Now I live in Kentucky, and I have to tell you, we do NOT leave ladies OR bourbon just laying around, so I had to pick these sweet ladies up, doncha see? Now, I live in Louisville, so this requires me to pack up quick, hit I64 east through Lexington, and head into the Appalachians. OK, no problem, uh, where is my copy of “Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas”? OK, let’s load up on some of the suggested “supplies”, it’s gonna be another allnighter, folks. Fortunately, the weather is supposed to be beautiful, and really, I shoudda been going anyway to pick up my K Chesterman Bobble Head (I just love these giveaways, don’t you?). Well, alright, everybody got everything? Hang on tight, it’s gonna be a bumpy ride….

The morning line favorite, going off at 5/2, is a 3 year old mare named Poison Arrow (KY), out of Bluegrass Cat x Machiavellian x Caerleon, running from the 7 slot. This little lady has 4 wins in just 8 starts for her stable Kevoman5, and 7 of these starts have been Stakes races. She has competed at the Graded level twice before, but has won neither of those outings. Despite that, she has brought home nearly 150K, and her last outing was a dominating win where she posted her best Beyer ever at “The Stormy Project Stakes”. She really looks to be the class of this race, although there is a tight group of horses in this race, and she will need to continue the form she showed last race to win here. Look for her to stalk the pace and make a run down the stretch.

Right behind her, going off at 4-1, is Ex Warrior (KY), out of A.P. Warrior x Exchange Rate x Alzao, starting in the 3 position. This 3 year old mare is trained by stable Gowand4 and her game Dam is Dancer Exchange. This 8 year old mare is new to breeding, having produced just 2 foals so far, however, in her career as a racer she brought home almost 200K herself, making her the breadwinner of the family so far, although Ex Warrior looks on pace to out earn her mama pretty soon. Ex Warrior has also competed but never won at the Graded Stakes level, however, it looks like her last outing is what prompted her backers to decide that she was ready to try to move up again. She won “The Bearly Top Memorial” pulling away at the finish, and also posting her best Beyer ever. Look for her to run fairly close to Poison Arrow and look to duel her down the stretch.

Right behind Ex Warrior, going off at 9/2, and coming out of the 1 hole, is Diabolu’s Paciscor (KY), out of Rahy x Sadler’s Wells x Mr. Prospector, running for stable Babycolt. This 3 year old mare’s game Dam is Indescribable (IRE), who had a decent career, earning over 100K before retiring to the breeding shed. Diabolu’s Paciscor is her first foal, and has earned over 200K in just 6 races! As a matter of fact, Diabolu’s Paciscor has never finished worse than second in ANY race. This gal knows how to be there in the mix at the finish. She is also coming off a win in the Grade II “Los Vinegrette Stakes”, so this is actually a drop in class for her. Look for her to hang back at the beginning, saving her best for the stretch run.

Close behind her, going off at 5-1, and coming out of the 6 position, is Adoring Public (AUS), out of Redoute’s Choice (AUS) x Aldebaran x El Prado (IRE). She is trained by stable Quagmire, and her “step-papa” is Al Prado, who earned over 400K in 32 starts before retiring to stud. Ahhh, that I should be so lucky… This young lady has not had a win yet in her 2009 season, although she has had some strong showings. She has already won over 100K in just 9 starts, and has not finished worse than 4th until her last start. This was an odd race for her, as she fired rather late and never really challenged. She will certainly try to rebound here. Look for her to hang waaaayyy back and start her run in the final turn.

Behind her, coming out of the 8 hole, and going off at 7-1, is Turn To Stone (KY), out of Giant’s Causeway (IRE) x Forty Niner x Damascus. This mare has earned almost 100K for her stable, Checkmate2, and has finished on the board in 5 of her 6 lifetime races, the only exception being last race, where she proved that she did NOT like the off track. Fortunately, that will not be a concern for her today. She already has a win here in 2009, celebrating the new year with a win going away at the allowance level, however, she does not yet have a win at the Stakes level, so we will see if she is up for the challenge today. She is the first real rabbit we have seen in the race so far, so it looks like she will be setting the pace for today’s race.

