Besides the obvious story that the winner here gets an automatic bid to the Bluegrass Derby we have lots of sub plots. It\u2019s funny, this time of year you have a lot of top ranked horses that flourished as two year olds only to start fading a bit as a three year old. There are also others that were just okay on the two year old campaign but are really hitting their stride right now. The latter group probably doesn\u2019t have enough Stakes points to get into the Bluegrass Derby so these races are huge for them. Most of the higher ranked colts ended up going to the Florida Derby so they didn\u2019t have to cross the Atlantic but we have some real up and comers here and I wouldn\u2019t be surprised if a couple of the horses in this race end up on the board at the Bluegrass Derby. One way or another we have four co-favorites according to the Morning Line and it should be a really great race with lots of contenders so let\u2019s take a look:<\/font><\/p>\n

He has one Stakes win and some solid SPFs but still hasn\u2019t hit that triple digit SPF or challenged in a Graded. He has Stivers in the saddle and he is one of the best and may be able to wring the best out of this colt. He likes to close from the back end and may run into some traffic from this post position. <\/p>\n

He\u2019s really been showing nice improvement for trainer LDStable of the Fab Farms conglomerate. He\u2019s had nice jumps in his SPFs especially since last fall. His best races have been at short of a mile though and you have to wonder if this is a stretch for him. He is mounted by jockey Lakencher and he has been solid if unspectacular. All in all, this could be a break out race but it is more likely just added experience. <\/p>\n

After contending but not really showing anything special, he recently threw a couple of 90+ SPFs around and looks to be maturing by leaps and bounds lately for trainer Oxymoron3. Whether he can continue that jump and contend here remains to be seen but with Bangs holding the reins in his magic hands, anything can happen. It would look good on your ticket to have this if he hits. <\/p>\n

He hit his maiden then finished on the board in four consecutive Stakes races. Last time out he had a quick 101 SPF at 8 \u00bd furlongs. He just missed the win but closed strong and looks to be ready to step up to this level. He is more of a stalker and should like this post and one of the trio of Harzheim brothers in this race will guide him to a strong finish. He could definitely be in the mix at the end of this race. <\/p>\n

He had a sizzling 105 SPF in that race and won easily, even easing up a bit at the end. The only worry is that this win streak has all been in Sprint races and he tired in his couple of races at a mile or more. He is a big time front runner and it is hard to hold that lead against this caliber of competition if you are tiring. Loesch is in the irons, one of my favorite jocks in the game and he will try and pace this colt to get the most out of him but I\u2019m not quite sure that he has it to give. <\/p>\n

He has shown really nice improvement for trainer TripWire since the end of last fall and has consistently thrown some nice SPFs including a nice 101 last time out where he finished third in the FELIPE ALOU G2. Add to that the fact that they have Ledwith in the leather and he is sporting an amazing 30% win percentage this year. It is only March and he already has 83 wins this year! His addition on this stalker could be the difference in this race. The Given Stables would love a trip to the Derby. <\/p>\n

( PULPIT x SILVER DEPUTY x SEEKING THE GOLD out PAY N PLAY) This is the only colt in either of the Lock races this weekend that raced in the Louisiana Derby Lock which was more of a mud wrestling tournament than a horse race. He still threw a 98 SPF and a fifth place finish but trainer GrantP and the JPritchett Stables had to be disappointed with the conditions as this horse has been looking good all year. That Lock mudfest was the only time this colt hasn\u2019t hit the board and he had just run a 100 SPF in the race previous. He should have enough rest since then and with a nice bounce back could be a big time contender here with Day in the saddle. With a ranking of 100 he probably needs the win to get into the Derby. <\/p>\n

He has possibilities and it certainly won\u2019t hurt having the steadying hand of the other Ledwith on the reins but this colt is going to have to have a blow out race to be a contender here. Trainer James22 has brought him along nicely but he may need a bit more maturing to compete against this crowd. <\/p>\n

( RELAXED GESTURE (IRE) x JOYEUX DANSEUR x MT. LIVERMORE out of OPERA) I\u2019m not exactly sure how this colt got a Czech tag with an Irish Sire but it actually looks pretty cool with his name. Graywolf has horses in both ends of the Lock races this weekend and SCAT BRUSH<\/b> in Florida may have the best chance of the two. Although contending and throwing some solid SPFs around this year all of his wins were last year and there are none since October. Add to that the fact that with all of the incredible jockeys in this race Ayso is on the back of this horse and his normally solid 11% win percentage has been cut in half this year with only four wins to his credit. Perhaps the fourteen years in the saddle are catching up to him. <\/p>\n

Don\u2019t get me wrong, he finished fourth in last years Breeders Bowl at a mile and has G3 win at the same distance but he just hasn\u2019t shown the same level of improvement at the longer distances. He had a good layoff at the beginning of the year and ran his only race of the year on Valentine\u2019s day in Vermont with disappointing results. Trainer OnTarget is hoping for a big bounce here but with another big layoff I\u2019d be surprised to see it here. Small is the jockey and he is one of the best, perhaps he can turn this colt around. <\/p>\n

This is a colt with a deep closing style that could possibly slip into the Bluegrass with a win here at generous Morning Line odds. <\/p>\n

We saw it happen a couple of times last year in Lock races where inexperience youngsters grabbed Lock races to move into the Derby. It could happen again here. Cassell is in the saddle and he has been solid so far this year. This colt has run mostly against small fields and I hope he isn\u2019t overwhelmed here. <\/p>\n

I assume that Desimster1 was a basket case after that last race trying to figure out what happened to this colt. If he can bounce back from that poor performance he could jump up to the role of contender here. It should help having one of the Harzheim brothers on his back as he is winning about a third of his races. If he can get this colt back on track it could spell trouble for the rest of the field. <\/p>\n

That last race was a rocket fast 107 SPF the fastest speed in either lock race this weekend. There are still some questions as to whether he can run farther than a mile but I think that trainer PolandFarm has brought him along just right and he has plenty left to show. They have the third Harzheim brother in the saddle and they are all champions. He should be able to pace this colt with his late closing style and I think you are looking at the next addition to the Bluegrass Derby with a win here. <\/p>\n

I am really excited about watching this race. I think that it will be closely contested and there are a couple of long shots that could come out of nowhere and surprise everyone. I like one of those double digit long shots, JEEPSTER <\/b> to finish fourth although he may finish much better. I would like to see him with another race under his belt but he could break out here. SILVER TONGUED <\/b> is back on dry land and would love a win here and I think he has enough to finish in the top three but not sure he will get to the top. THUNDER DRAGON <\/b> is getting some play here and deservedly so but I\u2019m afraid that he may end up a disappointing second best. That is because I believe that GHOSTGOLD <\/b> is ready to make his move and join the big time three year olds. He really impressed me last time out and I think he can do it again.<\/p>\n
