The seventh running of the Grade II Rippleschip Stakes has attracted its second largest field and some of the best trainers in the world.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Twelve three-year-old fillies get to stretch out to a mile and a half on the turf.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>For most of the field, this is their first try going this long.<\/P>

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/P>

Winning the Rippleschip has been a good omen for most of its past winners \u2013 all have gone on to win more stakes races, and half have gone on to win more graded stakes.<\/P>

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/P>

There are as many unknowns in a race like this as there are in handicapping a two-year-old race this time of year.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>So many of these young runners are just coming into their own, and it\u2019s hard to say how they\u2019ll handle the class and the distance.<\/P>

Here is a look at the field:<\/P>

PP 1 CRIMSON REGRET(SAF) <\/STRONG><\/SPAN>(WOLFHOUND x IN THE WINGS(GB) x GENERAL MEETING) bred and trained by icbomber7<\/I><\/B> (The Danby Road Connection, 11%) Odds: 10-1<\/P>

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/P>

Modestly bred filly steps up after a pair of seconds in overnights.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Both races had pretty strong fields, and the fillies she lost to are both graded winners.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>There\u2019s not much to say about Wolfhound.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>The bulk of his offsprings\u2019 winnings have come in routes, though it\u2019s hard to find one that has even run a race this long.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Crimson is an even runner, lightly raced and improving.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>She\u2019d be a surprise but only a mild one.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>High percentage connections are doing their best work here.<\/P>

PP 2 XTRA PLATINUM(KY) <\/STRONG><\/SPAN>(BERNARDINI x DEPUTY MINISTER x MR. PROSPECTOR) bred and trained by ejdstable<\/I><\/B> (Ejdstable Stable, 21%) Odds: 9-2*<\/P>

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/P>

While several in here have gone 11 furlongs, Xtra is one of only three to have raced this far.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>She was second against an average overnight field two races back, and then hit a triple digit figure in her graded debut last time, earning her favoritism today.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Her last two races showed improved speed figures, but they came on off tracks.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>It\u2019s up to you to decide if improvement came from maturity or from the track conditions.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Trainer is one of the best in the Sim.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Bernadini is only into his second crop, so there\u2019s not much to go on, other than that he is out of A.P. Indy, and that\u2019s good news.<\/P>

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/P>

PP 3 ACETELYNE(KY) <\/STRONG><\/SPAN>(A.P. INDY x SADLER’S WELLS x BUCKPASSER) bred and trained by arse2007<\/I><\/B> (Black Label Stables, 20%) Odds: 20-1<\/P>

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/P>

Speaking of A.P. Indy, this daughter of his makes an ambitious climb in class here.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>While impeccably bred, she has yet to crack a 90 speed figure or even enter an unrestricted overnight stakes before this.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>She\u2019s also been facing smaller fields than this.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>She should contribute some to the early going.<\/P>

PP 4 MAKING SILVER(KY) <\/STRONG><\/SPAN>(SILVER DEPUTY x EMPIRE MAKER x STORM CAT) bred and trained by cheyenne15<\/I><\/B> (Demoney Racing Stables, 7%) Odds: 15-1<\/P>

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/P>

Silver\u2019s best race came two starts ago in a Grade III dirt sprint.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>She tried a restricted race at today\u2019s distance last time, and her connections are hoping the terrible performance was due to the off track.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>She will likely enjoy getting two races in a row on the same surface, though this might not be the best surface.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Silver Deputy\u2019s get have had limited success on grass and a longer races.<\/P>

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/P>

PP 5 DANGEROUS WATERS(KY) <\/STRONG><\/SPAN>(A.P. INDY x NORTHERN DANCER x BUCKPASSER) bred and trained by billiam40<\/I><\/B> (Willyam13 Stables, 12%) Odds: 6-1<\/P>

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/P>

Our second A.P. Indy filly, Waters looks quite dangerous here.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Her 102 figure last time in the Grade III Filly Bonanza leads the field.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>And the filly that nosed her out for the win has gone on to win another Graded stakes.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>She will be coming from far off the pace, and that style has worked before in the Rippleschip.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>The biggest question for her to answer is whether she can handle the distance.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Her longest previous race was only nine furlongs.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>If you think she\u2019ll take to the distance, she\u2019s an overlay at 6-1.<\/P>

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/P>

PP 6 XXX RATED(KY) <\/STRONG><\/SPAN>(UNBRIDLED’S SONG x KINGMAMBO x NORTHERN DANCER) bred by lenny11 <\/I><\/B>and trained by lenny14<\/I><\/B> (The Evil Empire, 22%) Odds: 6-1<\/P>

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/P>

A betting angle I like is when a horse runs with an entirely different style in its last outing.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>XXX departed from her come-from-behind style to wire the field last time in her first stakes and her first long race.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>I have no idea if this is a viable angle in the Sim, and the overnight field she beat was not strong, but she showed she can handle the distance; she showed she can handle stakes; and she showed versatility.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>There is precedence for Unbridled\u2019s Song to produce a marathon turfer.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>I liked when the track announcer two races back made what sounded like a stuttering \u201ck\u201d when trying to pronounce her name.<\/P>

