Fourteen two-year-old fillies will walk onto the Surrey turf Saturday carrying r\u00e9sum\u00e9s built in Ireland, Germany, France, South Africa, Dubai, Japan and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some already know what a mile feels like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some are about to find out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are undefeated fillies. Grade II and Grade III winners. A Grade I runner-up. Lightly raced horses whose ceilings remain almost completely unknown. And several talented sprinters being asked to carry their speed farther than ever before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But perhaps the most important thing they bring is speed \u2014 lots of it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Galinton likes the front. Hushwing Wing practically insists upon it. Some Call It Fate has never experienced anything except leading a race. New Wotton Shire knows that territory well, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That creates opportunity behind them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because Saturday\u2019s Filly Grand Prix may not be won by the filly who gets there first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It may be won by the one who knows how to wait<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#1 THE UNBALANCED \u2014 One More Step<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Unbalanced arrives at her first route with something useful already on the r\u00e9sum\u00e9: graded stakes form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a difficult March effort, she improved sharply at 6\u00bd furlongs in Germany, sitting just behind the leader before taking command and winning by 2\u00bc lengths with a 79.400<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then came the Grade III Princess Margo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Unbalanced settled fifth, began creeping closer and finished second, beaten only 1\u00bc lengths while recording a 78.661<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She\u2019s now finished first or second in three of four starts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saturday presents a much larger question. Every race of her career has been a sprint, and she now jumps from six furlongs directly to a mile against the strongest field she\u2019s encountered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her recent races say she belongs in good company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now she must prove she belongs at the distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond the Wire:<\/strong> At 19\/1, The Unbalanced doesn\u2019t need to be the obvious horse. She only needs to be the filly who handles the extra ground better than expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#2 LION QUEEN STAR \u2014 Two Races, Two Answers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two starts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two wins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And Lion Queen Star has already answered one of Saturday\u2019s biggest questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She can run a mile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her debut came at 7\u00bd furlongs on yielding Irish turf, where she went directly to the front and held on to win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then she returned five weeks later on firm ground at a mile and showed something different. Rather than demanding the lead, she sat second, waited, took command and exploded away by 6\u00bc lengths<\/strong>, producing an 89.445<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saturday\u2019s pace could become crowded, and Lion Queen Star has already demonstrated that she doesn\u2019t have to win the argument into the first turn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her pedigree offers little reason to fear the distance, either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond the Wire:<\/strong> Undefeated is impressive. Undefeated and adaptable is considerably more dangerous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#3 VIOLET STARR \u2014 Worth the Wait<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seven months separated Violet Starr\u2019s first and second starts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apparently, she used the time well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her January debut at five furlongs produced a three-length victory and a 73.473<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then she disappeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Violet Starr returned in Germany on August 8, she wasn\u2019t merely better. She looked like a different racehorse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stretching all the way to a mile, she settled third, took command and drew away by five lengths<\/strong>, recording an 89.310<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s nearly a sixteen-point improvement while simultaneously tackling a substantially longer distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now comes the Grade I test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She\u2019s still inexperienced. We have only two races from which to judge her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But both ended the same way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond the Wire:<\/strong> Seven months turned Violet Starr from a promising sprinter into an 89-speed-figure miler. What did the last six weeks do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#4 XODROTS \u2014 The Fast Filly With One Question<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nobody needs to wonder whether Xodrots is in form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her last race answered that emphatically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After spending the first half of the season competing in shorter turf races around the world, Xodrots arrived at Surrey for the seven-furlong Grade III Prestige.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She sat third.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She waited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then she went.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Xodrots took command and won by 1\u00be lengths while posting a 90.313<\/strong> \u2014 one of the two fastest figures anyone in Saturday\u2019s field has produced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She\u2019s also one of the more experienced fillies here, with six races already behind her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But none has been a route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The extra furlong is the question, and her speed-oriented pedigree makes it a legitimate one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, 12\/1 on a Grade III winner coming off a 90<\/strong> is difficult to ignore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond the Wire:<\/strong> We already know Xodrots is fast enough. Saturday is about discovering whether that speed lasts for one more furlong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#5 SOME CALL IT FATE \u2014 The Mystery<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

