Bowl Dirt Marathon

The Breeders’ Bowl Dirt Marathon is the longest in distance of all the Bowl races at 14-furlongs on a dirt surface. We have 14 runners coming to California to compete in the Marathon. Weather conditions are looking favorable for a fast and dry track. The race is open to horses age 3 and up and has never been won by the same horse twice, however, Let Me Be Cadet did finish second in consecutive years (2020 & 2021).

The race record for highest speed is 119.4 recorded in 2016 by Slip of the Tongue with the lowest odds for the winner being established in 2015 by Little Column B (Paid $8.80) and the highest odds of a winner occurring just last year when Likeigiveahoot who upset the field and paid $35.80.

Post position 3 has been the luckiest with four winners leaving from this gate and post 11 has also had a nice number of winners with three. Will one of the race records be broken this year? Will the winner come out of one of these lucky post positions? Ya never know, but let’s take a look at the competition in this field.

1 TREVOR LAWRENCE 11/1 (owned by Newmarket)

Tresenpunto is the game mare for this runner and she was an established allowance runner who had somewhat better success in the breeding shed as two of her nine children have won listed stake races and another pair have hit the board in stake races. Trevor Lawrence was sired by Sea The Stars (a sire that favors the turf) however, Trevor loves the dirt and has won 7 of 11 starts on the soil and been ITM 10 times, delivering more than $900k in earnings.

Trevor Lawrence’s seven wins have all been in consecutive races and started in April of 2022 when this 4yo broke his maiden by a health 3+ length margin at 9.5 furlongs. He followed that up with a trio of small field wins in allowance races, dropping to the back of the fields and rallying to win by decent margins. This past March, he ventured into an 11.5f listed stake race field and sailed from last to first, gapping the field by two strides and notching a career best speed of 121 in the process.

Trevor moved up to graded competition after the listed stake vin, and again went from last to first in the G2 Grumpy Old Man Marathon (13f) taking the top prize by over 3-strides on a wet surface and a 113 speed. His last start was in the Monster Mash where he trailed the leader by 13 at the midway point of the 14f race and proceeded to crush the field by four strides and another 113 speed figure.

Trevor Lawrence looks to make it 8-in-a-row and could do so. He has beat a few of his competition before, such as Justa Storm Strike (in the Monster Mash) and both Rafeal and Street Cap Tap (in the Grumpy Old Man Marathon). He has won several races by comfortable margins and is one to watch out for in this field.

2 JUSTA STORM STRIKE 8/1 (owned by Stockswami)

This 5yo colt is a scratchbred runner out of the Justify x Smart Strike x Storm Cat breeding line. This bloodline has produced a runner who has won on both the grass and dirt surfaces with better outcomes on the dirt, winning 4 of his 6 career wins and the vast majority of his $789,000 in career earnings.

This season has been pretty good for Justa Storm Stike as he has a pair of wins and pair of thirds in five grade races. He started the year with a win on a sloppy surface in the G2 Buckeye Stayer defeating the field by over five lengths and a 103 speed for the 2-mile event. On a dry surface in the G1 Cayuga Lake Special, he finished third going the same 2-mile distance and rallied from 14 back at the ¾-pole to finish just under four off the winner with a 107 speed. In the 15f G2 Nakatomi Styer, Justa Storm Stike struck hard late in the race to capture the victory by nearly 2-lengths.

The 10f G1 Movieland Shiny Cup was his only off board run this year as he finished 8th and the shorter distance probably had an impact on his performance, however, the 113 speed he posted is the best for this racing season. He rebounded a bit in his last start, the G1 Monster Mash (14f) gaining 9-strides in the second half of the race to finish third with a 110 speed.

Justa Storm Stike has popped 110+ speeds in his last two races and has been running lower than that for the early part of this racing season. If he can boost this a little bit in this outing, a victory may come his way!

3 MOREEF 6/1 (owned by Lenny271)

This entrant’s mother, Empire Lady, is a stake winner who earned 10 wins in 26 starts and she has mothered 15 children, of which four have won a stake race and Empire Lady’s roots extend back to Hall of Famer Empire Reef a G1 winner who won over $2.7 million in purses. Moreef was sired by Uncle Mo and he is one of two entries in this field who has not won a grade level race.