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/P>

PP 7 THE XMAS SPIRIT(IRE) <\/STRONG><\/SPAN>(HIGH CHAPARRAL (IRE) x KRIS S. x CARO(IRE)) bred and trained by shamran<\/I><\/B> (Shamran Stables, 12%) Odds: 13-1<\/P>

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/P>

Shamran changed his picture on the stable page from the nice looking young man to something more\u2026.more what? Let\u2019s say goofy for now.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>A case can be made that entering this filly in this race is goofy.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Her figures are well below several others in here, and she\u2019s winless in her two overnight races.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>On the other hand, High Chaparral has had a lot of Sim success with long turfers, and this just may be a crafty move as she gets her first try going this long.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Former figure skater Steffi Graf takes the irons.<\/P>

PP 8 GREEN OASIS(KY) <\/STRONG><\/SPAN>(DEHERE x GREEN<\/st1:PlaceName> DESERT<\/st1:PlaceType><\/st1:place> x SEEKING THE GOLD) bred and trained by michap<\/I><\/B> (Jayjay Stables, 10%) Odds: 9-1<\/P>

She\u2019s been steadily improving, except for her lone start in a graded race, and had the weather turned rainy, she might have been an interesting longshot.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>She\u2019s never run farther than nine furlongs before, and Dehere runners with a lot of success in marathon stakes are pretty rare.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>They are out there, though, and it\u2019s surprising how few runners are ever given the chance at running long.<\/P>

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/P>

PP 9 LEGAL TROUBLE(KY) <\/STRONG><\/SPAN>(COZZENE x UNBRIDLED x CAERLEON) bred and trained by lenny8<\/I><\/B> (The Evil Empire, 20%) Odds: 7-1<\/P>

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/P>

Lenny\u2019s entries are always dangerous, and this one showed marked improvement last time at 11 furlongs.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>She\u2019s still a step or two behind the top ones in here, and although the bulk of Cozzene\u2019s offsprings\u2019 winnings came in turf routes, a quick search for stakes winners at long grass races came up empty.<\/P>

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/P>

PP 10 <\/SPAN>\u00a0<\/SPAN>MOUR OF THE CAFF(IRE) <\/SPAN><\/STRONG>(AZAMOUR (IRE) x DESERT KING (IRE) x GRAND LODGE (IRE)) bred by corka <\/I><\/B>\u00a0<\/SPAN>trained by corzacan<\/I><\/B> (Corza Stables, 10%) Odds: 32-1<\/P>

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/P>

This longest priced filly has tried graded stakes twice before, beating exactly one horse in the process.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>In her defense, she made an eight point improvement in her speed figure last time when she went from 10 furlongs to 11.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>This gives reason to be optimistic that in the long term her best races will come at distances like today\u2019s.\u00a0 <\/SPAN><\/P>

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/P>

PP 11 CAVALIER CHANT(KY) <\/STRONG><\/SPAN>(WAR CHANT x KINGMAMBO x CAERLEON) bred by grandarmee<\/I><\/B>, trained by aggots<\/I><\/B> (Briant Breeding & Racing Empire, 15%) Odds: 7-1<\/P>

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/P>

Two of the past three winners of the Rippleschip had finished in the money in the Grade I Sydney Oaks.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>This filly was second at Sydney<\/st1:place><\/st1:City> to the number one ranked filly.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>(Though of course she\u2019s number one because of that race.)\u00a0 <\/SPAN>She\u2019s had seven weeks\u2019 freshening and gets the top jockey, off to a commanding lead in the Longchamp jockey rankings.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>War Chant has produced many Sim runners who have excelled at marathon distances.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Add to that, this one has a chance to steal the race on the front end.<\/P>

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/P>

PP 12 EMPIRE OF OLD(KY) <\/STRONG><\/SPAN>(EMPIRE MAKER x DANZIG<\/st1:place> x CRAFTY PROSPECTOR) bred and trained by serioli<\/I><\/B> (The Dog Pound, 13%) Odds: 5-1<\/P>

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/P>

The number one rated older distaff long grass horse, Lex Luthor<\/B>, is also by Empire Maker, so that gives Barndog hope with this filly.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>She\u2019s certainly shown a preference for longer races, and she\u2019s the second choice in the morning line after a nice allowance win.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Her lone stakes win came at against three others in a nine furlong Puerto Rican race, so she hasn\u2019t quite enetered Lex Luthor\u2019s league.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Her dam tried the turf twice without success.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Lots to like and lots to question with this one.<\/P>

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/P>

Summary:\u00a0 <\/SPAN><\/B>Historically, the Rippleschip offers few patterns.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>It\u2019s been won wire to wire twice and from well off the pace; it\u2019s been won by a 3-2 favorite last year and by a couple of 12-1 shots.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>So we\u2019re left to handicap on our own.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>We\u2019ll select: Cavalier Chant \/ Xtra Platinum \/ Dangerous Waters<\/B>.<\/P>
