A terrific time for 3-year-old watching is now underway. This weekend the focus is on the Grade 2 Swale Stakes in Florida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gowans Not (#4, 6-1) by Not this Time from the Stakes winning mare Smooth Pavement. Not won on debut early last season. By the spring he was a double Graded Stakes winner. The connections elected to send him against Grade 1 company in the Dell Futurity in California. He roared to the front and never looked back. Behind him in the Dell was Tales of Fraud (Tales of Ekati) who Not met again in the BB Juvy Sprint. However on this day he was stuck in post 13 and after showing good speed he weakened to 8th<\/sup>. His speed badge of 88 is respectable given he was put away after his latest. Now making his 3-year-old debut he\u2019s looking to get on track again. He does have other speed to worry about but his class could be on show this weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jakematt brings 3-year-old gelding Muppet Baby B (#6, 9-2) to Florida as a Graded placed bay by Concert Tour. He had won 4 times before he was any good. In his first Stakes action he showed he belonged with two placings before a powerful performance to win the Polish Reality in November. The win boosted his speed badge to 93 and he would equal this in the Happytime Stakes when a fast-closing third. He was beaten in a very close photo by BB Juvy sprint winner Tales of Fraud. His resume is now very real and his late charge will make for an interesting final furlong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A colt by Instagrand from a Tapizar mare, Tapizar Czar (#8, 7-1) rolls into Florida on a 3 race win streak. Trotter200 Racing has the bay 5 for 6 lifetime and a very legit player in the Swale Stakes. He had two wins to his credit when the connections elected to send him a mile on the tough Kentucky circuit. He beat a small field with a sustained run giving an impression any distance might be within his grasp. When they cut him back to sprints he continued to win and is now a two-time Stakes winner. Two back Czar beat Alex Crosses (Into Mischief) who then won three straight including a Grade 3 event in California. He will try to keep the momentum going by taking down this rich prize in his sophomore debut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Stockswami sends a son of Ghostzapper to the starter in Stormy Ghost Cat (#1, 4-1). The 3-year-old brown colt from a Storm Cat mare was unbeaten in his first 3 starts including a convincing win in the Almost Whirl Stakes last July. He found Graded Stakes racing tough during the summer but last time out when cutting back to 6 panels he flew home to be second to Fat Faced Rick. He also had three Graded Stakes winners behind him in a very good effort. His speed badge of 95 fits very well in this spot and he\u2019s been given plenty of time to recover and grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Speaking for myself on this one. I wish I could peak through the stable doors and see this one staring back at me. Haack\u2019s El Conguero Mayor (#9, 7-2) is a colt by Tapit from a Grade 3 winning Trippi mare. The light grey colt won on debut with an 88 speed figure. In late November, the colt zipped through 6.5 panels to win again. This time earning a new speed badge of 96. The colt has more potential and it\u2019ll be interesting to see if any of it is untapped this weekend. The Swale Stakes will be his first try against Graded company. It\u2019s most likely his first try against others who might match his speed. He adds a very exciting element to this race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Corza\u2019s Goes and Gets It (#5, 15-1) is a sophomore maiden after three races. He\u2019s a bay colt by Street Boss from a Candy Ride mare. The colt raced very well going a mile in his second start showing good early speed and just getting caught late. His last start was a Stakes race in Ohio. He was cutting back and no doubt the connections were hoping for a nice rally in the final quarter but it never happened. He ran evenly and improved his speed badge to 85. This race is much tougher and he needs to keep improving to make an impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Treme Racing has Fist of Fire (#7, 7-1) as a late entrant to the Swale. A son of Iron Fist brings some Louisiana flare to Florida for this rich event. He won on debut last March and won again in June. When he tried the Grade 1 Dell he was a longshot. Not was a big winner going wire-to-wire and this guy tried every step and finished a solid fourth. His try at a mile was pretty good too. The connections might go back there soon as he was not disgraced and improved his speed badge to 86. They sent him back to sprinting and he just missed in a Restricted Louisiana Stakes affair last November. He kicked off his sophomore season with a fifth in a Grade 2 race going 6 furlongs. His speed increased and he was behind Fat Faced Rick by only 2 lengths. He\u2019s obviously doing well after his last start but it makes you wonder if he\u2019s fully recovered enough for this race. He could be a sneaky play as his numbers and style make him possible. The 21 days off could be an issue as he could be a dull sharp. If you believe in such stuff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Oakridge\u2019s Masidawi (#3, 11-1) brings some mystery to this race. The colt by Mastery by a Elusive Quality mare. His stable trials and other races make it harder to determine his exact form. We do know he flopped his first and only Graded race attempt. But he owns a win over Bucaegor who is a promising type and entered into a NY Grade 3 event in a few weeks. His speed badge of 88 is close enough to make him interesting. Certainly his form is muddy but he\u2019s not without merit in this competitive field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Tfon brings the most experienced sophomore to the starter this Saturday in Double Ruby (#2, 5-1). A gelded son of Fire Away from the Grade 3 winning dam Hannaizar. Ruby took a few races to get going earning his first win in start six. His attempt at a mile is best forgotten and the minute he got pointed back to sprinting he was a different animal. Two good misses were followed up with two straight wins in Allowance company. Two back he hit a new speed badge of 91 and last time out he earned a 90 in a race just 24 days ago. Coming back quickly sometimes gives you a dull sharp horse but maybe that\u2019s just a thing I see too often. <\/p>\n\n\n\n A terrific time for 3-year-old watching is now underway.
