A traditional Derby undercard race, the Television is run at five furlongs. Distance may be key to picking a winner as many have not tried it. There’s a lot of early speed in this race so the horses who can sit back and make a late move have a bit of an advantage. Let’s take a look at the field.

#1 Elusive Eight 15/1

Elusive Eight has only started at six furlongs in his three career starts. After finishing fourth on debut in a tough Twitch race he dropped down to local California bred races for his next two starts. He easily broke his maiden by two and a half lengths with a 78 speed in March but a month later was a different story. That race (an allowance just two weeks ago) saw him win by a head with a 73 speed. In his two wins he let some front runners go ahead of him but never got really far back in his fields. He’s a son of Eight Rings out of an Elusive Quality x Devil’s Bag mare. Second dam Pack Your Bags Pye was a grade one winner but only made one start at two.

#2 Creeper Laws 13/1

Creeper Laws is the only runner seeking a maiden win here. The son of Tiz the Law out of a Candy Ride x Orb mare was second on debut at the end of March. That was a five and a half furlong non-winners of one in nine months allowance. He was last of four early on but closed almost four lengths down the stretch to lose by just three quarters of a length while running a 69 speed.

#3 Catalina Again 10/1

Catalina Again is the only stakes winner in the field. He broke his maiden on January third in a five furlong HOT race in which he was fourth of five early on before demolishing the field winning by three and three quarters lengths. He ran a 79 speed that day but in his next start he dropped a bit, winning a listed going five and a half furlongs in similar fashion with a 78 speed. He’s a son of Catalina Cruiser out of a Maclean’s Music x Awesome Again mare. She has a graded placed five year old son of Catalina Cruiser who won once in three starts as a two year old.

#4 Block Boss 5/1

Block Boss won his only start in late February. He took a five furlong maiden going wire to wire by one length with a 78 speed. He had to work for the lead too and it was a full field of fourteen behind him so the race was very impressive. He’s one of three co-favorites and he is certainly a danger here. He’s a son of Street Boss who was reportedly given a boost within the last couple of years as a stallion and out of the grade three winning Awesome Again x Storm Cat mare Coca Roller. Coca Roller made only one start at two and has yet to reproduce herself in the shed.

#5 Jamisonof The Cog 5/1

As befits his name this colt is a son of record setting turf sprinter Cogburn out of a Pioneerof The Nile x Seattle Slew mare. He has a half brother by Medelssohn (fittingly named Menof the Slew) who won four times as a two year old and added the Grade Two Land’s End as a three year old. Jamisonof The Cog was a winner in his lone start. That race came at the end of March going five furlongs. Against a field of twelve others he was allowed to cruise on the lead never being challenged and winning by an easy two and a half lengths. He ran an 81 speed there but he probably won’t get such an easy lead again here.

#6 Steel Tap Thunder 8/1

Steel Tap Thunder is also a winner of one start. He closed from ninth early on to win by a half length in a four and a half furlong maiden event. That race came at the beginning of March and he ran a 72 speed. This race sets up nicely for a closer although that speed is a bit light for this field. He’s a son of Real Steel out of a Tapit x Medaglia D’oro mare. His dam has produced one stakes winner (by Uncle Mo) who was unplaced in her only start at two.

#7 Groenhem 7/1

A winner of his only start, Groenhem scored in a five and one half furlong maiden back in March. He took the race by coming from ninth early on to win going away by two lengths with a 75 speed. That may help him in races going longer distances but dropping back by half a furlong may be a tough ask. He’s a son of Silver State out of a Tapit x Street Cry mare.

#8 Abenwald 9/1

Abenwald exits a residency restricted stakes going five and a half furlongs. In that spot he took the lead from the get go, opening up after some early competition but could not hold off the late run of Catalina Again. He ran a 75 speed in that spot which was two points lower than he ran in his maiden victory back in February. In that race he easily got to the front early and cantered home a winner. He’s a son of Frosted out of a Quality Road x General Meeting mare. She produced a graded placed stakes winning daughter by Connect who did her best running as a three year old.

#9 Grey American 7/1

Freshman sire Seize the Grey is represented by Grey American who is out of a graded placed American Pharoah x Seattle Slew mare. She did her best running as a three year old and her first foal by Mr. Speaker won four times as a two year old and is also graded placed. Second foal by Mo Donegal won her first four starts as a two year old and was stakes placed last season. Grey American won his only start back in March taking a five furlong maiden by coming from tenth early on to win going away by a length and three quarters. That experience may be crucial as many of his rivals are dropping down in distance which can be tricky. He earned a 79 speed in that spot.

#10 Mandalounar 10/1

Mandalounar earned an 80 speed in his debut which came just three weeks ago. He took a six and one half furlong maiden HOT race by going wire to wire. In a field of four he easily opened up on his rivals and widened his lead down the lane, winning by four lengths. He’s a son of Mandaloun out of a Malibu Moon x Deputy Minister mare and is her first foal.

#11 Ghosterdini 5/1

The last of our co-favorites is Ghosterdini, fittingly a son of Ghostzapper out of an American Pharoah x Bernardini mare. His dam produced a graded placed stakes winning daughter by War Front who was unplaced in her only start at two. Ghosterdini debuted in March in an allowance non winners of one in nine months. In that five furlong spot he sat fourth of five early on before motoring home by a length and a half while running an 80 speed.

#12 Louisville Kaboom 37/1

Looking to explode this race as the longest shot on the board is a horse fittingly named Louisville Kaboom. He’s a son of Sound Volcano out of an Overanalyze x Palace Music mare. His three year old full brother won six of his seven starts as a two year old and now as a three year old is graded placed. Louisville Kaboom was a winner of his January debut, a $75,000 claiming event at four and a half furlongs which he won by prompting the early leader before going on to win by a quarter of a length. Claimed out of that race by his current connections who entered him back in a March allowance where he again mixed it up up front but this time he was beaten into second, losing by three and a quarter lengths. He ran a 68 speed in that spot which was run at six furlongs.

Good luck to all!

A field of twelve colts and geldings line up in Kentucky for the Grade Three Television Stakes.