How good is Some Call It Fate?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nobody knows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There has been exactly one race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She debuted at a mile on firm turf, went straight to the front, widened her advantage at every call and came home 4\u00be lengths clear<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The figure was a relatively modest 80.348<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But what happens when a two-year-old wins that easily in her first start?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did we see everything she had?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Probably not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the pedigree \u2014 Dubawi, Sea The Stars and Sadler\u2019s Wells<\/strong> \u2014 looks completely at home in a turf mile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The problem Saturday is that she won\u2019t own the front end by herself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some Call It Fate is about to experience pressure, traffic and Grade I competition for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond the Wire:<\/strong> Her first race told us she can win. Her second may finally tell us how good she is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#6 IN HOUSE STAR \u2014 Coming From Behind<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In House Star has already learned something that could become extremely valuable Saturday:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She knows how to pass horses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last time in the Grade III Calvados, she was eighth early in a fourteen-horse field. She began moving through traffic, reached third and then blew past the leaders to win by 3\u00bc lengths<\/strong> with an 87.018<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That wasn\u2019t her first glimpse of ability. She had previously produced an 82 while winning at 6\u00bd furlongs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The concern is the mile. All four career starts have been sprints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But with Pioneerof the Nile and A.P. Indy sitting behind Zoustar in the pedigree, there are reasons to believe she can stretch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And if the front-runners make Saturday\u2019s opening half-mile uncomfortable, In House Star may find herself in exactly the race she wants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond the Wire:<\/strong> First-time route runners have questions. In House Star has one answer already: if they come back to her, she knows what to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#7 NIGHT OF MADNESS \u2014 Getting Better When It Matters<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Night of Madness may have found herself last time out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After winning her maiden in March, she went through three months without another victory. Then she stepped into the seven-furlong Grade II Young Lady.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From post fourteen, she dropped back to eleventh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then tenth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then ninth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And finally second<\/strong>, beaten just three-quarters of a length.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The resulting 83.557<\/strong> was easily the best figure of her career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now add another furlong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a filly who does her best running late and carries Night Of Thunder, Teofilo and Dubawi in the pedigree, that doesn\u2019t sound like punishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She still needs another step forward to catch the fastest members of this field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At 14\/1, however, that\u2019s precisely why she\u2019s interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond the Wire:<\/strong> Night of Madness finally gets the distance her running style has been asking for. The question is whether the improvement arrives quickly enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#8 DIVINE DELIGHT \u2014 The One Coming Late<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Divine Delight erased the deficit and won her first attempt at a mile with an 89.098<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It continued an impressive progression from 76 to 82 to 89<\/strong>, and she has now won two of three starts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She has also already demonstrated the one quality that could become enormously important Saturday: patience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While several rivals argue over the early pace, Divine Delight doesn\u2019t need to participate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She can wait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dubawi over Giant\u2019s Causeway and Seeking The Gold offers further confidence that the mile is where she belongs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond the Wire:<\/strong> If Saturday becomes a waiting game, Divine Delight has already shown she knows how to play it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#9 GALINTON \u2014 The Class Standard<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Galinton has the r\u00e9sum\u00e9 everyone else is trying to build.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She won her first three starts, including the Grade III Capital Stakes, largely by putting herself on or near the lead and daring somebody to come get her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then came the Grade I Wet Bikini Stakes at a mile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Galinton again went to the front, controlled the race into the stretch and finally met the first horse capable of getting past her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She lost by half a length<\/strong>, producing an 86.987<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saturday brings another Grade I and another mile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But this time there are several fillies interested in her preferred position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond the Wire:<\/strong> Galinton doesn\u2019t need to prove she belongs. She needs to prove she can survive a front end that may be considerably more crowded this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#10 BLACK ON ALERT \u2014 The Quiet Threat<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

She debuted at 6\u00bd furlongs, sat third, moved forward and won by 4\u00be lengths<\/strong> with an 84.149<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then came the mile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Again, she didn\u2019t need the lead. Black on Alert settled fourth, moved to third, then second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And when it was time?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She won by 5\u00bd lengths<\/strong> and produced a 90.530<\/strong> \u2014 the fastest figure in Saturday\u2019s field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s an awfully compelling r\u00e9sum\u00e9 packed into two starts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She is already proven at the distance. She has shown tactical versatility. And unlike the speed horses around her, she doesn\u2019t need to become involved in the early fight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond the Wire:<\/strong> Fourteen fillies bring fourteen different stories to Surrey. Right now, Black on Alert brings the fastest one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#11 NEW WOTTON SHIRE \u2014 No Secret About the Plan<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

