Well its 2010 and its that time of year again. A new bunch of 3yo\u2019s pursue the long road to the classics and although not as glorified as the Road to the Derby, the Road to the Oaks is just as exciting. This week sees the running of the Grade III Santa Jezebel Stakes at California. It\u2019s a race for 3yo Fillies over 8.5 furlongs on Dirt. You could consider the big 2yo races of the last 6 months as Oaks preps but the Santa Jezebel is the first big race of the season for 3yo Fillies and is really the first race in the Road to the Bluegrass Oaks in Kentucky. It has served as a big lead up not to the Oaks but the main races before the Oaks. I myself used this race as a Oaks Prep for one of my filly\u2019s who unfortunately couldn\u2019t stay but the first couple that beat her all went on to better things including the Oaks. Let\u2019s get to this impressive field of fillies\u2026.<\/p>\n
Forty Coins is the runner for the jokersaces barn and is a 3yo Filly by Western Winter out of a Ghostzapper mare. Interestingly I\u2019m not sure Ghostzapper is Dam Sire for many horses yet so this I presume could be one of his first but maybe not. Forty Coins did try Graded Stakes three starts back finishing fourth and was gradually closing on the winner. Comes into this race with a Stakes second and Allowance win that puts her with a decent chance in this race. Graded Stakes experience is a big plus for this filly and I expect her to be somewhere in the finish.<\/p>\n
Number two is Men A Soda Bread from the cmdstables. This daughter of Demidoff has an unusual race record of nine starts, one win and seven seconds with earnings over $100,000. Men A Soda Bread competed in Minnesota\u2019s Last Man Standing Contest where she finished second. Since then she has struggled in Allowances but is trying dirt for the first time. Don\u2019t know why a Grade III was chosen for her dirt debut but I can\u2019t rate her here.<\/p>\n
Out of three is El Lucero from the zyro barn at 18\/1. El Lucero\u2019s pedigree is Lawman x Forty Niner x Zilzal and is a winner of two races from seven starts. This filly won her first two starts on dirt before running last in a small Grade II Field last time out. Was going nicely but after her last start she is also hard to rate in this race. <\/p>\n
Shakespeare Prayer is the entry from the PazJazz stables and is by Marcus Andronicus with a backline of Fappiano x Deputy Minister. This filly has won three races from nine starts with earnings over $100,000. Shakespeare Prayer has had three starts in Dirt Routes for two wins and a second all in her last three starts. Last time out she ran a career best 92 speed figure while winning an Allowance by \u00bc length. She likes to sit midfield and use her turn of foot to run down the others but it may be a bit harder in this race. Like many in this field, she has no Stakes Race experience but will appreciate the 8.5 furlongs.<\/p>\n
Jumping from barrier five at 9\/1 is Mothers Intuition for stable avondalea. Mothers Intuition is by Eddington with an impressive backline of Forty Niner x Sadler\u2019s Wells. Two starts back in her Graded Stakes debut she finished midfield before an impressive 1 \u00bd length Stakes victory last start with a 91 speed figure. She has never ran further than 7.5 furlongs but she has been appreciating the extra distance every race. I think she will further improve with the extra furlong and puts her right in this race as a top chance.<\/p>\n
Just Got Paid runs for the mtk76 stables and her pedigree is Strike The Gold x Gone West x Seattle Slew. She has had 5 starts for 3 wins and a second with earnings over $500,000. She was unbeaten in her first two starts before an impressive closing second in the G1 Getaway Stakes. She failed in the G1 Darley before a great run to win the Juvenile Fillies Dirt race on the Blazing Saddles Championship Day. You need good form to win races like this and that\u2019s exactly what Just Got Paid has. She has ran second in a Grade II and is a last start Stakes Winner at the distance. This lightly raced filly has a bright future ahead likely starting in this race.<\/p>\n
Aegean Sea runs for magoo\u2019s silks2912 barn and is by Tale Of The Cat. Six starts for three wins for this filly who has a three races winning streak going at the moment. This filly has been getting better with extra distance which has been shown by the three race winning streak. She has won Allowances in her last two starts all by further than two lengths and both at a Mile in distance. Definitely looking for more distance but the ability of this filly is questionable but only time will tell.<\/p>\n
