“I just bred this horse, what is it going to want?\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Turf or dirt?\u00a0 <\/SPAN><\/PRE><\/SPAN>Sprints or Routes?\u00a0 <\/SPAN>What should I expect?”<\/PRE>\u00a0<\/o:p><\/PRE>This (or some variation on it) is probably the single most commonly <\/PRE>asked question in the game.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>The honest truth is that, unless you used <\/PRE>the “random breeding” feature, you’re asking the question too late.\u00a0 <\/SPAN><\/PRE><\/SPAN>It is best to decide what kind of horse you want before you breed it, <\/PRE>and then find the sires that are most likely to produce that kind of <\/PRE>runner.<\/PRE>\u00a0<\/o:p><\/PRE>But if you didn’t do that (or haven’t bred a horse yet and want to know <\/PRE>what to look for) here are some ways to figure out what that new horse <\/PRE>might want to do.<\/PRE>\u00a0<\/o:p><\/PRE>A good place to start is the sire\u2019s Sim stats.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Look up the sire on the <\/PRE>horse ticker and click on the \u201cs\u201d next to his name.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>This will give you <\/PRE>a quick overview of how well that sire\u2019s offspring have done in the game.\u00a0 <\/SPAN><\/PRE><\/SPAN>The first section will show the number of runners, the percent that <\/PRE>have won a race, won a stakes race, and won a graded stakes race.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>It <\/PRE>also shows the total money earned and the amount earned per starter.\u00a0 <\/SPAN><\/PRE><\/SPAN>This is useful information in determining the likely quality of the <\/PRE>horse you have bred, or going to breed.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>But it won\u2019t necessarily help <\/PRE>you decide where to run your horse first.<\/PRE>\u00a0<\/o:p><\/PRE>The last two columns are what we\u2019re going to focus on.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>If you look at <\/PRE>the right side of the screen, you will see a column headed \u201cD$\/T$ %\u201d and <\/PRE>a second column \u201cS$\/R$ %.\u201d These show the percent of earnings broken <\/PRE>down by surface and distance.<\/PRE>\u00a0<\/o:p><\/PRE>Look up Diesis(GB), for example.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>The total in the \u201cD$\/T$\u201d column says <\/PRE>24%\/76%.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>24% of the money earned by sim horses sired by Diesis was <\/PRE>earned in dirt races, while 76% was earned in turf races.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Clearly, <\/PRE>Diesis(GB) is a strong turf influence.\u00a0 <\/SPAN><\/PRE>\u00a0<\/o:p><\/PRE>The \u201cS$\/R$\u201d column shows 26%\/74%. 26% of the money was earned in sprints, <\/PRE>while 74% was earned in routes.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>So Diesis(GB) is a strong route <\/PRE>influence as well as a turf influence.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>The logical place to start a <\/PRE>horse sired by Diesis(GB) would be a turf route.<\/PRE>\u00a0<\/o:p><\/PRE>If you look up Orientate, you will get results that are almost the <\/PRE>opposite of those for Diesis(GB).\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Orientate\u2019s offspring have earned <\/PRE>63% of their money on dirt, and only 37% on turf.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>They have also earned <\/PRE>73% of their money sprinting, and only 27% routing.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>So if your horse is <\/PRE>sired by Orientate, a dirt sprint would be your best starting race.<\/PRE>\u00a0<\/o:p><\/PRE>The sim also has statistics for dam\u2019s sires, but doesn\u2019t have information <\/PRE>for dam\u2019s dam\u2019s sires. <\/PRE>\u00a0<\/o:p><\/PRE>You do want to be cautious if the sire has a limited number of offspring.\u00a0 <\/SPAN><\/PRE><\/SPAN>Groovy Jett, for example, has only 9 runners in the last 5 years, and <\/PRE>well over half the earnings came from a single horse.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Groovy Jett may <\/PRE>be a turf sprint influence as the breakdown of percentages indicates. <\/PRE>Or he may have had a single daughter who could sprint on turf but he <\/PRE>is actually a dirt influence or a route influence.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>I honestly don’t <\/PRE>know.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>With a small number of offspring, it\u2019s hard to be certain how <\/PRE>seriously to take the numbers.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>In spite of these limitations, the Sim <\/PRE>sire stats are still a great place to start.<\/PRE>\u00a0<\/o:p><\/PRE>\u00a0<\/o:p><\/PRE>There are a lot of other resources out there too – YOSS.info, <\/PRE>pedigreequery.com, bloodhorse.com, and thoroughbredtimes.com, just to <\/PRE>name a few.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Of these, YOSS.info is the only one that is based on the <\/PRE>Sim.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>The others are sites for real, flesh and blood horses.<\/PRE>\u00a0<\/o:p><\/PRE>At YOSS.info, you can look up a sire by name or ID, and see his sire, <\/PRE>dam\u2019s sire (DS), or dam\u2019s dam\u2019s sire (DDS) information.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>You can also <\/PRE>search for offspring based on age, and sort by highest speed figure on <\/PRE>dirt or turf, number of wins, and by other sires in the pedigree.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>This <\/PRE>can be very helpful in planning a mating.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Say you have decided you <\/PRE>want a turf router, and have chosen Theatrical(IRE) as the sire.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Go to <\/PRE>YOSS.info and looking up Theatrical\u2019s offspring ages 4 and up.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Sort by <\/PRE>\u201cTurfMX\u201d and the list will be sorted by highest speed figure earned on <\/PRE>turf. The top three horses listed have Roberto, Halo, and Rahy as <\/PRE>dam\u2019s sire.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>All three of these horses have Hail to Reason in their <\/PRE>pedigree, so a son or grandson of Hail to Reason would be a good choice <\/PRE>as dam\u2019s sire.<\/PRE>\u00a0<\/o:p><\/PRE>You may be asking \u201cHow did Delta know that they all have Hail to Reason <\/PRE>in their pedigree?\u201d\u00a0 <\/SPAN>No, I don’t have a photographic memory of the <\/PRE>pedigree of sires like Roberto.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>I went to pedigreequery.com and looked <\/PRE>them up.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>You can also look up their pedigree in the Sim, using either <\/PRE>the 2x or 5x links next to the sire\u2019s name in the horse ticker.\u00a0 <\/SPAN><\/PRE><\/SPAN>Pedigreequery.com provides some useful information that isn’t avilable <\/PRE>on the Sim’s pedigree report such as dosage, progeny reports, and <\/PRE>reports on stakes races the horse ran in.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>This can give you an idea <\/PRE>about what sort of an influence a sire will be, though sometimes a horse <\/PRE>that ran on dirt can be a turf sire or a horse with a low dosage <\/PRE>(indicating stamina) can produce mostly sprinters. <\/PRE>\u00a0<\/o:p><\/PRE>Thoroughbredtimes.com and bloodhorse.com both have sire lists and <\/PRE>stallion registers that you can use to find information about sires or <\/PRE>browse to find new sires to use.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Bloodhorse.com also has a list of <\/PRE>sires of turf runners that includes a percent of earnings.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>This is <\/PRE>another useful tool in finding turf sires.<\/PRE>\u00a0<\/o:p><\/PRE>Whatever resource you use, always keep in mind that pedigree doesn’t <\/PRE>necessarily run true.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>If it did, Cigar would have made a name for <\/PRE>himself of turf.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>So be sure to give your horse a try on each surface, <\/PRE>and sprinting as well as routing.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>You’ll never really know what your <\/PRE>horse is best at until you’ve given it a chance to tell you. <\/PRE><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"You’ve just gotten your new horse.
