The Pebbles Cup, a grade I race for the girls going a mile and half went to Financial Impact. With the victory, Financial Impact surpassed the half million dollar mark in career earnings. The win was her 7th in 13 starts.<\/p>\n
As the field left the chute, it was Friday Harbor who was the most eager one who went out and took the lead. Alinova took off with her but just couldn’t get by. She sat in the second spot, keeping pressure on Friday Harbor as the field went down the back stretch. As the field entered the final turn, Sake and Financial Impact, who were running side by side throughout the race, set their sites on the leader.<\/p>\n
At the head of the stretch, Financial Impact took over the lead with Sake putting in a tough effort, but unable to surpass the eventual winner. Financial Impact (my second choice) rewarded backers with a $12.20 payoff for the win. Sake, my first choice, settled for second, connecting for a $17.00 exacta.<\/p>\n
Although Friday Harbor was passed in the stretch, and beat by 8 lengths, she had enough left in her to take the show spot.<\/p>\n
High N Deep (my third choice) suffered her first career lost, but ran a fair effort passing tiring horses late in the race to finish forth.<\/p>\n
The fifth spot went to Polished Silver who ran an uneventful trip.<\/p>\n
Alinova made the early bid for the lead and then surrendered, taking the sixth spot.<\/p>\n
Polyamorous ran third around the first turn and just faded out of the picture as the field went down the back stretch, never making a serious threat.<\/p>\n
Miesque’s Gold was the 3-1 favorite and finished 8th, well out of the picture. She has struggled in the past going longer distances and this race proved to be a task for her.<\/p>\n
Unexpecting the 7-2 second favorite may have suffered a severe injury during the race. Unexpecting was making a switch to the grass and she made a very awkward move, jolting towards the rail, midway into the first turn. Coming off the turn, she was pulled up by Jockey Shaw. Jockey Shaw delicately handled her to the wire, and the speed rating was posted as a 2 (that’s right, a two). She was able to leave the track on her feet, but there is concern that her racing career may be in jeopardy.