Kepler Lororolo has been drawn in Post number 8 with M Billig aboard at 10\/1. This filly is by Red Ransom in his last simulated crop. She couldn\u2019t get a win in her first three starts but since then has been on a hot streak with three straight victories coming into this race. Her most impressive run was last start with a 2 length Allowance win in the slop over a mile. Since hitting 7.5 furlongs she has been undefeated and although she has never run in a Stakes she will really love the distance which is a massive advantage. <\/p>\n
Short Long is by Cahill Road with the backline of Slewpy x Mr. Prospector. Despite the average pedigree this filly has been gifted with some ability for trainer onthemusol and has had 9 starts for 3 wins and over $225,000 in earnings. Her form has been pretty inconsistent but back in September she won a Grade I Stakes over this distance which is the sort of form you need. Since then though she hasn\u2019t really gone on with the job, with average runs in the Breeders Bowl and a Delpenn Owner Restricted Race. If she can pull out a run like the one in the G1 Walnut Tree Stakes she will win this but I have a feeling she peaked at 2.<\/p>\n
Number ten for the bertaal2 barn is Counterfeit CC with M Staples aboard at 7\/1. Now this blueblood is a real impressive sort ranked #36 in the 3yo Filly Dirt Route Division. I am loving her pedigree of Awesome Again x A.P. Indy x Danzig which seems a 100% chance of success to me. She has had four starts on dirt for a Stakes Win and a Graded Placing two starts back. Last time out she tried turf in a Grade III where she went alright but not great. She has great form but low speed figures are a bit worrying. She will have to improve to win this but she can\u2019t be dismissed.<\/p>\n
Stable crandyiii\u2019s entry for the Santa Jezebel Stakes is Smarty Joan, obviously by Champion 3yo Smarty Jones with an impeccable backline of Seattle Slew x Danzig. This filly has won twice in her 8 start career most of which in Allowance races. Smarty Joan ran third in a Stakes on debut but couldn\u2019t break her maiden until her 4th start. It took another four starts to win in Allowance company which was last start with a 91 speed figure. Has had 1 win and 2 seconds from 3 starts at a mile and it does look like she will appreciate the extra half furlong here. She has ability but stepping up in grade I think she may struggle but might be better off a little further than this.<\/p>\n
The Super stables are no strangers to the big races and their entry for this race is Not Quite Evil who is by Tiznow with an impressive backline of Nureyev x Raise A Native. Her first two starts including her winning debut were on turf where she showed small amounts of ability. In her last start she was switched to the Dirt for the first time in a NW2L Allowance where she went Wire To Wire to win with an 89 Speed Figure. She definitely has the ability to compete with this field as shown last start but having never ran in a Stakes race at all this is a mammoth task but if any stable can do it, it is the Super Conglomerate.<\/p>\n
The Kauffmac3 barn enters the #28 ranked horse in the 3yo Filly Dirt Route Division who is named Tizkauf by Tiz Wonderful out of a Dehere mare with earnings over $100,000. She showed promising during her early sprint races but really impressed when she finally got over a mile. She ran second in a Grade III before failing in a Grade I. Last start was a awesome run by this filly, coming second in the Grade III Mistaken Soda Identity Stakes over 8.5 furlongs. Even though running second in a Grade III isn\u2019t that impressive it is the way she did it. She settled second last 13 lengths off the leader and when the speed went on she was still 9 lengths away but an amazing burst of speed launched her into second place falling just 2 \u00be lengths short to Taylor\u2019s Story. This filly has serious ability and will be hard to beat here.<\/p>\n
From the outside is Beach Towel for sjfarms with jockey T Bates at the odds of 7\/1. Beach Towel is by More Than Ready with the backline of Machiavellian x Never Bend and has a record of seven starts, four wins, two seconds and earnings over $170,000. Was only okay in sprints but once she got to 7 furlongs she started winning. She has now won three in a row after a last time out Stakes Win over a mile and one sixteenth. In that race she improved out of sight with a 97 speed figure which is huge. After her last start she has to be one of the main contenders for this race and the Oaks trials.<\/p>\n