She has shown speed from the opening gate throughout her four-race career, including a maiden victory where she led throughout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most recently, she again went directly to the lead in the Rat On A Stick Stakes and held it until the final stages before finishing second with a career-best 78.143<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now comes the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That race was five furlongs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saturday is eight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And this time Galinton, Hushwing Wing and Some Call It Fate may have ideas about the lead themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At 22\/1, she\u2019s being asked for an enormous step forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But she may have a major say in how this race unfolds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond the Wire:<\/strong> New Wotton Shire may be a longshot on the tote board, but everybody interested in the early lead will know exactly where she is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#12 IMPACT OF TROY \u2014 Bred for the Moment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Impact of Troy has progressed from an 82<\/strong> debut victory to figures of 85, 83 and 87<\/strong>, competing between 6\u00bd and seven furlongs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most recently, she finished third in the Grade III Prestige, beaten only 1\u00be lengths by Xodrots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She\u2019s never raced a mile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But City Of Troy \u00d7 Sea The Stars \u00d7 Deep Impact<\/strong> hardly makes the additional furlong look frightening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her running style helps too. Impact of Troy doesn\u2019t need the lead. She can settle in the middle of the field and begin working forward as the race develops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saturday may finally give her the distance her pedigree has been promising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond the Wire:<\/strong> Some horses have to outrun their pedigree. Impact of Troy merely needs to live up to hers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#13 HUSHWING WING \u2014 The Pace Has a Name<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hushwing Wing has made her intentions obvious throughout her eight-race career. She wants the lead, and lately she\u2019s become increasingly difficult to catch once she gets it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She won a six-furlong allowance in July after controlling every call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then she stepped into the Grade II Lowdown at Surrey and did it again, opening a sizable advantage and holding on to win with an 80.192<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That gives her consecutive victories and a Grade II trophy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now comes the mile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She\u2019s never raced beyond 6\u00bd furlongs, although Frankel \u00d7 Tapit \u00d7 In The Wings<\/strong> gives her every opportunity to handle more ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The larger issue may be how much company she gets early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond the Wire:<\/strong> Hushwing Wing has spent the summer daring horses to catch her. Saturday, the distance may join the chase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#14 AS SHE WOULD \u2014 Already Been Here<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

While several contenders arrive imagining what Grade I competition at a mile might feel like, As She Would doesn\u2019t have to imagine anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She\u2019s already done it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her three-race progression has been excellent: 78 \u2192 81 \u2192 86<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last time in the Grade I Wet Bikini Stakes, As She Would settled seventh in a fourteen-horse field, remained patient down the backstretch, then began advancing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She reached third and finished there, only 1\u00bc lengths<\/strong> behind the winner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now she gets another mile and another Grade I.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And a pedigree of Frankel \u00d7 Curlin \u00d7 Giant\u2019s Causeway<\/strong> gives no reason to believe she\u2019s reached the end of her development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She isn\u2019t the fastest filly on paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She may be one of the most battle-ready.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond the Wire:<\/strong> Experience doesn\u2019t guarantee victory. But when fourteen two-year-olds enter a Grade I, knowing you\u2019ve already belonged there matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

RACE SHAPE \u2014 The Filly Who Waits<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The opening quarter could tell us a great deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hushwing Wing<\/strong> wants the front.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So does Galinton<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some Call It Fate<\/strong> led every step of her only race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Wotton Shire<\/strong> has repeatedly gone straight to the lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And Lion Queen Star<\/strong> has speed, although importantly, she\u2019s already demonstrated that she can surrender the lead and still win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nobody has to create a suicidal pace for this race to become uncomfortable. There are simply too many fillies accustomed to occupying the same part of the turf.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s where things become interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Immediately behind them should be horses such as Black on Alert, Violet Starr, Impact of Troy and The Unbalanced<\/strong>, all capable of allowing someone else to do the early work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Farther back, Divine Delight, In House Star and Night of Madness<\/strong> have demonstrated that they can make substantial late moves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Xodrots may occupy that valuable territory somewhere between the groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s why Saturday may ultimately reward something these two-year-olds are still learning:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

patience.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The winner may not be the filly who gets to the first turn fastest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She may be the one whose rider is comfortable watching somebody else do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