Trailing by a dozen strides at the half, in his last start (listed stake)< Moreef dug in and rallied to blow away the field with over a four length advantage and a 113 speed. The start previous to this win, was another listed stake where Moreef came on hard and finished second with a career best 119 speed. These were on the heels of 114 and 111 speeds in allowance races where he won by a cozy 3-strides in June and was third back in May.

What about graded races? Moreef kicked off the 2024 season with three G1-races and put in a lovely 2nd place finish in the January Bowery King, moving from 14 back at the half to miss the win by a stride and 118 speed. This was followed by a poor 9th in the Fulfilling Vendettas (110 SP) where his late run never got turned on and was 6th in the Sythetic Spring Championship (105 SP) which was on the poly surface and his first tryout on this surface.

Form looks very good of late and speeds of 110+ over last four races are promising, especially the 119 two back. It may be now or never for him to get that elusive grade level win and he enters off a very good win where the speed could have been higher considering he won by an easy four strides.

4 LORNE VOYAGER 21/1 (owned by VYZ)

Lorne Voyager’s (sired by Tapit) mother Outback Voyager is an Eclipse winner as well a member of the game’s Hall of Fame. She won 11 times in her 26 race career with $4.5 million in earnings. She is the mom to nine horses within the game, three of which have won G1 level races and another that is a listed stake winner.

Lorne Voyager has bankrolled slightly over $700,000 in purse money as a result of winning 6 of 14 starts and finishing ITM 10 times. He has raced in a mix of turf and dirt over his career with four of the wins derived from dirt races. During 2024, he has raced once on the turf, finishing second in an allowance race with four on the dirt and a 3-race win streak.

The first win came on April Fools day in a listed stake field where he was 7-back early on and rolled over the field by 5 lengths and 106 speed. He advanced up to the G1 Razorback Route (14f) where he ran fourth early on and pounced on the leader in the stretch to win by a stride with a 112 career-best speed.

His last start was terrible and ended his winning streak as he finished last in the 2-mile Seattle Stayer and lost ground throughout the race. Maybe the 2-mile distance was too much for him. He will need to shrug this disaster off and focus on the task ahead of him. An effort similar to the Razorback Route will be needed and probably a bit higher speed, to take this one.

5 GOODBYE EMPIRE M 10/1 (owned by Haack)

Goodbye Empire M is one of two runners in this field that has not won a graded race. He is a scratchbred with the breeding line of Empire Maker x Affirmed x Mr. Prospector and has 7 wins over 21 starts and $562,000 in career earnings.

14 furlongs is his favorite distance as he has raced 10 times at this route length and has a record of 5-2-1. In 2024, he has four starts, all have been at the 14-f distance and he started the year off with a pair of quick wins in listed stakes. The first was by a wide 6-length margin and a career best speed of 115 on a sloppy surface, wiring the field. The second was a good 3+ length margin where Goodbye Empire M was running 4th early on and picked off horse one-by-one in the stretch run, notching a 108 speed figure.

His last two starts were in graded company where he finished third in the G3 Atlanta Cup, taking the lead coming around the turn and squandering it in the stretch, beat by over three strides and a 110 speed. Goodbye’s last race was in mid-June in the G1 Razorback Route where he again snagged the lead only to be overtaken by Lorne Voyager (also entered into this Bowl race) and finishing second over a length behind the winner and a 111 speed.

Goodbye Empire M is the oldest horse in this field at the age of 6. Still, this guy who is usually pretty close to the front runner has been performing well and is rarely off the board at the 14-furlong distance. In his last pair of starts, he was able to take the lead but it only lasted for a brief time and Goodbye Empire M will need to find a way to hold onto it this time, should he find himself again in that spot.

6 GHOULISH DELIGHT 12/1 (owned by Tenpoint)

Ghoulish Delight is a scratchbred that houses the breeding of Ghostzapper x Seattle Slew x Kingmambo. He is a 4yo runner and has won four of his 15 starts with a few bucks short of $700k in career earnings.

