One of these races will take place here in Ascot as the fifteenth race on the card. Immediately following the Filly Grand Prix (G1) for two-year-olds we will see the older girls take to the line in the prestigious Queen Ascot Stakes (G1) over a mile out on the turf track. The race is open to three-year-olds and up and is sure to draw some of the top fillies and mares from around the country. The Queen Ascot Stakes (G1) has a rich history since its debut in 2001. Such famous fillies as the renowned two-time Breeders Bowl Mile and 1000 Guineas winner Storm Dog, owned by amandas have graced the turf here in the Queen Ascot. The stakes record for the Queen Ascot was initially set by Storm Dog in the 2003 running of the race but has since been equaled in 2006 by Thirteenth Date and in 2007 by Wassie’s Star G with the stakes record of 1:34 shared by these three fillies. Perhaps there may be a new stakes record made this Saturday? The weather has been cloudy up until now during the week, however there is some showers in our forecast during the coming days, however they are expected to stay out of the area on Saturday, and hopefully the ground will have enough time to dry out for the Queen Ascot Stakes (G1). Temperatures can be expected to be in the low 60 degrees Fahrenheit (about 52 Celsius) on Saturday for the Queen Ascot Stakes (G1). The race has drawn in almost a full field of fillies, eleven going to the post this year.
1. Planetarium (IRE) – (Galileo (IRE) x Kris S. x Storm Bird) – fairyking – T. Forster – 6/1
On the far inside closest to the rail during the race will be this impressively bred four-year-old filly who as bred and trained in Ireland. The bay filly, racing under the predominantly yellow silks of ‘Chief Stable Enterprises made her last start overseas in New York in the Other Spa BB Stakes (G3) over eight and a half furlongs. The filly finished third in this race, through six and a half lengths off the pace of the eventual winner. She is a fairly impressive filly, with only one off the board finish in her last eight career starts. Though graded placed, the filly has never managed to bring it home in a graded start, through she has got it done during listed stakes. This Saturday’s start in the Queen Ascot Stakes will be the fillies first start in a Grade I race. Look for this filly to probably be held just off the pace of the leaders, possibly back in second or third before she makes a late run down the stretch.
2. Culinary Cutie (IRE) – (El Prado (IRE) x Gone West x Seattle Slew) – buzz – J. Dyson – 7/1
Loading into the second gate will be the striking four-year-old Irish-bred filly out of top sire El Prado (IRE). The filly has a prestigious record with eight lifetime wins and career earnings amounting to $2,394,025. However, the fillies last race was a disappointing one. She finished a well distanced fourteenth in the Rhaegar’s Vengeance (G1) over twelve furlongs overseas in Argentina. The filly broke well and made her way up into fourth before fading badly early on in the race, perhaps a victim of the twelve furlong distance. Previously, her longest start was in the ten furlong Smackdown II where she finished second, albeit with a lower speed figure than usual. These races aside, the gray filly has been vary impressive, including winning last years Breeders Bowl Mile (G1). Look for this filly to also be sent out of the gate slightly off the pace, possibly being rated as far back as fourth in the early goings of the race.
3. Gone Wylde – (Gone West x Northern Dancer x Seattle Slew) – sarava02 – G. Brown – 5/1
Up next going down the line of entries is this blue-blooded five-year-old bay filly. She too has been impressive throughout her racing career with ten wins and lifetime earnings of $1,233,680. Her last start resulted in a three and one-fourth length win in the Phoney Smiles and Fake Hellos Handicap (G1) over a yielding turf course overseas in Upper New York. Should the filly be able to win again here in the Queen Ascot Stakes, it will become her third straight win. The filly has only finished out of the money once in her last eight starts. Look for this filly to also be bunched up in the group of horses setting just off the pace, possibly battling it out for second or third early on or possibly going on to lead out of the gate if there is no other early speed present in the race on Saturday.
4. Desert Theatre – (Theatrical (IRE) x Green Desert x Miswaki) – chloeawg2 – B. DeGrella – 12/1
Following as we go down the filed is this four-year-old chestnut filly running under the black and white colors of Right At Home Stables. The beautiful chestnut made her last start over a good turf track in Newmarket during the Pepperton Mile (G2) where she finished second, off the pace of the winner by just one and a half lengths. The filly is graded placed but has yet to win any stakes race during her six stakes starts so far during her career. Her closest call was during the Sportwood Distaff (G3) last May where she finished second, off the pace by one-fourth of a length, in just her second graded start of her career. With a little bit of luck, perhaps the filly will finally be able to get the job done here in the Queen Ascot Stakes this Saturday. Look for this filly to probably be on the lead or close to it on Saturday when they break out of the gate, where she will try to told that position for the whole mile over the turf course.
5. Torch The Flame – (Kingmambo x Seattle Slew x Alydar) – super7 – M. Day – 5/1
Close to the middle of the start gates this four-year-old filly, out of the graded-winning mare Gordie’s Seattle, will be loading into the gate. This spectacular filly has won ten races over the turf and has accumulated career earnings of $1,379,720. The filly has won such great races as the World Cup Ladies Turf Mile – Restricted an has placed in last years Breeders Bowl Mile. However, the fillies most recent rae came early last month in the mile long Society For Progressive Supranuclear Palsy Restricted (G1) where the bay filly finished a disappointing eleven lengths back in fourteenth after a bad start out of the gate. If the filly gets her run this Saturday in the Queen Ascot, she will probably be held back around the middle of the field, well off the pace from the leaders and won’t make her move until the stretch of the race.
