In any other year, they\u2019d have conceded the Breeders\u2019 Bowl already.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>In any other year, we\u2019d be talking \u201cgreatest ever.\u201d\u00a0 <\/SPAN>In any other year, Sunnybank Memorial would have locked up Horse of the Year.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>But in 2005, we\u2019re still debating the best 12 furlong turf horse.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Perhaps it is Sunnybank Memorial<\/B>, who here this week in New York<\/st1:State> faces just 6 contestants in the G1 Classic Turf Stakes of 12 furlongs of firm New York<\/st1:State><\/st1:place> sod.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Perhaps the best is somewhere across the Atlantic Ocean, where the three year old superstar Horseshoe Bay<\/B> lines up against elders for the first time this week.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Maybe, the best turf horse is in the barn this week; divisional heavyweights Allied Assault<\/B> and Rain God <\/B>seem to have already completed their Breeders\u2019 Bowl preparations.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Nobody can say for sure exactly how those four sort out against each other, and there are a few major players still hanging around the edges that may have a shot at glory in several weeks.<\/FONT><\/P>

\u00a0<\/FONT><\/o:p><\/P>

But we\u2019re getting ahead of ourselves.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Today is about one horse.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Sunnybank Memorial, who has answered questions time and time again, winning against all sorts of company and winning with style.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Here, the massive son of A.P. Indy looms as a 3\/5 favorite for trainer sunnybank<\/I>, and barring disaster, he looks to be the only conceivable winner in what is surely his final prep before attempting a defense of his Breeders\u2019 Bowl title against competition of a markedly higher class than he sees today.<\/FONT><\/P>

That said, there\u2019s a lot of money on the line, and six trainers are holding out hope that today is the day the champion can be cracked.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>We\u2019ll take a look at the field in post position order:<\/FONT><\/P>

Far more likely than the scenario discussed with Shasim Hollandia, however, is that this one, actually a G1 winner, will be hooked early by his younger counterpart starting one gate to his left and both will be cooked by the time Sunnybank Memorial turns on the afterburners through the stretch.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>This one gained a first-hand look at the big horse\u2019s unbelievable stretch kick when he spit the bit through the stretch of the Man of War Stakes (G1) last time out and came home a well-beaten 9th<\/SUP>.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>His class says that he should be the best of the rest (he\u2019s ranked 6th<\/SUP> in the division), but he\u2019ll not come close to getting his picture taken.<\/o:p><\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/P><\/TD><\/TR>

A three year old, and a filly.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>She\u2019s a G1 winner and ranked 3rd<\/SUP> in her division, but she faces males for the first time and older for just the second time.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>This trip is a little bit shorter than her best (surprising, for a horse by Kingmambo out of a Storm Bird mare, but I suppose with a record as developed as this one you must trust the performances over pedigree!), and its just too much to ask of a three year old\u00a0 <\/SPAN>filly to take aim at a horse like Sunnybank Memorial.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>That said, if Dancin In Seattle\u2019s early lead is contested, she could come running for 2nd<\/SUP> money.<\/o:p><\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/P><\/TD><\/TR>

Bred to get the trip, and if you excuse the dismal effort over 16 panels last time out, his record over 12 furlongs is solid, but he is a lousy 2: 0-0-0 over the lawn.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>He\u2019s bred to enjoy it, and with his only two starts over turf as a two year old (when even over dirt he was a claimer), he must be given another shot.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>However, this is his 16th<\/SUP> race this campaign, so he may be needing a break.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>That said, you can find another point lending him support: he\u2019s consistently inconsistent, turning in consecutive good and then bad races, a pattern that dates back a full 8 races.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>His last \u201cbad\u201d race, however, was very bad.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>He\u2019ll need quite a rebound to make a difference.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Long and the short of it?\u00a0 <\/SPAN>This is the wildcard of the field.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>He could finish anywhere from 2nd<\/SUP> to 7th<\/SUP>.<\/o:p><\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/P><\/TD><\/TR><\/TBODY><\/TABLE><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
