The speed figs in the restricted stakes races make the 4 year old son of UNBRIDLED’S SONG x STORM BIRD x HALO a fit in here but those numbers don’t always bear out against open competition. He likes the distance and certainly has the class to be a factor but question marks do loom. I think he will need to use to much to make an early lead from this far outside post, but there is not a ton of speed in the race so dismiss at your own risk.

PP 18 OTTO CAUSES(IRE) TR verona JKY A Little ML 18/1

Talk about your late season runs… This 5 year old son of GIANT’S CAUSEWAY (IRE) x KINGMAMBO x BUCKPASSER was held over for drug testing after his last race a stunning 118 at 10f in an Open Stake race. He came up clean but where did that career best come from? Maybe he just likes the fall as this 118 is nearly a year to the day from his tremendous run in the 07 Breeders Bowl where he went 117. He is a millionaire and all kidding aside he has the talent to upset the apple cart in here if he can make the top with speed to his inside. At 18-1 he looks like a huge overlay.

PP 19 EMPTY RIVER(KY) TR minnslew JKY Ni Williams ML 21/1

Certainly not coming in here on a high note but may be trying to juice this Empty River up with the old turf to dirt thing. Back in June he had nice graded score and he has been running with the top tier of horses all year so the level should not be a concern. He likes the distance and if he is on his A game he fits with the top ones here. It just does not look to me like he is at the top of his game right now.

AND FINALLY

PP 20 MAMBO BONES TR jrogue5 JKY E Pete ML 9/1

Last but certainly not least is this very impressive son of KINGMAMBO x DANEHILL x LE FABULEUX. I covered this one back in April and may have even chosen him the winner but I was wrong that time. I am not sure if this millionaire elder statesman does not prefer a bit more ground than is being offered, but the 1.3 in the coffers says he and his trainer know a lot better than some punk writer. Will the 20 post compromise his chances or will he add to his legend ala Big Brown and score from the far outside. If Mambo Bones is not feeling his age and can reach back to January and find his best form he could be a major threat. I would like his chances a lot better if there was another furlong.

THE PICKS

If you can remember back to the first horse of this preview you are less senile than I and you will remember that I really liked Folsom Blues and he will be the pick winning a great stretch duel with the legendary Ermington Pegasus with Tarharka and Bernie x 3 picking up the minor spoils.
