With first time starters, there is no race history to look back upon so the only data we have available is the breeding lines. Here’s the field of ten which includes a trio of fillies.

1. 10/1

SCAN TO WIN (owned by Crawf68)

Prayers for Rain is the game mare for this entrant and she won four times in 41 races during the year. Of this, 11 were on the turf where she won once but was ITM 7 times. Scan to Win is her 13th child and he has Better Than Ready as a sire, and as a dad, his kids won 56% of their starts from the 2022 crop and slightly preferred the dirt over the turf with 58% siding for the soil. The backend seems to have a better pairing to support a grass runner with Zabeel in the DS spot and Barathea residing as the DDS.

2. 3/1

EWC REMEMBERS STEVE (owned by Kashbarn)

Daiwa Major is the sire for this colt and 59% of his offspring that were bred last season have earned wins with 68% favoring the turf. He comes out of game mare Kash Gain who picked up only a pair of wins over 30 races during her career. She has bred five other kids with three turning into allowance winners. The backend for this colt is very solid and loaded with grass ability with Galileo as DS and Kingmambo as DDS, which probably accounts for why the oddsmaker pegged this one as the favorite.

3. 9/2

BAAAEED (owned by Sjmeola)

Baaeed is one of the fillies in this race and sports the pedigree of Baaed x Siyouni x Mr. Prospector. Sire Baaed is a first year sire with four horses who have raced this season but have not found the winners circle. The backend of Siyouni (DS) and Mr. Prospector (DDS) come from her mother, Igetakickoutofyou and this is the first child for the game mare. Igetakickoutofyou won 7 races during her career, which ended in mid-March of this year. She raced 20 times and is a listed stake winner. This could bode favorably for this first time starter who will fight it out with the boys.

4. 6/1

CALEB REDDING (owned by Millerfarm)

This colt is one of several in the field that is a scratchbred. Sire Pierata is a third-year sire in the game and his runners strongly take to the turf with 89% enjoying it. 52% of his horses he sired in 2022 have picked up wins. On the tail end of the pedigree are well known King Kamehama (DS) and Montjeu (DDS) who are nice add-ons in breeding a grass runner. I think the odds may be a bit generous here.

5. 6/1

CHANGE FOR THE BETTER (owned by Neonshadow)

Monterosso, a lightly used sire, had an impressive 89% of his children bred last season finding the turf the surface of choice and 40% of the kids have earned at least one win. Well known Deep Impact resides as the DS with ever-popular Giant’s Causeway in the rear seat as the DDS. Three-time winning Clash of Royalty is the game mare to this colt, who raced 22 times in her career (Side note-she is a daughter to a G2 winner) and has three previously bred children, of which 2 have won in the allowance class. The sire is a bit of a question mark but the backend in the breeding could turn out to be the strong point and give this mare the boost she will need to take down the boys she will battle with.

6. 5/1

EWC MILLER SIX (owned by Cuetec)

Cuetec does not fail to disappoint as the Miller-named horses continue to enter into the Showcase races every year. We have a filly here that was sired by Farnan. Farnan is a second year second year sire who had 56% of her kids last year earn victories and a very strong 98% loving the turf. Added to the DS position is Monsun with Kingmambo rounding out the DDS position, both on high demand by trainers. This gal comes out of game mare Mambo’s Sun who successfully won a dozen races in 61 starts. She has 13 previously bred kids of which two have won listed stake races. A nice looking gal and a win in this race will mean that the next round of drinks will be on Cuetec!

7. 8/1

SHOWSAUNA (owned by Denovo)

Well, the sire Too Darn Hot may fire this filly up as 60% of his 2022 crop have picked up wins and a very strong 86% liking of the turf surface. The backside also favors grass runners with Stay Gold slotted as DS and Fantastic Light as DDS. Light Connection is the game mare to this colt, and she had a successful career winning 10 races in 41 starts, three of these were graded stakes (including a G1 win) and over $1.8 million in earnings. Two other children were born to this mare, one is an allowance winner. The game mare has had a very nice career and if a good chunk of her traits carry over to this filly, she could end up punishing the boys in this field.

8. 11/1

AMBER SPECTACLES (owned by Bobthehat)

This colt is a scratchbred runner which utilized the services of Makfi as the sire. Makfi usually has better success with his kids, but last season, only 38% have picked up wins. They do like the grass to the tune of 88%, still, the winning rate is lower than expected. In The Wings is in the DS spot and as a sire, his kids were closely split between preferring either dirt or grass surface, however, as a DS, the turf is strongly favored at over 70%. Rainbow Quest is a fine selection for the DDS. Concern here is the sire who seemed to run cold last season with her kids. Hopefully that is past history.

9. 7/1

NORTHERN WINGS (owned by Craterus)

Le Havre, the chosen sire for this entered colt, witnessed an impressive 91% of his 2022 bred kids enjoying the turf surface and 41% of them grabbing wins. Northern Wings is a scratchbred, and like the horse adjacent to him in the starting gate (Amber Spectacles) he also has In The Wings as the choice for DS. Niniski is the DDS who has blood ties to Nijinsky 2nd, one of my past favored backend DDS’s to use. Niniski leans towards the grass and this entrant has an ample amount of pedigree built in him to prefer the turf and should put in a decent performance.

10. 186/1

DANBIRD SUN (owned by Brit9)

This steep longshot is a scratchbred runner that was bred out of infrequently used horses. Danbird is in the sire seat and has a 35% win rate from his 2022 crop of children that favored the turf at a 76% rate. The DS spot belongs to Beijing Sun who has only been used six times as a DS but his kids do strongly like the grass. Blu Tsumani takes the final position in the DDS role and also has shown that his children like the turf. Looks like a tough race for this colt but big upsets do occur with first-time, two year-old runners.

My Picks

This is a tougher race to select from than the dirt race and is wide open for the taking. I’m taking Showsauna as my top choice based on the game mare being a multi-grade winner and her skills may pass over into this child.

EWC Miller Six has Kingmambo in the bloodline and I’ve always liked the “King”. Game mare Mambo’s Sun has bred a pair of stake winners which is an added incentive to support this runner.

EWC Remembers Steve is a salute to the remembered Steve Buium and includes not only Kingmambo but also Galileo in the pedigree, both I like. Heck, this is my horse, why should’t I like him. Heck, I hate picking my own horses…this one will finish in last because I picked it.

Good luck to everyone!

The EWC has held Showcase Races for a number of years in which residents can breed a 2 year old

[2

post-61378","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-previews
["GET
