The $7.88 Million Question: How Much Can One Horse Really Earn?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the final bid was placed on Pretzel Wands, the number was almost hard to believe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

$7,888,889.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That was the price required to acquire the accomplished mare when the hammer finally fell this week. And when an auction reaches that level, it naturally raises a bigger question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can a racehorse actually earn that kind of money back on the track?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The answer is yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Derby Fever history also shows just how extraordinary a horse has to be to do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pretzel Wands’ sale sent us digging through the record books, looking not simply for horses who earned $7.88 million, but for the richest runners the game has ever produced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What we found was a remarkable collection of champions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seventeen horses on the list we compiled have surpassed $10 million in career earnings. Two broke the seemingly impossible $20 million barrier. And the five horses at the very top reached those numbers in completely different ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Editor’s Note: <\/strong>Derby Fever has been online since 1998 and has produced an enormous number of horses over the years. This list was compiled from the historical records we were able to identify and is not presented as an infallible all-time database. If we missed a horse who belongs among these career earnings leaders, let us know. We’ll be happy to give that horse the recognition it deserves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With that said, these are some of the horses that established the financial ceiling in Derby Fever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And at the top sits a turtle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Spiced Turtle<\/a> – $21,541,974<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Career: 25 starts – 16 wins – 1 second – 2 thirds<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pedigree: Sebring x Sadler’s Wells x Roberto<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Surface: Turf<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Routes: 22 starts, 14 wins<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Career Earnings: $21,541,974<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are horses who accumulate enormous earnings through longevity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spiced Turtle<\/a> wasn’t one of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He needed only 25 career starts to accumulate $21,541,974.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sixteen victories from 25 starts represents a staggering 64% career win rate, and nearly every dollar came on turf. His 24 grass starts produced 16 victories and more than $21.54 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More impressive is where he earned it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spiced Turtle<\/a>‘s resume includes victories in races such as the Japan Classic, Ark De ComicDog, Kakarazuka Kinen Cup, Aussie Queen, Equinics, Prince of Whales and Mr. Met Cap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He won the Japan Classic twice and the Ark De ComicDog twice, while repeatedly competing in some of the richest turf races available around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His peak performances were equally spectacular. Spiced Turtle<\/a> produced SP figures in the high teens and low 120s, including a 122 in the Ark De ComicDog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He wasn’t merely durable. He wasn’t simply consistent. He was devastatingly efficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At more than $861,000 in career earnings per start, Spiced Turtle<\/a> remains the standard against which this list is measured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Bolden Bidder<\/a> – $21,001,270<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Career: 32 starts – 17 wins – 5 seconds – 2 thirds<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pedigree: Teofilo x Dynaformer x Northern Dancer<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Surface: Turf<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Routes: 32 starts, 17 wins<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Career Earnings: $21,001,270<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only one other horse on our list joined Spiced Turtle in the $20-million club.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bolden Bidder<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And he came within roughly $541,000 of the top spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bolden Bidder<\/a> was a pure turf router. Every one of his 32 career starts came on grass and around two turns, and he won 17 of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His resume reads almost like an international racing calendar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The New Zealand Darby. The Aussie Queen. The Los Angeles Turf Cup. The San Francisco Capitan Handicap. The Sand Castle Golden Turf Classic. The Japan Classic. The Ark De ComicDog. The G.P. Von Baden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that only scratches the surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bolden Bidder<\/a> traveled repeatedly and successfully, facing top-level competition across numerous international racing jurisdictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His peak was formidable. At various points he posted SP figures of 116, 117, 118, 119, 120 and 122.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thirty-two starts. Seventeen victories. More than $21 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two horses on our list reached that mountaintop. Nobody else did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Solar Song<\/a> – $16,395,800<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Career: 52 starts – 21 wins – 8 seconds – 6 thirds<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pedigree: Deputy Minister x Nureyev x Bold Ruler<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Surface: Dirt<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Routes: 50 starts, 21 wins<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Career Earnings: $16,395,800<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If Spiced Turtle represents efficiency, Solar Song<\/a> represents endurance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Solar Song<\/a> started 52 times, won 21 races and finished in the money 35 times. Almost his entire career was spent routing on dirt, where he accumulated more than $16.39 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And he kept coming back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Solar Song<\/a> won major races including the Eddie Arcaro, Sand Castle Classic, Maryland Special Handicap, Michael-Strike Stakes, CA Classic, Breeders Bowl Classic, Topicount Special and End of Summer Special.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several became repeat destinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He regularly produced SP figures between 110 and 118 during his prime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But perhaps the most impressive number is simply 52.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Solar Song<\/a> wasn’t protected by a short campaign designed to preserve a sparkling record. He showed up year after year, season after season, against serious competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And despite all those opportunities for something to go wrong, he still won more than 40% of every race he entered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is a different kind of greatness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Title Defense<\/a> – $15,792,268<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Career: 58 starts – 25 wins – 9 seconds – 7 thirds<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pedigree: Awesome Again x Kingmambo x Storm Cat<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Surface: Turf<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Turf Record: 53 starts, 24 wins<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Career Earnings: $15,792,268<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nobody among the five richest horses we found raced more often than Title Defense<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fifty-eight starts. Twenty-five victories. Forty-one finishes in the top three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That means Title Defense<\/a> hit the board in more than 70% of his career starts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And what a career it was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite a pedigree containing Awesome Again and Storm Cat, Title Defense<\/a> became an international turf-routing star. His major victories included races such as the Sand Castle Golden Turf Classic, Queen’s Spring Cup, Kakarazuka Kinen Cup, Windy City Turf Classic, G.P. Von Baden, Canada Turf, Breeders’ Bowl Turf, Andrew Cote Japan Classic, Allied Assault Handicap, Coronation Pilsner and Greatest Show On Turf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Title Defense<\/a> didn’t build $15.79 million by finding one comfortable circuit and staying there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He traveled. A lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At his best, Title Defense<\/a> was producing SP figures of 110, 111, 112, 113, 115 and 116 against elite competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spiced Turtle had breathtaking efficiency. Title Defense<\/a> had staying power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And over 58 starts, that staying power carried him to $15,792,268.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Giant’s Kash<\/a> – $15,571,510<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Career: 26 starts – 13 wins – 4 seconds – 1 third<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pedigree: Giant’s Causeway x War Front x A.P. Indy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Surface: Dirt<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dirt Record: 25 starts, 13 wins<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Career Earnings: $15,571,510<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then there is Giant’s Kash<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Twenty-six starts. Thirteen wins. $15.57 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s almost $599,000 in career earnings every time he entered the starting gate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And Giant’s Kash<\/a> did his damage almost exclusively on dirt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He developed into a major 3-year-old with victories in races such as the Florida Derby – Derby Lock Prep, Bluegrass Derby, Eddie Haskell Stakes and Travelers Stakes before taking his ability into open-age competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then came races including the Breeders’ Bowl Classic, Japan Dirt Cup, Sand Castle Classic, Movieland Shiny Cup, Equinics – Great Barrier Reef and Jockey Guild Gold Cup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His peak SP figures tell the same story: 115. 119. 119. 118. 114. 121.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That 121 SP in the 2020 Equinics stands out even among the performances of the horses on this list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Giant’s Kash<\/a> won exactly half his career starts and reached $15.57 million in almost exactly half as many races as Solar Song needed to reach $16.4 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Different path. Same destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the richest horses we’ve uncovered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The $10 Million Club<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Those five sit atop our list, but they aren’t alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Behind them is an exclusive collection of Derby Fever runners who accomplished something Pretzel Wands’ sale suddenly makes very relevant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They earned more than her entire $7.88-million purchase price – and then kept going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a game that has been online since 1998, that’s a pretty exclusive neighborhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chase Isn’t Over<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

