Sons of Storm Cat, Gone West, Danzig and Seattle Slew were all the rage, especially when combined with sons of Bold Ruler, Mr. Prospector, Buckpasser, etc. One to hit the big time was a filly named Charlie’s Tiger, a bargain bred daughter by Lord Tiger. As a 2yo, she beat the boys in a stakes; at three, she went on to win Equinics gold. It is fitting, that in the first three runnings of the Charlie’s Tiger, a filly has won the race every time. A baker’s dozen of runners is set to go postward, with several fillies hoping to keep the streak alive, and the colts aiming to finally turn the tables.

The heavy favorite, at 9/5 odds, is mooloolaba’s Rewa Dreamin. The husky grey daughter of Woke Up Dreaming sports four wins from six trips to the track, including a victory last time out in the Ginger Ale Stakes. To date, she has dominated the bargain bred division, but also finished second in open company with a 86 SF, racehorse time no matter what your pedigree. The distance should suit, the speed figures are classy, and she’s got one of the leading riders aboard. If she brings her “A” game, it’s going to be a tough day for the others.

The best hope for the boys is Rubber Matt, a leggy chestnut son of Twining. His breeder, jockfan, watch the colt make a game closing charge to win by a nose in his debut, with a 70 SF. Jockfan put the colt up for sale after that performance, and current owner david37373 ended up the winning bidder, paying just over $1.5 million for the juvenile. So far, that hasn’t looked like a bad purchase price. The colt remained unbeaten in his second start, taking an unrestricted allowance with an 83 SF, then fell just short last time out with an 81 SF while finishing a closing second. The distance should suit, and it wouldn’t take much improvement for this guy to present a real problem for the favorite and keep her on her toes. Olsen rides.

There are several other winners in this field. Wonnaby Fang is another filly in the field with a chance, and is named for her trainer/breeder wonnaby. The seal brown daughter of Storm Fang is an eye catcher, as she’s got plenty of chrome on her. She’s got some speed to go with that flash, too, as she broke her maiden last time out going Saturday’s distance with a solid 77 SF. Another step forward is entirely possible for this lightly raced miss. Safimport’s homebred Lecture Robin won at first asking with a 68 SF in a bb maiden, then was fourth behind Rewa Dreamin last out. I suspect this guy is going to want longer at a mile, not shorter, so keep an eye on him for next year’s BB Derby or Classic. Not sure of his chances in a sprint, but he is a nice colt. CT’s Rocket campaigns for owner/breeder lifeline, and has competed on both turf and dirt. The son of Governor Brown looks like he’ll ultimately be best going a route of ground, and would need to put in a career best to threaten some of the favorites in this sprint. Like Lecture Robin, keep an eye out for him next year.

Several other entrants have been a bit unlucky to date, and have been knocking on the door. Saturday would be a great day to turn things around. A prime example of this is Textbook Case, who has finished second in all three of his starts. The handsome chestnut son of Freud turned in his best effort to date when finishing second to Rewa Dreamin last time out, yielding only in the final 1/16th after setting the early pace. His 81 SF stands up well, and the slightly shorter distance should play in his favor. Lots to like about this guy, and may be the value play at 5/1. Viento’s Secret Award just needs to harness her speed a little. In both of her starts, the Desert Secret filly has shot out to the lead, only to falter in the stretch. Last time out she faded to third behind Wonnaby Fang, posting a 70 SF in the process. The second half of safimport’s entry is Golden Mogok, a lanky chestnut daughter of the Storm Cat stallion, Mogok. She was third in her debut, then off the board, both times behind Wonnaby Fang. I would be interested to see how she does on turf, with that Storm Cat and Thatching blood in her pedigree, and she runs like she might be more of a router. Would have to run a career best in order to challenge the favorites, but when you’ve only raced twice, it’s entirely possible for a 2yo to put things together and step up their game.

One horse is making his career debut, so your guess is as good as mine as to how he’ll do. Over Daaheere goes postward at 49/1, and is a son of Daaher, a grade 1 winning son of Awesome Again. The brown colt is bred and trained by lgbost9b, so it might be worth making a bet, based on the size of the potential payoff.

Rounding out the field are several horses who have yet to hit the board. Lasting makes his first start for trainer planobrgn2, after being claimed for $5,000 last time out. The leggy son of El Provinciano has yet to hit the board in three starts to date, but his running style suggests he may be better at three going a long distance of ground. Five Lucky Stars didn’t show much in his career debut, finishing a dull seventh at this distance, but trainer/breeder phillysun2 is tossing that performance out. Deputy Wildcat has gotten his share of winners, so if you side with his connections for a much improved performance and the colt proves you right, it’ll be a 59/1 payday. The second half of lifeline’s entry, CT’s Loft has shown little in four starts, and would be somewhat of a surprise if she hit the board here, although she does seem to be better on the main track than turf. Lifeline has a third entrant, through the lifeline1 stable in CT’s Sex Appeal. The son of Roman Saddle has yet to hit the board in four starts, and again, would be a bit of a surprise if this spot was the one where things changed, although with 2yos, anything is possible.

Good luck to all the competitors and their connections!

[2

post-7540","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-previews
["GET