6. A Case In Point – (Point Given x Aptitude x Storm Cat) – tsunami4 – W. D. Bubba – 99/1
Again we look towards the middle of the track and to race longshot A Case In Point, the bay four-year-old filly being raced in the black and gray silks of Tsunami. The Kentucky-bred filly made her last start over eleven furlongs in the Man of War Stakes (G1) overseas in New York where she finished a well distanced thirteenth in the race with a speed figure of just seventy-one. This filly hasn’t won a single race since September of last year, this win coming in the listed Shuffle Lode Stakes under previous owner goodtimes. New owner, tsunami4 acquired the filly after claiming her in a $2,5000 claiming race earlier this year. This filly appears to be far out of her league in this field and we may be looking for a miracle for her on the board this Saturday. There have been plenty of upsets in racing, and those looking for an outstanding betting choice in the Queen Ascot Stakes may want to take a look at this filly if they’re willing to take the risk. Look for this filly to probably be held around mid-pack out of the gate in the race and probably fade out as the race progresses.
7. Northern Pulp – (Pulpit x Northern Dancer x Buckpasser) – theogbarn – P. Harzheim – 3/1
Into the seventh slot is this five-year-old brown filly. The has impressively on seventeen turf races during her career along with one race over the dirt and has accumulated career earnings of $1,907,730. A Win here in the Queen Ascot Stakes could easily move her close the two million dollar mark in career earnings. The fillies most recent race was last month in China during the Society For Progressive Supranuclear Palsy Restricted (G1) where she finished six lengths back in fourth. This filly placed in the World Cup Ladies Turf Nine Restricted (G1) in September of last year and is looking on continuing her top placings in races. Since that race, the filly has finished out of the money only once in a race. With the other pace in the race on Saturday, look for the brown filly to be placed towards the back of the field early on and make her move just before or right when the field comes into the stretch past the stands on Saturday
8. Commander Geri (JPN) – (Geri x Deputy Commander x Al Hattab) – slim – P. Norton – 10/1
Loading into the next gate is the Japanese-bred four-year-old chestnut filly under the Union Jack silks of Tees Stables. The chestnut filly made her last start on an off track during the Pepperton Mile (G2) where she finished eight and a half lengths back in fourth in the mile long race. Both of the fillies graded stakes starts have been disappointing so far, along with the previously mentioned race, the filly also finished sixth in the Independence Day BB Stakes (G2) a few months earlier. However, the filly has managed to secure a single listed stakes race for her new owner who purchased the filly in auction early last year. The filly will probably be placed towards the back of the field on Saturday and work her way up throughout the race to challenge the front runners down the stretch.
9. Deerstanding – (Strong Hope x Meadowlake x Unfuwain) – scoobi2 – R. Williams – 10/1
Following as we continue to make our way down the field is the chestnut three-year-old with just about half a million dollars in career earnings, Deestanding, who will be loading into gate nine. The filly made her most recent start early last month in the Old Friends Equine Restricted (G1) where the filly was placed second after a review of a photo finish revealed that she’d lost the race by a head. In a stroke of what could only be called bad luck, this was the fillies second loss in a row that came down to a photo finish. The chestnut filly also lost the photo by a head in the Irish 1000 Guineas (G1) last July. Despite this, the filly has only finished out of the money once during her career, this in her second start of her career over the dirt at six furlongs. She finished seventh and her owner quickly switched the filly over to turf where she quickly found her forte. Though not having yet won a graded stakes, she has had several close calls and is only expected to improve throughout her career.
10. Wrath Of Tara – (Aptitude x Coronado’s Quest x Barathea (IRE) – tsunami8 – C. Donahue – 99/1
In the second post to the grandstand side is the second entry for trainer tsunami in the Queen Ascot Stakes. This four-year-old bay filly is another longshot in the field with only four previous starts over the turf and no wins over this surface. On the other hand, the brown filly has won four times over the dirt at allowance level for one of the fillies previous trainers, grandarmee. New owner tsunami obtained this bay filly by claiming her in a $7,500 claiming race this past May from murdoch. The filly has run only five times for her new trainer, none of which have ended in wins. Her most recent start was in the nine furlong Princess Di Cap where she finished a well distanced thirteenth in the race with a speed figure of fifty-three in just her second turf start for her new owner. Look for this filly to take off out of the gate towards the back of the field and attempt to make a move late in the race. Much like her stable mate, for bettors willing to take the risk, should the filly come home on the lead on Saturday, albeit unlikely, the pay out is sure to be a handsome one.
11. Red Rock Lass – (Red Ransom x Mr. Prospector x Northern Dancer) – beisbol – K. Livestock – 5/1
In the far outside post closest to the grandstand side of the track will be the final horse in our field for the Queen Ascot Stakes on Saturday. This five-year-old brown mare is out of the race winning mare Dancer Prospector. The brown mare had her last start in the listed Rowdy Legend Special over a mile overseas in Georgia last month. The mare won the race by two and one-fourth lengths, never challenged throughout the race as she staked the pace out the gate. This will be the mares first grade start since her disappointing seventh place finish in the That Goat Just Fainted Cap all the way back in 2006. The filly has impressively only finished off the board eight times in her thirty-race career. With any luck, her comeback nearly two years later to graded stakes competition will be a memorable one. Look for this filly to be rated from anywhere around the middle of the pack or back towards the rear of the field depending on the early pace and getting into gear just before the stretch where she will start to run down the other horses.
Tellnotale’s Picks
Win: Gone Wylde
Place: Northern Pulp
Show: Planetarium (IRE)
To all with runners in the Queen Ascot Stakes this weekend, good luck.
