I was just on vacation in Las Vegas for Christmas spending time with the grandparents. The very beginning and the very end of the racing season means slim pickins for writing topics. Plus my grandparents had no wireless so in order to go on here I had to use their crappy DSL, and the flight back to New York was canceled due to gusts and snow/ice, but that’s a whole ‘nother story.

Alright. Enough about my vacation adventures. Back to topic.

Ok, so the holidays have passed and now you might have a Christmas list full of blue-bloods. Well, maybe not everyone, but I know I do. And let’s be real here; the average newbie will never end up with all the A.P. Indy x Sadler’s Wells x Mr. Prospector (this would be the sim clone of Coaching Club American Oaks winner Music Note) and similar horses that they want. Your fantasies may take a double whammy between the slow, tedious points earning process and the current worldwide money squeeze.

So, you may have many goal horses that you’re striving for. I myself have 55. Narrow them down to a few, a top 10 or top 15 is good, and figure out whether you will use points or credits to breed them. And be set with the name/s, age bred and preferred gender of the horse, so when the opportunity comes, POUNCE!

Here’s my list in no order. May give some lineage ideas:
1. Der Satan Ists, colt, Smoke Glacken x Affirmed x Icecapade, preferably bred as a 3yo
Why: While Smoke Glacken may not be a blue-blooded sire, this breeding gives me a nice triple Native Dancer in the 5th generation as well as 4×5 Nearctic and 4th generation double Raise a Native. Icecapade is also a half-brother to Ruffian. Named for a Nargaroth song
Using: preferably credits

2. Restless and Dead, filly, Sadler’s Wells x Secretariat x Affirmed, bred as a 3yo
Why: Sadler’s Wells is one of the best-known sires in the sim and this is the last year he can be used. The double triple crown winners will add some more punch. Named for a Witchery song.
Using: points

3. Kriegsnebel, preferably colt, Rock of Gibraltar x Elusive Quality x Silver Deputy, bred as a 2yo
Why: Triple Northern Dancer plus Danehill blood equals quadruple Natalma, 5x5x5x6. Also double Mr. Prospector. Named for a Nargaroth bootleg CD
Using: preferably points

4. Dead Ication, filly, Ghostzapper x Storm Cat x Forty Niner
Why: this expensive combo already produced Capitulation, winner of 5 races in a row including 2 stakes races. Northern Dancer and Mr. Prospector inbreeding, real life Ghostzapper holds multiple 120+ Beyers. Named for a Nargaroth DVD release
Using: points

5. Gates of Eternity, preferably filly, Smarty Jones x Monsun x Lord Avie, bred as a 2yo
Why: A combo like this is only for the adventurous folk. Free of inbreeding. Smarty has never been crossed with Monsun before. Also, in the last five years, Monsun has never been crossed with Lord Avie. Named for a Moonblood song (Nargaroth also covered it)
Using: credits

6. Blacklist, filly, Pivotal x Charismatic x Sadler’s Wells, bred as a 2yo
Why: Pivotal was one of the leading 2yo sires last year. This pattern=triple Northern Dancer as well as a cross to the mare Special. Double Special is present in 5 of Pivotal’s top 10 offspring last year. 2 of those top 10 have triple Northern Dancer, and 3 have Sadler’s Wells blood in the DS. Named for an Exodus song
Using: credits

7. Strike of the Beast, filly, A.P. Indy x Smart Strike x Sadler’s Wells, preferably bred as a 2yo
Why: You can’t go wrong with A.P. Indy blood. He produces 89.2% winners as a sire, Smart Strike with near 70% win percentage as damsire. This line produces little inbreeding, 4×5 Bold Ruler. Combining these 2 sires with a Northern Dancer son has already produced a millionaire in the last 5 years. Named for an Exodus song.
Using: points

8. Lamounier, colt, A.P. Indy x Affirmed x Unbridled, bred as a 2yo
Why: A.P. Indy again. This line, like the last, has little inbreeding, 4×5 Bold Ruler again. A.P. Indy x Affirmed is an underused combo, the 3 I found in the sire lookup were all decent allowance runners. Named for the frontman of the now defunct Sarcofago.
using: preferably points

