It’s a FUTURITY!!

Yes, it is… To be specific, the Grade II Dell Computer Futurity in California (Reader, take care and watch for watered-down puns; they may hurt). This is the time when the American racing fan’s Vista changes from the just-finished 3yo classics to the 2yo’s, who have just started to mature, are trying longer distances, and separating the men from the boys. In today’s race, a solid-looking field of 13 2yo colts has answered the call to post. Who can make the hard-drive down the stretch? Which colt can RAM his way past the competition and create a long-lasting memory for his owners? Which rider will pick this data be the best? Okay, it’s getting deep in here… Let’s have a look at the field.

1) THE BIG PICTURE(KY) 5/1 dublinlad A Lewis 19%

This Saarland colt has been trying to click with the big boys all spring and summer and is a portrait of consistency, being right in the thick of things until midstretch before washing out slightly in deep stretch each time. His record lens the possibility that it would be no aberration if he was able to find the range this time and get the job done. Could win, and should at least get part in today’s race.

Interestingly, this colt broke his maiden at this track, with this rider. Maybe this’ll be the difference.

2) XTRA TALES(KY) 7/1 ejdstable T Bates 6%

Be careful when selecting sires… Too much inbreeding could result in an extra tail! Oh, wait… Wrong kinda tail, er, tale. Switching stories here…

This Tale Of The Cat colt improved quite a bit when stretched out and given five weeks’ rest instead of four. Now he’s on four weeks again. Will he regress, or is he maturing? Your guess is as good as mine!

3) NEVER QUIT(IRE) 12/1 wistful3 F Gossett 25%

This one goes to demonstrate that, even if your horse doesn’t run well on the surface you expected him to like, you should… well… never quit.

This fine-looking chestnut’s bloodlines look as if he was bred with turf racing in mind, but he ran only so-so in 2 tries on the sod. “Let’s try the dirt”, his trainer thought. Not only did the colt not quit, he suddenly turned into a budding star! Leading rider F Gossett has noticed, and will be aboard as this promising colt tries to make it 3-for-3 on the dirt.

4) WORST CASE(TX) 24/1 topgun M Staples 18%

Here’s the Worst Case scenario… Take a couple of tries in New York, then head out to some lesser tracks and win four straight, the last two being minor stakes races. Then grab the services of a high-percentage rider and take on Grade II company at a big track. Will this work? The CPU oddsmaker says “no”, but I’d say he’s at least got a better chance than me ever eating a case of liverwurst…

5) LUKAS ON THE WAY(KY) 29/1 joe333 L Allen 11%

Will the undefeated record of this son of promising freshman sire Silent Name go down the DWayne? Hard to say… He’s done nothing wrong so far, but he’s stepping up in class and adding a furlong in distance. Unlikely, but not impossible.

6) SHOE MILE(KY) 11/1 drysdale J Fraser 6%

Here’s a colt for the well-heeled Sim viewer… His owners will be fit to be tied if they can get this win. He’s had one try at this track, a 4th in a small stakes races at 6.5 furlongs. He improved somewhat in his next race, an allowance at this distance. More improvement is likely to be needed from this son of Aragorn in order to contend today.

7) A SMARTER STRIKE(KY) 6/1 sisi C Mecklenburg 11%

Proving to be a more intelligent way to bowl, this colt hasn’t thrown a gutterball yet in his four tries. In his last, around 2 turns, he got nipped at the wire in a fast time after leading the way down the lane. If he times his run well here, he might be in the frame at the wire. All of his runs have been at Kentucky… can he travel and still bowl his best game?

8) GHOSTGOLD(KY) 6/1 polandfarm O Brim 10%

This one should be in the haunt today… He was just one stride short in his last, just missing vs. a large and talented field in a Smackdown stakes. His style suits the race here, and it’s hard to argue with his bloodlines. Note: the #6 and #7 colts in this race are from the same stable group… Very nice job by the “No Do Claima’s” trainers to get a pair of 2yo’s this good!

9) BENCH DANCER(CA) 12/1 newvictory R Simcox 8%

This guy has waltzed to victory in three races so far, mostly against small fields; let’s see if he can raise the barre and compete against a bunch of jitterbuggers like these! The CPU oddsmaker doesn’t totally dismiss the possibility…

10) AFFIRMED DESTINY(FL) 10/1 jmsstable L Jones 10%

Here’s an interesting one… Son of an obscure Florida sire, and a Sim Rarity… No inbreeding for 5 generations showing! Hasn’t beaten much in Indiana, but that 85 jumps off the page at ya. Who knows how good THIS one could be? Not me… He could be anything from dead last to a runaway winner today.

Hmm… If he eventually goes the “she-male” route and breeds… Destiny’s Child?

11) THOR’S ODYSSEY(KY) 9/2 aaafarms P Incay 15%

The undefeated favorite tries to bring the hammer down… Okay, now my eyes are thor after reading THAT one! Odin’t I say the puns were gonna get bad? Heck, this horse even won a race at Norse Florida!

Anywayyyy… While this colt deserves the hype he’s been getting in the local press, it should be pointed out that he hasn’t exactly beaten any established stars. However, he’s been pretty spectacular while mowing down whatever lines up in the gate with him!

12) PRAGMATISM(KY) 11/1 veeman3 N Bonus 8%

Hard to write a lot of fascinating inside information about a colt with one lifetime start… Guess I’m kinda pragmatic about it (sorry, that’s the best I could do!). Still, that one start was a solid performance, a nose victory at just 5 furlongs for the well-bred Elusive Quality colt. His connections would probably be more comfortable with a higher-percentage rider.

13) WESTSIDE STAR(JPN) 20/1 petermich F Ford 8%

This nicely-bred War Emblem colt will need to improve greatly on his single stakes try in order to stay away from being the backside star of the pack in this tough spot.

These inexperienced babies are tough to handicap, but here goes… My semi-fearless prediction: 3-8-11-1

Good racing, and may they all be winners! (except those that face mine, of course!)

[2

post-6493","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-previews
["GET