His first stake race occurred last December where he finished second with a good 113 speed and he followed up with another second in his next listed stake race. In February,of this season, he roped in his career best speed of 117, despite this solid number, he finished third in a listed stake race at 10.5 furlongs, making up 8 strides in the final quarter of the race to end up short of the win by just a bit more than a length.

Gholish Delight would earn his first stake win in the listed division in April with a 114 SP going 13 furlongs and trailing by about 17 at the midway point and running away with the win by over three strides. This good outcome brough Gholish up to the grade level and the G2 (15f) Nakatomi Stayer but a fourth place finish was the best he could pull off. After this start, he tried the G2 Dawn to Dusk Cup (12f) on the turf and had a very similar race, finishing fourth again.

Ghoulish Delight returned to the dirt in his last outing, the 2-mile long Seattle Stayer and after trailing by some 16-lengths, he became a lightning bolt and struck hard and fast marching from last to first and a strong 5 stride margin with a 104 speed. Ghoulish Delight has a very nice late run and while the speed looks a bit on the lower side in his last race, he won by such a big margin it was not necessary to push him harder in the event. Contender if he can make that lightning bolt strike again.

7 RAFAEL 9/1 (owned by Groupies)

Rafael is a scratchbred 5yo gelding with the bloodline of Nadal x Broad Brush x Street Cry. He has won seven of his 29 career starts and has been in-the-money 17 times which has brought home over $800,000 in earnings.

In January of this season, Rafael came out all fired up, winning a listed stake at 12 furlongs with a 118 speed, racing in a mid-field position early on and powered his way to the front to win by 4-lengths. He followed this with another win in the G1 Bowery King at 11 furlongs making a strong run home from 11 off at the half to win by a stride and a career best speed of 119. Rafael did well in the 12f Fulfilling Vendettas (2nd and 115 SP) and in the Hail to the King (3rd and 112 SP) both G1 events.

Things have quickly cooled off after these nice outcomes as he has been off the board in his last four trips which see him moving down the ranks with a pair of G1 races in a recent listed stakes appearance. Rafael has not made a serious threat in any of these outings he could be feeling a bit of wear. In his last start, he finished fifth, much closer to the winner than the previous three starts where he was double-digit strides behind the winner. This came after a near 2-month break.

Rafael is running once again with a near 2-month break and showed improvement last time out after a similar break. Could this recent break result in the turn around he needs?

8 SENSWAZA 16/1 (owned by Given)

Senawaza is the only female in this field and she has the most career victories in this race. She has won 11 of 23 starts and has more than $1.1 million in earnings. She was sired by Street Sense and this 5yo is the first child out of stake winning game-mare Unarawaza who won 8 of 24 starts.

In 2024, Senawaza has made 6 starts with the first two occurring in the allowance division and all of the races with the exception of one were at the 14-furlong route distance. She won the first allowance race by a bit over a stride and had to rally from 6th at the half to get the win with a 109 speed, her best of the year. The other allowance race, she was a heavy 1/10 favorite in a short field of four and won easily by five strides.

Senawaza then returned to grade level, a level she had not competed in since September, 2023 and into the G1 Desert Lady Stayer she went, finishing 2nd nearly 2-lengths off the winner, but she sliced a deficit of 10-lengths at the half way down and posted a 103 speed. The G3 No Regrets saw Senawazamarching across the line in the top spot by close to 2-strides and a 108 speed. The G1 Sneaky Sneaky Stayer turned out to be one race to forget as she finished 5th and a large distance off the winner. Things turned around a bit in her last race, the G1 Great Dame as Senawaza made a move to take the lead at the ¾-pole and was overtaken in the stretch, finishing second with a 107 speed.

Senawaza squares off with the boys for the first time and a speed of 110+ looks to be needed to win this big race. Her career best is a 113 and came back in May, 2023 in the G2 Turtle Bridge on a sloppy track and is the only time she has surpassed the 110-level. She will need to put in a career best effort to upset the boys.

9 CHARMLEE 9/1 (owned by Stormboot)

Charmlee is the son of he-mare Castro Crest who is a G1 winner and that came on the turf and on a wet surface. He won 10 races over 39 races with seven of these coming on the dirt surface. Charmlee is a 4yo who was sired by Bricks and Mortar and has won 6 times in 18 starts with over $430,000 in earnings.

