Last Sunday, 20th August, was a fairly typical day of racing in the leafy English county of Berkshire. There was the usual mix of Allowance, Starter Allowance, Claiming and Maiden races, nothing out of the ordinary. However, when a Stewards’ Inquiry was called following the Local Bred Allowance race, run as race ID3160627, attention was drawn to the poor running of the favourite Friccion, who is trained by brigantes, a subsidiary of the ukwoman stable.

The favourite was soon restrained and continued to race towards the rear of the field, making little or no headway throughout the race, even when in a position to do so, finishing a well-beaten tenth out of the eleven runners.

As the trainer in charge, ukwoman issued a statement, saying, “Concerning the running of my horse, Friccion,, who runs for my subsidiary stable brigantes, I can say that the instructions given to my jockey were to sit in mid-division and go for it on the turn for home. The effort was to be 100%. I did not instruct my jockey to sit at the back of the field and do nothing.”

There was a question concerning the fact that Friccion was the favourite, despite there being other runners with better form. “Personally I would have sent U B Hopping off as the favourite,” said ukwoman, referring to the second favourite and winner who was trained by larksfarms6, a subsidiary of Bigrick stables. Ukwoman denies any involvement in gambling and strongly denies that her stables have anything untoward to do with the poor running of their horse.

Following the race, a routine dope test was taken from the beaten favourite, which showed nothing untoward. He was examined by the vet and found to be completely sound and with nothing of any concern. The trainer reported that he returned from the race “ready to go”.