Next we have, going off at 11-1, and starting in the 2 position, Brewtal Hit (KY), out of Discreet Cat x Danzig x Mr. Prospector. I love the name, and I really love the pedigree here. She is trained by stable Sarava02, and her game Dam is Miss Brewtality. Miss Brewtality earned over 200K in 27 starts before retiring and producing 3 foals, all of whom are winners, including one Stakes winner. Brewtal Hit will look to join her half-brother as a Stakes winner here today. She went gate to wire in her last start, although that was only at the allowance level, and of the horses here today she probably has the least experience at this level, but I dunno, something about her… Anyway, look for her to duel with Turn To Stone for the early lead.

Next we have 2 mares, both going off at 14-1. The first, coming out of the 4 position, is Quick Take (KY), out of Unbridled’s Song x Giant’s Causeway x A.P. Indy. This is another nice pedigree here. She is trained by stable Super16, and her game Dam is Grand Causeway (IRE). Grand Causeway was herself a Stakes winner, although she never cracked the Graded Stakes level and Quick Take is her only foal to date. Quick Take has continued to improve each race since breaking her maiden first time out, but she will need to get a big jump here to hang in this company. Her pedigree says yes, but not exactly when, so we will have to see if she can bring it today. She is another front runner, so she will look to get a quick break from the gate.

The other mare at 14-1, and starting from the 10 position (with Mr. Bobble Head himself, K Chesterman, aboard), is Dig Up (KY), out of Forestry x Mujtahid x King’s Bishop. She has earned over 50K in 8 starts for stable Goody5, and has been particularly good on the dirt, finishing on the board in 5 of 6 starts. Her game Dam is Ralph’s Diggers who has 3 foals, all winners. Dig Up is dropping back from her last start in the Grade I “Sweet Nanette Stakes” in which she never really figured at all. She seemed to stumble a bit coming out of the gate, and never really recovered, finishing 9th. She did, however, post her lifetime best Beyer in that race, so she will look to build on that here today. She will look to stalk the pace, not too far back, and make a run for it down the stretch.

Right behind her at 15-1, and indeed right next to her, in the 9 hole, is Supersymmetry (KY), out of Harlan’s Holiday x Runaway Groom x Turn-To (wow, a horse out of Turn-To, cool). This 3 year old homebred light Grey mare runs out of stable Newmarket1 and has earned almost 75K in just 7 starts, never finishing worse than second. Her last start was her first run at this distance, and she posted her best Beyer ever, perhaps prompting Newmarket1 to feel they have found the distance for her. I would say she will need to get comfortable pretty fast to hang on in this company. Despite having never put up the numbers to compete here, she has steadily improved every race, and certainly knows how to be in the mix at the finish. She likes to go out fast and stay up front, so we will have to see how she breaks here.

Last but not least, going off at 18-1 and coming from the 5 hole, is The Shakes (KY), out of Shakespeare x Vindication x Fusaichi Pegasus. She is trained by stable Lgbost9x, and her game Dam is V Fund. The Shakes is her only foal thus far (like that thus? Shakespeare, baby!) and she still has a bit of work to join mama as a stakes winner. She seems equally comfortable on turf or dirt, although both her wins have come on dirt, and she does have some experience at the Stakes level, although she did not win either start there. She is making a big leap here to Graded Stakes, and she will definitely have to show something new here to have a chance today. She will look to hang mid pack or so, and make a late move down the stretch.

Well, here we are again, almost 3 am, and I think I’m through most of the bourbon and other “supplies”, but ya know what? That’s right, there’s only one thing left to do, and I betcha can guess what that is. You’re right, it’s time for Buster’s Upset Special, and maybe some of you alert readers noticed the little clue I left earlier. Yup, I like Brewtal Hit (KY) to tear up the track and bring home the trophy for Sarava02! As always, remember the Upset Special is just for fun, and is not intended to be a condemnation of any horse in the race. I wish the very best of luck to all the owners and horses in the race. Anyway it comes out, this one promises to be a real barn burner, so grab the roomies and head out to the track for “The Lady Bourbon”, a Grade III Stakes race 8 furlongs on the fast dirt for fillies and mares 3 years old. And, hey, bring some “supplies”, yeah? I’ll be lookin’ for ya. I know I just had some here…..

[2

post-7435","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-previews
["GET
