This past weekend in Iowa we witnessed the annual running of the six furlong Ferry Dust Handicap (G3) over the dirt. The race, which was open to fillies and mares of three years age and older, was the fifteenth race on the Saturday racing card. All fourteen of the ladies entered into the race made their way over the dirt track towards the starting gate. The full field of fourteen loaded easily into the starting gate like seasoned pros. When the six furlong race came to an end it was an upset by Little Cat (AUS)<\/b>, owned by nog1<\/i>, in her graded stakes debut.
The five year old chestnut mare came out of the fifth post on Saturday during the Ferry Dust Handicap and went straight to the lead by a half a length in the race with jockey S. Cadigan aboard. The mare led by half a length over Came Wild<\/b>, who is owned and trained by signfeld<\/i> of Stevemunoz Stables. The early favorite in the race, Fleetwood Mia<\/b> broke out of the gate and was held back by jockey O. Paker and placed eleventh on the outside of horses. Along in third early on in the Ferry Dust was the baustista<\/i> trained Cought You<\/b>.
Little Cat (AUS)<\/b> never looked back during the six furlong sprint and continued to lengthen her lead over the fourteen horse field. The mare, in her graded stakes debut went on to win the Ferry Dust Handicap in wire to wire fashion under jockey S. Cadigan and Hawk43 Stables. The chestnut mare recorded a lifetime best speed figure in this race, a one hundred ten. The future is looking bright for the now graded stakes winning mare, who hopefully has many more graded stakes races left in her career, despite being one of the older mares in the field.
Came Wild<\/b> ran along in second throughout the entire race but never could get past the blazing Little Cat (AUS)<\/b>. In the final furlongs of the race Came Wild<\/b> was challenged by pre-race favorite Fleetwood Mia (TUR)<\/b> . The four year old brown mare by Strike The Gold powered past Came Wild<\/b> in the stretch to finish one and one-fourth lengths behind Little Cat (AUS)<\/b> and another length and one-fourth in front of Came Wild<\/b>. After loosing the challenge in the stretch, Came Wild<\/b> with jockey M. Barnes finished third.