History isn’t finished, either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are active horses moving toward that $10-million threshold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Big Ron<\/a> ($9,698,086) is knocking loudly on the door, leaving him only about $302,000 from membership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Modern War Tactics<\/a> ($7,860,960) is especially interesting considering that his entire career earnings are almost exactly what someone just paid for Pretzel Wands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She’s Dangerous<\/a> ($7,594,655) remains another active horse within striking distance of the threshold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

John Stamos<\/a> ($7,228,880) is another active name worth following.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chinoe<\/a> ($6,696,090) is also worth watching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

War Echoes<\/a> ($6,212,920) rounds out another notable active earner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The historical leaderboard isn’t frozen. There are still horses trying to rewrite it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So… Was $7.88 Million Too Much?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

That’s the question everybody gets to answer for themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But history gives us some perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pretzel Wands doesn’t merely have to become a very good horse to earn $7.88 million on the racetrack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She would have to become exceptional.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

She would need to approach territory occupied by some of the greatest earners Derby Fever has produced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And even then, consider the mathematics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spiced Turtle earned $21.54 million in only 25 starts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Solar Song raced 52 times to earn $16.4 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Title Defense raced 58 times to earn $15.79 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those are extraordinary careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which might be the real lesson from the Pretzel Wands auction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe nobody pays $7.88 million expecting to make the money back one purse at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe at that level, you’re buying something else – the horse, the pedigree, future breeding possibilities, prestige, competition, or simply the opportunity to own something you badly wanted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because the records we found prove that a horse can earn $7.88 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They also show just how difficult that is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seventeen horses on our list reached $10 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Five exceeded $15 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two crossed $20 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And at $21,541,974, Spiced Turtle sits atop the group we found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pretzel Wands now has a $7.88-million price tag attached to her name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether that eventually looks outrageous, brilliant, or simply the price someone was willing to pay for a horse they wanted?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
