a MSW race in Idaho, Mr. Schu would go post wards as the favorite and he did not disappoint. Facing 4 others, Mr. Schu would go wire to wire and win by an expanding 1 ¾ lengths. Today, PaulieV switches him back to his original surface in hopes that the 1st effort was maybe sub par due to a RTG horse. His sire suggests turf and he’s here today to give this guy another shot. He picks a great small field to test his theory out here, and if he does improve, he is capable of winning here today. The slight negative is his sire is generally a better older turf horse, but he can belie that cause for concern if he can duplicate his last wire to wire effort on dirt. Should be in the mix early with Cacao Beans and Standing Order. His speed number was higher on turf, albeit a loss compared to a win, but that’s what the trainers doing in here today. He will alleviate some guess work as to his next start by his performance today. 5/2 and Cooper in the irons for PaulieV.

Smoke’s Anaylsis:

Great small race we have here today as not sure what to expect here today. We have a filly facing boys, a colt who lost on turf but won on dirt and is back to turf here, Sluggy who closes at 6f but goes wire to wire at 5f, and a horse that won fto on turf.

So we all possible scenarios covered here guys. I’ll give my stab at 4 (well thanks Smoke, there is only 4)…but probably not the right order.

1) Standing Order- Took to the turf when put on for 1st time and mommy throws out graded winners like most do claimers. Bred to win early and seems like capable of surge in numbers and that would be enough to hold off the rest

2) Cacao Beans- Filly comes back in 2 weeks rest but also has bloodlines to win early. Be interesting if she gets the lead or will she defer to Standing Order. Imperative for her not to get caught up in duel with Standing Order.

3) Sluggy Trouble- My man Sluggy has experience over the field and just needs to get a surge here today. He is definitely capable of doing so with this smaller field, but if he runs his last 3 average of 73, he’s not going to get it done today. Definitely a threat if he can in fact improve off his last couple. May pick up all the pieces late if top 2 falter at all.

4) Mr. Schu- Think trainer did a great move by throwing him back to turf after his dirt victory. Better to find out young if in fact he didn’t like the turf as much as the dirt, but always keeping in mind the rtg aspect and a horse who may be still developing. Wiseguy horse here today and capable of winning this if he can take his lst race dirt form and transition it back to turf.

Anyway, that’s it from Newmarket and best of luck to all here today and in these young horses future.