9. Cancer of the Soul, colt, Curlin x Seattle Slew x Northern Dancer, bred as a 2yo
Why: Real life Curlin is the new richest horse in America. Since Curlin doesn’t have a 5x pedigree option yet, I replaced him with his sire, Smart Strike, in hypomating. Since I know Curlin has Deputy Minister in him, this breeding will give me 3×4 Northern Dancer as well as the 4×5 Native Dancer I already have with Smart Strike in the sire spot. Named for a Bloodbath song
using: preferably points

10. Armageddon’s Raid, colt, Giant’s Causeway x Unbridled x Secretariat, no preference 2/3yo
Why: Giant’s Causeway seems to go well with Unbridled blood. This combo has already produced a stakes placed horse. 3×4 Secretariat. Named for a Belphegor song.
Using: no preference

11. Stigma Diabolicum, colt, Galileo x Machiavellian x Fappiano, no preference 2/3yo
Why: I love the inbreeding in this pattern. Triple Mr. Prospector, double Natalma, double Native Dancer, double Hail to Reason, and quadruple Almahmoud (6th generation). Lots of inbreeding, but just enough not to be inbred overkill as most of the inbreeding is in the 5th and 6th generation. Named for a Belphegor song
Using: no preference

Now that you have a list like that, it’s time to start setting priorities. Start with the sire’s age. You want to go oldest first, then get younger, putting the freshman sires near the bottom, as you have plenty of time to breed with them. For my list, I’m starting with Restless and Dead, since this is Sadler’s Wells’ last year. Back in the first issue, I said that I wanted to breed this horse using points to sartori, my master stable. If you also want to breed to a pensioned sire, you also need to figure out how long it will take to get the points for the horse. Back in the first article, I predicted I’d have the points by June or July.

Another thing you want to consider is popularity. You don’t want to use credits for a horse like Lamounier; not only is it pretty much impossible, it’s also extremely expensive. Save your credits for a horse of less demand that the credit option isn’t going to be taken within 5 seconds after the start of breeding. 1100 points may take 10-20 months to earn, but it’ll be worth it in the end.

Sartori’s race blog:
The new year has started on a good foot at my place. My master stable already earned 66 points this year, Stain of Mind broke her maiden, and battleone’s top horses, Barbarosa and Cousin Ed, have trained up to sharp. Barbarosa’s last start was a 3rd in a $52300 NW4x Allowance, 94 beyer. He’s trying out the new Indonesia track this week. My first start with Cousin Ed was a 3rd in an ungraded stakes, a 105 beyer. I decided to push him a bit and put a G3 as a second choice entry, a mile race. His first choice is also a mile, as his last start, at 7.5 furlongs, he seemed to be picking up towards the end.

My gstar stable is also sending out it’s newest edition, a filly named Schunard. Schunard (Touch Gold x Cherokee Run x Sadler’s Wells) is based on my old F-graded Rotten Well Run. Schunard is an exception to my “metal” naming process. Schunard was named after Angel Dumott Schunard, a drag queen street drummer with AIDS in the Broadway musical Rent (also a movie). Angel always had a positive, helpful attitude and many who are or become familiar with Rent bond with him/her. Unfortunately, Angel eventually succumbs to the AIDS and dies in the play. “Schunard” could also refer to “Schaunard”, the musician character in Puccini’s “La Boheme” that the Rent character was based off of. Schunard (the horse) seems to like the dirt sprints so I’m keeping her on that. Her first start was a 65 beyer, 3rd place finish. She ran very green and came up “needs rest” after the 6.5 furlong run in the slop. She’s sharp now and hopefully she’ll improve.

Off topic: If you like this game, check out Starters Orders 3. It’s an offline computer game that gets as close to mirroring real life racing as a game may get. VERY addicting.

[6

post-7140","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-new-user-info
["GET
