A field of 14 youngsters go post ward looking for Grade 1 glory in California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Amir\u2019s Immortality Medium (#10, 9-1) comes in off a very good second in the Breeders\u2019 Bowl Juvenile. The gelded son of Nadal charged home to finish second while earning a field high speed badge of 103. This is one of the fastest numbers by any juvenile this season. Medium was doing just fine sprinting this spring and on July 1st<\/sup> won the Grade 1 Independence Day Stakes in Vermont. But what\u2019s most impressive is the switch to route races and the change of tactics which see this horse settling and running late with high energy. A narrowly beaten 3rd<\/sup> in the North Fork and the close second in the BB juvy have the connections of this gelding thinking he could be special. A duplicate of his 103 number could have them all running for second place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The colt everyone will take a second-look at is USCSteve\u2019s Mo\u2019s Hope (#13, 7-1). The Uncle Mo colt from a Seeking the Gold mare was untouchable sprinting winning all four races. When sent a mile in New York\u2019s Nashua in late October the colt sat nicely before moving on the final bend. He was tackled late by the rally of Super Bowl Tickets and he was game to the wire only losing by a half-length to a colt he will meet again in here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One of the most experienced and most accomplished juveniles in the race is Theatrical\u2019s Vyzi Neon (#8, 8-1). This gelded son of Handsome Franco from a Stakes winning Tapit mare, Outback Neon, has 5 wins from 7 starts and has never missed the board. After winning the Grade 2 Stanford in July the gelding came right back to score in a Canadian stakes event. When pushed farther in his latest against Grade 3 competition this guy responded like something special. Allowed to settle early he made a powerful run late and won by almost two. His speed badge of 99 is one of the best in the field and deserves lots of respect against this spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This son of Tapit, Tapit Niner (#6, 10-1) gets a class test, but has shown he belongs. He has won all three of his races in stalk and pounce style, with improving speed figures. The Kentucky bred from Harrylan Racing earned a new speed badge of 95 last time out in the Cornfield County. He\u2019s won beyond a mile twice and arrives in California ready to show his best stuff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Summerset\u2019s Maximum Energy (#5, 13-1) was beaten in the Cornstalk last out, but he was running on late in the mile and earned a new speed badge of 97. He had won three sprints in-a-row heading into his Grade 3 Cornstalk test. Two back he won a Stakes race in Canada going away. His breeding, Maximum Security from a Ghostzapper mare, indicate better things ahead. He arrives off a 7-week training preparation for a high percentage barn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Malak Romsey (#9, 12-1) a beautifully bred colt has raced four times and won his last two starts. He has shown different tactics in both races. Two back he was rated and moved strongly late to win going away. Last time out in a Stakes event, he sat beside the speed and took over when ready, again winning going away. The colt from Tulloch Racing does need to take a step forward speed wise. But his numbers are improving, his pedigree will help and he\u2019s in sharp form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Teacherlay\u2019s Insomniac Toddler (#7, 13-1) is bred to stretch out to 8.5 furlongs and beyond, and has every right to love his first route race. His sire has already bred a Travelers Stakes winner! The chestnut son of Lexitonian has been rallying from the back in recent races. Two back he won a Grade 2 event right here in California taking a new speed badge of 93. Last time out he was a bit one-paced in the Grade 2 Big Hill. In this two-turn route race with loads of speed he should get a suitable set-up if good enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jwsonny\u2019s Runaway Sinner (#4, 15-1) got sharp during the summer when scoring in the Adopt Me Stakes to earn a new speed badge of 95. However, last time out he was flat during the Grade 1 Sparkling Wine when 3rd<\/sup>. The chestnut colt by Hard Spun fits on class and speed and is able to stay close to any pace. He will need to finish off his race better this time. He gets loads of stamina from his dam Runaway Aly who is a daughter of Drosselmeyer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Drukenjockclub brings a gelded son of I\u2019m Steppin It Up, Vyzi Ruthless (#3, 8-1), to California for this big juvenile test. He\u2019s been raced at a mile for his last three starts suggesting plenty of stamina is being baked into the Maryland bred. He\u2019s been attending the pace and two back moved powerfully through the lane to score by over two lengths in a NW3L Ontario allowance tilt. Last time in Texas he sat just back of the speed and wore them down late to bag his first Stakes victory and improve his speed badge to a 97. This one-time claimer has great form and should be prominent early and late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Denovo\u2019s Showcalchro (#11, 16-1) is a four-time winner with a Grade 2 Stakes win sprinting on his resume. The son of California Chrome spent the summer in New York and won two-in-a-row which included his rallying win in the Upper New York Stakes. His speed badge that day was a 90 and the worrying part of his story is he left New York and ran a Stakes at this 8.5 panel distance. While he won his speed figure was slower. A high percentage barn takes aim at this prize with an in-form colt who spent almost two months prepping. Lots to like if you ignore the speed numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A War Front gelding, The Falling Tide (#14, 8-1), stayed in California after his less-than-ideal race in the Breeders\u2019 Bowl Juvenile. He was a late entrant into the Movieland as his connections were obviously looking for all the positive signs after his 13th<\/sup> in the BB Juvy. His sprint races were good but he often left you wanting more and with his pedigree the task of going longer was a no-brainer. Two back he ran off with the Grade 3 Cryogenics in Arizona and he earned a very nice speed badge of 96. It allowed him into the big BB dance which he attended the pace but faltered. Watch for Beerkeg to have this one ready to give a better performance Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Another late entrant into the Movieland is from the Stockswami Barn, Curlin Song Cat (#12, 8-1). This chestnut colt has done everything correct. Every race is improving in speed and lengthening in distance. The royally bred colt, Curlin X Storm Cat X Unbridled\u2019s Song, would be a dream in any barn. He started his career with 2 wins from 4 starts before winning at a mile in the Grade 3 Darling Squash in Illinois. He came from the back to roll through the lane and win with ease. Last time out in the Breeders\u2019 Bowl Juvenile he again rallied from the back but could only finish 6th<\/sup> while earning a new speed badge of 97. The long season hasn\u2019t taken a toll and he should still be improving and loving the slightly easier company this race affords.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Speaking of Super Bowl Tickets (#2, 10-1), the colt by West Coast from the Graded stakes winning mare Ungettable. He was always charging hard at the end of his races and coming up short. Corza and crew couldn\u2019t wait to get this bay colt into the longer races. Two back when sent a mile for the first time the colt was a hard-charging 4th<\/sup> behind The Falling Tide. Undaunted and probably very happy with this effort the connections came into the Grade 3 Nashua feeling good. In this late October New York race this colt lagged far back early and then surged late to win by a half. But it\u2019s the big speed badge of 101 which has everyone talking. Sunday the added distance can only help this powerful colt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The second juvenile from the Beerkeg Barn is Fix\u2019n to Break (#1, 11-1). A gelded son of Curlin from a Danzig mare, he was scuffling around earlier this season. Beerkeg expertly gave him most of the summer off and he was a new man upon return. A romping allowance win at his home track in Ontario led to a stakes victory last time out in the Lovely Sheep when he took a new speed badge of 97. He seems very coachable and will respond to his jockey in any scenario.