It is interesting to note that Charmlee was gelded back in early 2023 after four starts and since being gelded he has had top three finishes in all 14 starts since enduring this procedure. In 2024 he has made five starts and the first was a long 2-miles in a listed stake, finishing 3rd with a 104 speed after running 2nd most of the race. In April, he competed in a 13f listed stake and took another third with a 109 speed.

In June, Charmlee entered his first graded race, the G2 Crooklyn Handicap at 12f and after running in a mid-field position, he made an aggressive move in the stretch to finish 2nd with a 112 speed. This was followed with another third in a listed stake at 11 furlongs with a decent 109 speed. His most recent appearance was in the G2 Fall Championship where he found a slot closer to the lead, running third most of the way, launching a bid for the lead late in the stretch and then led the field to the line to win by a stride and a career best speed of 116.

Charmlee has been on quite a roll since being gelded and enters the Bowl race off a very fine outing where he pegged his first grade level win. He jumps up to the top tier of stake racing and he is a versatile running horse who can run near the front or lay back to a mid-field slot and patiently waits his time to strike. Could open eyes of many if he pulls off another win.

10 STREET CAP TAP 5/1 (owned by Harrylan)

Street Cap Tap is the 5yo son of 4-time listed stake winning game mare Street Cap. This game-mare has 8 children with half of her kids winning stake races and Street Cap Tap being the only one in the group to win a graded stake race. Street Cap Tap is sired by Tapit and he has nine wins, the second most in this field, and has grossed over $1.3 million in earnings.

This colt is generally a mid-field runner and has had nice success this year. He won three graded races at the start of the season, capturing the G3 New Orleans Stayer by a good 2-1/2 margin and a very respectful 116 speed. The G3 Atlanta Cup brought home his next trophy with a smaller ¾-stride margin and a 112 speed rating. The third win came in the 12-furlong Equinics (the Secretariat) where the competition was left some 2+ strides behind in his dust where he stroked out a season best 117 speed.

The streak ended in his last race, the Monster Mash where he made a lukewarm effort heading into the final turn, drawing within 2-lengths of the leader but was unable to advance any further than that and concluded the race in fifth some 7-strides off the winning Trevor Lawrence who he will be matched up against in this race.

Street Cap Tap has bounced back before after poor outings. Last December he was beat by 12 lengths in the G1 Remember That at Christmas (G1) and came back to win the above mentioned three-in-a-row. Prior to that, going back to Sept. 2022, he finished 5th in an allowance race and popped back to finish 2nd by under a stride in the next race. This could happen again for this fine runner.

11 CASTERLY CAT 10/1 (owned by Given)

Casterly Cat is sired by Curlin is out of Hall-of-Famer game mare Cadet Cat, an 11 time winner in 24 starts and won three grade level races, two of these were G1 victories. She has had great success in the breeding barn producing 10 children, six have become grade winners (one of these won an Eclipse award) and two others have found listed stake wins.

As for Casterly Cat, he has won 7 races in 17 starts and is closing in on the $1 million mark in earnings. This hard, late runner just picked up his a win this past August in the G3 Europe Stayer (14f) and had an impressive late run, trailing by a large 18-strides at the half and steam rolling over the field to draw off by 5 strides with a 114 speed, equaling his career best.

This marked Casterly Cat’s third win of 2024, the first came in January in an allowance race (12f, 108-SP) and the second in a listed stakes race in April going 13f on the turf and came from 18 back at the half to take the win by over 3-strides with a 107 speed. Between these wins were very poor outings where he was off the board and gapped by the winner.

Casterly Cat has struggled in the 8 G1 races he has appeared in with a second and pair of thirds as his best outcomes and the win being elusive. However, this year he has won every-other race. If this patten holds, this would be the time for the next win.

12 BEFORE YOU KNEW 23/1 (owned by Tenpoint)

This is a successful scratch-bred 3-yo that carries the Curlin x Danzig x AP Indy bloodline. At his youthful age it may be a bit surprising to find him with the largest career earnings of $2.2 million as other runners in this field are older and have many more starts.

