Now for the bad news. Most likely your horses are pretty bad and will never earn you sim fame and glory. It’s not like the old days when getting new horses gave you a good shot at getting a stakes horse. Now you get castoffs that no one else wanted. Sad but true. Sure you may get an unraced horse or lightly raced horse and there may be an occasional decent horse in there, I’m just saying, don’t hold your breath.

So you’ve got your horses and are all excited, but now what? How do I enter them, where do I place them, how do I watch them. Whoa! First things first. First thing you need to know is what you are trying to get from the sim? A bunch of winners of course that earn you a lot of sim cash you say? I already told you your horses are bad. So what is next? Let’s set a basic framework first.

It used to be that sim cash was considered worthless. I’m here to tell you that is still pretty much true. No longer can you earn a sim fortune betting a trifecta in a 4 horse race, but in reality you only need sim cash in two instances. One is as a new owner and the other is to purchase a multi-million dollar horse out of the auction. Trust me, you are not quite ready for that yet, but you do need money for travel and for claiming horses or cheap auction horses.

So if money is worthless then what is my goal? The obvious goal for most is to have a consistent graded stakes winner that everyone oohs and ahhs over and can read about in the sim newspaper the Black Type Bugler. Breeding is where many players go to attain their stakes horses and it is really the only way I know of, other than getting lucky with a claim that someone gave up on too early. Earn those breeding points as a new stable and you too can enter the world of sim breeding. Buying credits is a great way to start with breeding too, but there is a certain satisfaction in earning the breeding points through races. That said, I would not reccommend breeding right away until you get a feel for the sim.

OK then I’ll claim horses, you say. That is all well and good and a great idea, just realize that as a new stable you have a claiming advantage that you will never have again. My suggestion is to first learn what makes a decent sim horse, and try to claim some with real talent, perhaps even your first stakes winner 😉

Don’t give up on your initial horses too soon despite what I have said already. You may not have a stakes winner in your stable, but it is a great opportunity to learn the finer points of running claimers. That is where you win contests, earn breeding points, and get ready to breed that next Stakes winner.

Contests you say, where do I find them? Oops, sorry, forgot to mention the Residencies. There are many residencies where simsters get together based on some common interest, perhaps geographical area, and have their own message boards for advice and friendly chat, and they offer contests where you can earn credits (read breeding money here) and even prize horses bred by experienced simsters.

Back to entering your horses. If you have a horse that is running 50’s and 60SP’s and has never won a race, I would suggest you look toward low level maiden claimers. If it has won 1 race, look toward low claimers in a NW2L (non winner of two races in its lifetime). If you have an older mare with good blood lines, you probably will want to hold on to her for future breedings. If you click the sire and dam-sire names of your fictional horse on Monday and the cost is 300 or over for both, I would suggest holding the horse for later, at least until you understand the ins and outs of breeding. If you enter a claim race, you can lose your horse, so be careful if you like it, but it is highly unlikely anyone wants to claim one of your initial 5 horses so I wouldn’t worry too much.

When I first started the sim years ago, I can’t tell you how long I kept trying to run my horses in Allowance races as I became so attached and didn’t want to lose them. Trust me, that kind of sentiment will really slow down your progression to sim competence. Wait and develop an overly protective attitude to your 2yo homebred babies and one time stakes winners later 😉

OK, so give me a stable review so I know where to run my horses. Again, whoa! Most of these horses haven’t been run enough or in a constistent enough fashion for even experienced simsters to give you a real good suggestion as what to do. The best thing is to try some races at various distances and surfaces to try to hone in on what you think might work. I like to look at the past performace of a horse, see his highest speed figures. Is there a certain surface he liked better, a certain distance? That is the place to start. If he has been running in 2k claimers, then putting him in an unrestricted allowance race isn’t the thing to do. Besides looking solely at speed figures, I also like to look at finish. So what if he runs an 89SP at 6.5f dirt if he always comes in 9th when he is more often finishing in 3rd with a 78SP over 10f turf. I would say you are more likely to earn pts and money in the 10f turf race. Another tip is to see how your horse finishes relative to other horses. If he is falling back at 10f but is holding his own or closing at 7f, then maybe the 7f is a better race for him.

Certainly there are no magic speed numbers that will guarantee a win. As a rule the easiest race to win in my mind is a maiden claimer. These can be won even with 50’s and 60SP’s with proper placement. I also think that turf races can be won with slower speeds, so if your horse runs 62SP at 8f dirt and 61SP at 8f turf, then you are probably better off in the turf race, IMO. Once you break the MC race, then you progress to claimer NW2L or a restricted claimer based on the value of your horse, like *50. This means that only horses that have never won 2 races (former) or a horse that the computer values at *50 or less can run in the race. This reduces the competition and lets your poor horse run against others that are struggling just as much.

To learn much more about the intricacies (there are many) about the sim, I highly suggest reading the quick start guide and the instructions. I would also suggest looking at joining a residency that has an affiliation with a track you are interested in. Become familiar with how to use the RaceFinder (RaFi) and concentrate on finding races that are within 3bp’s. This will save your stable sim cash that you will need to travel with and more importantly to claim horses. It will also maximize the bp’s you earn when you do win. At first it may seem like the wins will never come, but believe me they will.

I know there is lots of information I am probably leaving out, but I am tired now, so I would encourage other experienced simsters out there to share the type of things you have learned from those many years in the sim that you wished you knew from the start. You know, the type of things that aren’t in the instructions 😉

Have fun and I hope this helps you get started.

     -Stlcards

You’ve got your stable!
