Any sane owner and trainer cannot miss this week, heck, there’s even a Derby lock race going on here. So, as all eyes turn to Florida this week, some of them will no doubt be focused on the “Pan Americana Handicap”, 12 furlongs on the firm turf, for all horses 4 years old and up. A field of 12 will be vying for their share of the 150K purse, and as I mentioned in my other article, it IS J Nason Bobble Head day. The weather is supposed to be beautiful, and this is the kind of weekend racing aficionados dream of, so there is no excuse not to get out to the track this weekend (I promise I won’t make anymore Surf and Turf references, well, OK, just that one, really, I promise). Alright, without further ado, let’s break down this exciting field for ya.

Our early morning line favorite, going off at 7/2, and coming from the 4 hole, is Matisyahu (KY), out of Tiznow x Le Fabuleux x Bold Bidder. This 5 year old horse has earned over 500K in his lifetime, but seemed destined for a rather mediocre career on dirt until he was picked up by stable Gtest. His new owners saw something in him that screamed turf, and once on it, he has never looked back. His record on turf is an astounding 15 firsts and 5 seconds in just 21 races! As a matter of fact, he is coming off an absolutely amazing 7 wins in his last 8 starts. However, this will be his first try at any Graded Stakes races, but you know how I like to say never bet against this kinda record, and this guy is the favorite….ouch. Looks like Buster’s Upset Special record is in for a beating today. He has posted big Beyers numbers in his last 2 starts, and I’m sure will need to continue that success here today. His most successful trips have him dueling for the early lead, so look for him to run from the front today.

Behind him, at 4-1, and starting in position 7, is Lemon Cream Pie (KY), out of (you guessed it) Lemon Drop Kid x Stage Door Johnny x Creme Dela Creme. This 5 year old homebred horse has earned over 400K lifetime for stable Domenicr1, and comes into today’s race having won 3 races in a row. He is a Graded Stakes winner, although he does not have tons of experience at this level, and he has put up some great numbers in his career. He does seem to have a bit of a problem with consistency, but this might be due to the fields he has faced, we will have to see. So far he is undefeated in 2009, having won all of his starts rather handily. This will be his first run out to this distance this year, however, I don’t foresee that being a big problem for him. He seems most comfortable running from the middle of the pack, so look for him to lay off in the early going, and save himself for a big push down the stretch.

Right behind him, going off at 5-1, and coming out of the 5 spot, is Dutch Harbor (JPN), out of Lamtarra x Theatrical (IRE) x Alleged. This 5 year old has earned over 400K for his stable Runninfast, and after a slow start to his career (he did not break his maiden until midway through his 3 year old campaign), and a switch to dirt for a race, he really seemed to find himself after his return to turf. His game Dam is Pretty Irish Girl (IRE). This 9 year old retired mare has 3 offspring, all of whom are winners, although Dutch Harbor is the most successful of them all, at least so far. He has definitely put up the numbers to threaten in this company, although he will have to rebound from his last effort, a disappointing 6th of 6 in “The Greek Spring Handicap”, in which he never figured at all. If he can get back to form, the other horses might find him a “most dangerous catch” indeed. He likes to close from fairly deep, so I would look for him to go straight to the back, saving his best for the stretch run.

Behind him, going off at 7-1, and coming out of the 2 hole, is Lierganes (IRE), out of Fasliyev x Sadler’s Wells x Rahy. This 4 year old colt is trained by stable Triska, and has earned over 100K in his short career. His game Dam is Rocio who earned over 100K herself, and has produced 2 foals, both winners. Lierganes is the younger, and so far, more successful of the 2. This will be his first start at the Graded Stakes level, indeed he has never even raced in a regular Stakes race. Despite that, he is coming off 3 wins in his last 4 starts, all 3 wire to wire wins, and can certainly get this distance. If he continues to improve, as he has nearly every single race, there is no reason why he shouldn’t figure in the finish here. He is most certainly a rabbit, and will look to get out fast and push the pace today.

Behind him, at 8-1, and coming out of the 9 hole, is Confederacy (IRE), out of High Chaparral (IRE) x Caerleon x Conquistador Cielo. This 7 year old homebred horse has earned over 3 million in a career that has spanned 47 races for his stable Dawgpound. His game Dam is Con Unit who earned over a million herself while racing, and since retiring, has sired 6 foals, 2 of which are Graded Stakes winners. Confederacy has not won yet in his 2009 season and will certainly look to change that here. During his career, he has put up great BSF numbers, but not really on a consistent basis, so we will have to see which one shows up here, when Confederacy is on, he can be a world beater! He also likes to go out fast, and indeed his success seems to hinge on it, so we will have to see if he can get a good break here today.

Behind him are 2 horses, both going off at 9-1. His game Dam is Fourandahalfstars (IRE) who earned over 100K herself while racing, and has 3 foals, all winners. Three Votes is making his second try at cracking the Graded Stakes level, and has continued to improve in every start. He is also seeking his first win in 2009, but he had a great string of 5 wins in 6 starts in 2008, so his backers are hoping to see a return to that form here today. In his last start, he posted his best BSF ever, but had to settle for second as he just could not get up on the winning horse. He seems most comfortable laying back, and allowing the lead horses to tire, before making his move in the stretch.

The other horse at 9-1 is starting right next to him in the 12 hole, and is Dirty Weekend (JPN), out of Alkaased x Aljabr x Dynaformer. This 7 year old retired mare herself earned over 300K in her career, although to date neither of her 2 offspring has been able to match that. Dirty Weekend is also trying to crack the Graded Stakes level again, and is coming off 6 wins in his last 8 starts, although he did not win either of his last 2 starts. He has continued to improve in his career, and he has put up the BSF to hang here, but I wonder if he is still a little too young for this challenge. We will have to see how he handles himself today. Look for him to stalk just off the pace and make his move down the stretch.

Behind them are 2 horses, both going off at 12-1. Cozzene Affaire has put up some solid numbers over his career, but I am not sure he can get up in this company. His best BSF was fairly recent, in the Grade III “Buck Dharma Handicap”, but he will definitely have to return to that form to figure in this finish. He has earned over 200K lifetime, with 7 wins in 42 starts. He is certainly capable of putting up the BSF to win this race, but those times have been few and far between. He is coming off a disappointing finish in his last start, the “Royal Calm Stakes”, and his last few wins have come at the allowance level. His game Dam is Barb’s Espresso. This 7 year old retired mare has just the one offspring. Barb’s Victorian looks to be a bit of a late bloomer, as he has really improved recently. Despite that, he has really never put up the numbers to figure in today’s race, so he will have to have to race of a lifetime here today. He is coming off a win in his last start, so he will look to build on that success. He is a bit of a late closer, so he will lay off the pace early, and look to make a stretch run.

Behind him, at 19-1, and coming out of the 6 hole, is California Loop (JPN), out of Moon Ballad (IRE) x Our Emblem x Troy (GB). He has recently put up the BSF to hang in this company, and if not for his inexperience, would certainly go off at better odds. He has continually improved in his starts, and if he can get more improvement here, could be a force to be reckoned with in this race. He likes to run from the front, and so will look to join the early speed duel here.

This brings us to our final horse, going off at 59-1 and coming out of the 8 hole, is Dreaming Eyes (IRE), out of Black Sam Bellamy (IRE) x Law Society (IRE) x Dash For Cash. This 6 year old horse has bounced around a bit, finally ending up with his fourth stable, Winnett.