Before You Knew has a 5-1-0 record over his 9 career outings. He likes to run on the lead and if he can’t get the pilot’s seat to fly on the front, he has no issue settling just off the lead to be a pest to the front runner. He swings into this event with a 3-race win streak what started with his first stake win in a listed event at 10.5 furlongs on a wet track which he wired the field with a 104 speed and entered the stretch with a 9-stride lead and coasted to the wire to win by nearly three strides.

He followed that up with an appearance in the third leg of the triple crown, the 12-furlong New Yorker and controlled the field every step of the way, winning by more than 2-lengths and a 110 SP. Before You Knew upped the distance to 13 furlongs in his last start, the Chatterbox and galloped off to an incredible 16-stride lead at the three-quarter pole and walked to the line to win by about three lengths with a 115 speed.

Before You Knew will be adding another furlong in distance as he enters this race and the 14-furlongs will be the longest route of his career. He looks very capable as he faces older horses for the first time. He will be looking to run away with this one and don’t be surprised if he does.

13 WENT NATIONWIDE 7/1 (owned by Spinround)

This 5yo is sired by Quality Road and is the sone of G3 winning game mare Deja Q who has four children that have won stake races (two of these in grade levels). Went Nationwide has 7 wins to his credit and the second highest career earnings in the field with over $1.6 million.

Went Nationwide raced in last years Breeders’ Bowl Dirt Marathon and rallied from a mid-field 7th at the half to come a stride and a half short at the line finishing a s strong second with a 116 speed. After the Bowl Race, he wrapped 2023 up on a winning note in the G1 Big Apple making a strong move in the stretch run and drawing off to a large 6-length victory leaving the field behind in his dust posting a 114 speed.

The 2024 racing season has been very light with only two starts this season. The first was at the end of March in the Desert Stamina Cup where Went Nationwide again rallied in the second half of the race and powered his way to the top and again hit that 114 speed and cruised to the line with a comfy 2+ length margin. His last start was in June in the Razorback Route and took a step back finishing fourth but making up 7-lengths in the effort in the back half of the race and a respectful 110 speed. He was out performed by Lorne Voyager (winner) and Goodbye Empire M (2nd), both who are entered into this Bowl race.

Went Nationwide is very lightly raced this year and has not taken on much wear and tear this season. He can still crank out the 110+ speeds. He has raced the 14-furlong distance nine times and has been ITM eight times, the only off board trip was his last race several months ago. Despite the outcome in his last start, he is well rested and capable of getting the Bowl win this time.

14 MALAK BILACC 20/1 (owned by Kymar)

Malak Bilacc, at age 3, is the youngest horse in this contest. He is sired by Not This Time and is out of allowance winning game mare Imbil Account. Malak Bilacc is one of four children out of this mare and only one to win a stakes race. Malak has won four of his 8 starts and has just a pinch over $403,000 in earnings, all of these are the lowest in the field.

Malak Bilacc has had success racing stake events this year. April though July, he raced in three listed stakes, ranging in distance between 9.5 to 10.5 furlongs with a win, second and third collected in his efforts with speeds going upward from 99 to 113.

He has only one grade level appearance and that was his last start in the G2 Silver Stakes, positioned 4th early on in the 11-furlong race. Maleak smoothly maneuvered his way past the front runners and drew off to a 3-length victory with a 112 speed.

Malak Biliacc moves up to the top echelon of racing and this youngster faces older horses for the second time (he finished 2nd back in July in a listed stakes event) and has shown he can battle with them. Undoubtedly he has a promising career ahead of him and facing this group of experienced grade runners could be a tough task for him. Still, I suspect he will put in a good showing for himself and could pick up some minor purse money.

My Picks

I’m giving my top choice to Trevor Lawrence. He has a long win streak going and offers nice value at 11/1. Ran away from the field by 4 strides in last. Could leave the field well behind again.

Charmlee always seems to find a way to hit the board and the 116 speed in his last race may be showing that he is at his peak. Can’t leave out of exotic wages.

Goodbye Empire M is rarely off the board when racing 14-furlongs and could possibly take the lead at some point, but has struggled to hold it. Still, he has the knack to hit the board.

The Breeders’ Bowl Dirt Marathon is the longest in distance of all the Bowl races at 14-furlongs on a dirt

[2

post-68593","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-previews
["GET
