This is our first Lock Race of the year where the winner gets an automatic bid in the Bluegrass Derby the first Saturday in May. There are only two of the top ten 3 year olds and five of the top twenty entered so that will leave a good shot for a horse that might not otherwise qualify for the Derby to get in. The real story though is the weather. It has poured for a couple of days in a row and more rain is forecast for Saturday so it appears that we will have a run in the muck. Very few of these top colts have run in on an off track and that could really change things around and give an owner a real chance to get a Derby horse that might not have happened otherwise. I don’t thing anyone will challenge the record time turned in here last year by TRADING JACK. I got down here a few days early to head to New Orleans for some great food and a few parties so I am fat a sassy and ready to take on this fine field. A lot of hopes and dreams of trainers will be dashed or reinforced by this race and it should be a lot of fun so let’s take a look:

<PP#1>

1 – BLACK TIDE(JPN)

ODDS

STABLE

WIN%

JOCKEY

WIN%

TOP SPEED

EARNINGS

RANK

Zombie Stables

18/1

STCzzombie

13.9%

X.Turner

25 – 3 – 0 – 1 – 12%

93

$ 91,805</T>
41</T>

( RULE OF LAW x BLACK TIE AFFAIR(IRE) x PLUGGED NICKLE out of RUSTIC NOTE) After a couple of near misses at a mile in two Stakes races, trainer STCzzombie stretched this colt out to 9.5F in the Vermont G1 and things didn’t work out well at all. He is back at a more familiar distance now but hasn’t yet run over 93 SPF so he will definitely have to bump it up to compete here. Jockey Turner has made the most of limited mounts this year and he should help some. This colt likes the early lead and the inside post should help there. His last two races, both at a mile were 2nds but with quick high 90 SPFs. He is already a two time Graded winner but this will be his first race on an off track. He has Hogin in the leather and he has been really solid all year. This colt likes to be on or just off the lead and that sets up perfectly for him here. He is still looking for that first Graded win but came close last time out with a 4th place in the Thousand Islands G3. They have Sullivan holding the reins and he has been struggling a bit this year but he’s always been solid and should come back. That tune up race may have done him good and his come from behind style may work well here for trainer Londoner. Trainer TGI immediately pointed him toward this Lock race and had to think about how great it would be to watch Derby Week from inside the stables in Kentucky. He’s a bit tough to read as his last race was a big jump speed-wise and I would like to see him duplicate it before too many accolades. They have Wall in the leather and he has been making the most of his limited rides this year. Could be an interesting add on to your Tri ticket. <PP#11>

<img decoding="async" src="http://www.derbyfever.com/hr/profiles/metallinut_silks3441575617.gif "Width="75" height="120">

11 – TALKIN’ BASEBALL(KY)

ODDS

STABLE

WIN%

JOCKEY

WIN%

TOP SPEED

EARNINGS

RANK

Universal Racing Club

7/1

esagin

9.4%

Bo. He then started off this year by stretching out to 8.5F and winning fairly easily in a tune up Stakes race in January. Trainer esagin has been very careful not to over race him and one draw back is that he has had a six week layoff coming into this race. Another problem is that he has never run on an off track and there are a ton of speed horses in this race and he loves the front. Jockey Ryan is good and should be able to guide this top flight colt to a finish on the board. <PP#12>

<img decoding="async" src="http://www.derbyfever.com/hr/profiles/craterus_silks3408546583.gif"Width="75" height="120">

12 – PHOTONIC ANDRO(IND)

ODDS

STABLE

WIN%

JOCKEY

WIN%

TOP SPEED

EARNINGS

RANK

Photonic Stables

11/1

Craterus

7.6%

R.Richard

23 – 1 – 1 – 0 – 4%

98 (T)

$ 628,750</T>
48</T>

( MARCUS ANDRONICUS x APALACHEE x LE FABULEUX) An interesting entry here as his past three races have all been on the grass and he seems to have developed an affinity for it. Of course turf runners quite often make good mudders and that may be behind the strategy of trainer Craterus. This chestnut colt also ran quite well on the dirt with a second in last falls NORTH FORK G2 to show for his efforts. This could be quite and intriguing pick although I would feel better if someone other than jockey Richard were holding the reins. He has been struggling mightily this year with only one win in his pocket. This team may make a good Trifecta addition but you really have no idea what he will do. The colt doesn’t even have a clear cut running style as he has run from both the lead and the rear. It will also be the first off track running for this colt. There is just something special about him though that makes you want to choose him in this race. He seems to have that spark in his eye and would make a great story of a three year old that is maturing at just the right time. Trainer Radioguy has to be very excited about the prospects of making a trip to Kentucky in May with this guy. Jockey Rehberger is in the leather and hasn’t had a sterling season but may have to just hold on here and let the colt do the rest. <PP#14>

<img decoding="async" src="http://www.derbyfever.com/hr/profiles/qwikvett_silks3400977130.jpg"Width="75" height="120">

14 – RIPPERBEAST(KY)

ODDS

STABLE

WIN%

JOCKEY

WIN%

TOP SPEED

EARNINGS

RANK

Qwikvett Stables

9/1

Pincay

15.1%

C.Morris

44 – 4 – 6 – 6 – 9%

102

$ 377,000</T>
36</T>

( POINT GIVEN x MR. Add that to the fact that he is parked way outside on a muddy track and you can be sure that the trainer will be telling jockey Morris to make sure that this colt is paced and has something for the end of the race. He likes to come from behind and lots of times you find that these youngsters don’t like getting mud in their face for the first time. Could be a challenge for this team.

Morning Line = 11-13-3-4-5-7-9-14
Paz Picks = 4-13-11-12-9-10

With so much on the line it is a shame that the weather hasn’t cooperated but Spring in Louisiana is sometimes like that. With that in mind it makes it almost impossible to handicap a race with so many top horses that have never run in the muck. It could end up as a great big mud wrestling even. But the BTB pays me the big bucks to make my picks so here I go. I like PHOTONIC ANDRO to finish fourth just because of his switch from the turf for this off track race. He has run well on the clay too so it really makes for an intriguing choice. TALKIN’ BASEBALL could easily win this race and might be my top choice on a fast track but I worry about him here a bit but I feel he has too much talent to take off of the board so I have him third.
