Jockey W. Mafit had nothing by praise for the winning mare “She broke from the gate well, grabbed great positioning early, and was ready to run when I asked her too. She is a very smart horse!” Magpie Fever has had a series of near misses throughout her 2008 campaign, and all her misses were by less than 4 lengths. Here’s how the field performed:

Magpie Fever got a perfect trip, laying off the early speed settling in to the fifth position. She started her move to the front just past the midway mark, cruising up the rail where she rallied at the head of the stretch to win by 2 easy lengths. Magpie Fever got my second choice in the race.

Pointmambo, who just jumped up the class levels in no time, made an impressive debut in the graded class. Breaking from the second post, she was shuffled back early on and spotted the leader 8 lengths by the half. She was able to split horses coming to the stretch and galloped gamely to finish second, at 14-1. Pointmambo was my third selection and if you boxed my three choices for the exacta, you were rewarded with a payoff in excess of $300.

Taking the show spot was Zanpakutoh, who took an early misstep, dropping back to the 11th spot early on. She was able to recover quickly, and found daylight up the inside and almost took the place spot from Pointmambo.

Sunny Natalia had her normal turtle-like start from the gate, finding herself in the 12th spot by the first call. By the third call, she moved into the 11th spot and was forced wide into the final turn. Although she gave up distance going wide, it was a smart move as it gave her the opportunity to clear by tiring hrses and take the forth spot.

Dance of Death continues to record 100+ speeds, but found it difficult to win once again. She had decent positioning early, forming a wall with a few others. As the wall fell apart, she continued on by herself and took home the final purse check in the fifth spot.

Johari, the pole sitter, got wedged in towards the rail at the start and yielded a good dozen plus lengths to the leader. She was able recover somewhat, cutting her deficit in half and finishing 6th.

The early pace setter, leaving from the 14th spot, was Jazzy Seattle. Jazzy cut some quick fractions as the 29-1 shot, building up a lead of three lengths by the middle of the race. Jazzy was one coming into the race with some decent performances, albeit, against lower classes. I felt that despite the odds, she would beat some of the other talent in the field. She did that…finishing seventh and beating half the field.

Fortheloveofgodben was a huge disappointment to me and was my top selection. This horse looked ready to make the jump to graded company, after winning several regular stake races. Fortheloveofgodben got away well, taking to the forth spot and staying within 4 to 5 strides of the leader. That was until the field entered the final turn when she just yielded to others and had nothing to offer, finishing eigth.

The ninth spot went to Night Listener who once again had problems going the extra distance asked of her. She ran in the middle of the field for a good portion of the race and was never a serious factor.

Balance got off to a quick start, running second early on. She held this position and finally threw the towel in just as the field passed the mile marker. Balance ended up in the 10th spot.

Proofwild put in a pretty similar effort as Balance, running third and vanished from the radar near the mile marker to end up 11th.

Mcfly couldn’t find any decent positioning early on, and got trapped into the middle of the field. She had a few opportunities to break from the pack, but showed that her stamina wasn’t there for this race, ultimately drifting back into the 12th position.

Shadwell, the 44-1 longshot, ran in the rear for the entire race, but was able to beat one horse, and that was….

Prospector’s Rose. Rose just lacked everything in the race. She ran with a gang of horses early on, but departed from them and seemed like she didn’t want to hang out with anyone and ended at the rear.

[3

post-6802","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-reviews
["GET
