The race itself features a full field of 14 fillies and mares pursuing their shot at the $500,000 purse in this Grade I race. Many are coming to see this marathon, but I suspect many others are coming to share in the freebies. The track is handing out to patrons, free party hats, balloons, t-shirts as well as a slice of cake. The cake is the special item. The track is attempting to set a world record for the largest birthday cake ever served at a birthday party. I wish the track luck at this venture, but I’m more focused on the race.

1. Otto Giant 11-1
Otto comes into the race looking overmatched. She has one graded race in her history finishing way back. She is also stretching out to 16f for the first time. She’s only won one race in the past year and has been in a drought for sometime. I don’t see the drought ending here.

2. Slew of Cash 12-1
Slew of Cash also has one graded stakes under her belt. In fact, it’s her only stakes race. Last time out, she took second in the High and Low Marathon. She ran this 2 mile race in a speed of 99. The race before was also 2 miles (allowance level) that she won easily by 6 lengths in a very short field. Her speed was an impressive 102 in that race. She shows some talent, but hasn’t raced in a field of 10 or more in quite some time. Look for her near the lead early on. She could be an upset possibility.

3. Tiz Mon 19-1
Tiz Mon has won 3 of 6 races at 16f with a career best speed of 99. All of those wins were against allowance level company. The races she failed to score victory were in stakes level. Career-wise, she has 6 stake starts without coming in the money in any of those outings. Her history at the stakes level is very concerning.

4. CSI Super 5-1
CSI has won 12 of 35 route starts, with four of these going 16f. She has the talent to take this race, showing several races with speeds in excess of 100 going the distance. Her last two outings at this distance have been disaterous. In May, she finished way back after pacing near the leaders early on. In December, she looked like she may have mildly injured herself, never challenging, and posting her lowest speed since 2005. The distance may be taking a toll on her now.

5. Ogg Vorbis 10-1
Ogg has been hot. In her last 11 races, she shows a record of 5-5-0. She is taking a leap here from the stake level to graded and recently won a 16f race going gate-to-wire in a speed of 100 (her only start at this distance). She is loaded with speed and may be the rabbit in the race to catch. Although she doesn’t have much stake racing experience, she does loom as a spoiler.

6. Rude Stella 12-1
Rude has gone 16f three times. In those races, she placed twice and showed once. She is making a big switch over to the dirt, which she hasn’t run on since 2006. Her times in the 16f races were in the high 80’s to low 90’s speeds. The speeds she ran on the dirt way back were pretty close to the same she ran on the grass. This race will need a speed of 100 to win, and I don’t see Rude pulling that off.

7. GR Thrashing 26-1
GR is bouncing up to graded level off of a 7th place finish on the turf at the allowance level. GR has plenty working against her. First, she is untried at the 16f distance. Next, in her 8 stakes races, she has come up winless. She has had some success at the allowance level, mostly at shorter distances. She has too much working against her in this race to overcome.

8. Full Measure 7-1
Full Measure may be the one to beat. She has an impressive record going routes of 23-10-8-1. She has a 4-race win streak on the line and has won 5 of her last 6. She has never finished worse than 3rd going 2 miles and is coming off a monster of a win in the High and Low Marathon. In that race, she came from about a dozen lengths back to surge and win by 8, scoring a victory in a speed of 104. Use in all exotic wagers.

9. Tiz Fresh 24-1
Tiz likes the route and has been on the board in 8 of 15 route starts, visiting the winner’s circle 5 times. She has some early speed, which I think she will show, but I don’t expect it to last long. Her recent form shows her dropping back rapidly around the half pole. Additionally, she is returning to the dirt, where she’s only raced once. She’s never run more than 11f, and to add a half-mile distance does raise more concerns.

10. Bom Bom 7-1
Bom Bom returns to the dirt after a brief 3-race stint on the turf. She can run on either surface, but has primarily run on the dirt. She is extremely tough going 2 miles. Her record going this distance is 10-8-2-0. She normally runs this distance in speeds in the upper 90’s to over 100 and has an explosive late kick. Another one to use in exotics.

11. Indy’s Minister 9-1
Indy is pretty consistant in routes, hitting the board 21 of 34 races. She can fire up late, but she can be stubborn. If she doesn’t feel like running, she won’t. She can handle the distance, as she has a win and third in two tries. But will she feel like taking off is the question that only she can answer.

12. Bad Kicks 7-1
Bad Kicks is a big question mark. Four of her last five races recorded speeds over 100 going 10f and 12f. She’s hit the board in 8 of 10 routes. But big changes are happening. She switches to the dirt where she has yet to show any liking for. She’s also going further than she’s ever ran before. While she is tough on the grass, I’m not sold that this will transfer over to the dirt.

13. Icy Slumber 5-1
Icy is almost the spitting image of Bad Kicks. She also has an impressive record of being on the board 20 of 28 starts in routes. She does show a win in two 16f starts. She has only one start on the dirt back in her maiden days. Back in April, she ran 12f in a speed of 112. Hard to tell how she will take to the dirt. Myself, I’d pass using the theory “proof is in the pudding”. I need to see the proof first.

14. Less Than Kind 41-1
Less Than Kind is winless in 4 stake outings, however, is coming off a nice win at 14f, scoring a speed of 97. That race was against lower allowance level, however, in that race she proofed she can run on the dirt. She has been running turf races with decent results. Her speed on the dirt was much better than the turf. She has also shown she can go 16f (in past turf races). She could light the board.

The field has several horses that are swapping to the dirt from the grass. Many have little or no history that is reliable to judge how they will fare, so my picks are based on those who like the dirts, soooo….

My top pick is to the hot Bom Bom. She has mastered this distance and looks to be the one to beat. Having jockey Ross (24% win) aboard is added bonus.

Full Measure is top foe who can also take this one. She loves the marathon and should make it on the board.

Slew of Cash gets my third choice. She’ll be out on the lead early and the closers will need to reel her in.

Good luck and enjoy the birthday cake!!

[2

post-6525","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-previews
["GET
