The graded stakes here in Iowa will be run over six furlongs on the outer dirt course and is open to fillies and mares of three years of age or older. Last year’s winner of the Ferry Dust Handicap (G3) was Groomed To Romp T, who is owned by pick6. The five year old daughter of Gone West will not be running again in this year’s Ferry Dust, as she has taken a step down in class and is currently running at the allowance level. The weather here in Iowa has been overcast all week, however, despite the clouds in the sky rain will not be a factor this weekend and will not affect any of the races. The cloudy conditions are expected to continue throughout race day with an average temperature in the middle to high 70 degrees. With the favorable conditions this week for racing on a fast dirt track, the Ferry Dust Handicap has drawn a full field of fourteen fillies to run in the six furlong dirt sprint.
1. Cought You – bautista – M. Irvin – 15/1
Drawing the rail in the full field is this filly (Malibu Moon x Mr. Greeley x Silver Deputy), who is out of the graded placed mare Peak Of Desire. The Kentucky-bred chestnut filly is owned by Clyde6419. The fillies most recent race came earlier this month in Illinois during the six and a half furlong Deed La Stakes. The filly broke out of the sixth post and made a move for the front of the pack, setting off the pace by a length in second. The filly didn’t have enough in the tank at the wire though and finished three and one-fourth lengths back in sixth, while setting a speed figure of one hundred one. The fillies most recent graded start came in June of last year during the six furlong Bob Barker Stakes (G3) where she finished fourth after heading straight to the lead. The filly will be a definite pace factor in all her races, leading the field into the turn or being close to the pace. Her last three posts have resulted with triple digit speed figures.
2. Apples Awesome – profounds – I. Perry – 8/1
In the second post is this bay four year old filly (Awesome Again x Pulpit x Storm Cat), who is out of the graded placed mare Storm Secret. The four year old is raced by Delta Tiger and has just fourteen career starts. Her most recent race came last month in the seven furlong Saturday At Noon II Special in New Mexico. The filly took off out of post position three and was held back by jockey B. Bennington in the twelfth position. She moved forward into eleventh early on but wasn’t urged to go for the front of the pack until the stretch where the filly put on an impressive performance and went on to win the race by a length with a speed figure of one hundred nine. This will be the fillies first attempt at graded stakes competition, though she has recorded triple digit speed figures in four of her five stakes starts. She has finished on the board in all but one of these stakes starts, which came during the B. Hillbilly Memorial where the filly finished sixth, which was also her only stakes start over seven furlongs. The filly will likely be held towards the back of the field on Saturday and make her move in the late stretch.
3. Back Road – plong – M. Taylor – 30/1
Next in the field will be the longshot (Lord Parham x Bob Back x Herculean) of this weekends Ferry Dust Handicap. The West Virginia bred bay filly is currently race by Axe Racing Stables. The fillies most recent start came last month during a short four and a half furlong allowance caliber start across the border in Mexico. The filly broke out of the third post, which is the same post she has drawn this weekend, and ran up towards the front of the pack to settle one and a half lengths back in second. The filly was held off just a length or so off the pace of the leader for the whole race until they came towards the wire where the filly found a spot on the rail and went through to win the race by one-fourth lengths with a speed figure of ninety-two. The filly has never started in a graded stakes race but has started in two listed stakes, both of which were restricted to particular trainers. The most recent of these races was the Paint Brush over six and a half furlongs where the filly won by three-fourths length with a speed figure of one hundred eight. Though a speed horse in her last few races, the filly only has one race in which she set a speed figure of three digits. She most likely won’t get the lead in this race, and will have to be content with sitting just off the pace of the leaders and wait for an opening.
4. Came Wild – signfeld – M. Barnes – 10/1
This chestnut filly (Came Home x Forest Wildcat x Woodman), is next in our field for Saturday. The chestnut filly is out of the stakes placed mare Xylology and is raced by Stevemunoz Stables. Her most recent start came earlier this month in Ne Mexico during the six furlong Corparate Fridge Special where she finished one and one-half lengths back in second after breaking from an outside post and settling just off the pace in third. This Saturday is the fillies first start in a graded stakes race, but she has been very accomplished in her listed stakes starts, finishing on the board in all four of these starts. The filly has five triple digit speed figures so far in her career and has placed on the board in her last two starts, both of which were listed stakes races. Another speed horse in the field, look for this horse to be on or near the pace as the gate opens on Saturday.
5. Little Cat (AUS) – nog1 – S. Cadigan – 14/1
Coming from the land down under and into post number five is this Australian-bred filly (Redoute’s Choice (AUS) x Alannon (AUS) x Storm Cat), who is raced by Hawk43 Stables. The five year old chestnut mare had her most recent start last month in Puerto Rico during the seven and a half furlong Legs In The Air Challenge where the filly won convincingly by two and one-fourth lengths after going wire to wire in the race and setting a speed figure of one hundred three. Her last graded start came in 2006 during the Check My Speed Stakes (G1) over six furlongs where the filly finished eighth after setting off the pace in third out of the gate. With the mare making her graded stakes comback, look for her to be another one that is out on the pace of the race, perhaps settling down somewhere between third and fifth going out of the gate.
6. Doctor Danzig – manon – Ni Williams – 8/1
In the sixth slot for the Ferry Dust Handicap is this five year old mare (Speightstown x Danzig x J.O, Tobin), who is out of the graded placed and stakes producing mare Doctor J.O. The bay mare is raced by Ace Stables – RASH Division. The mare had her most recent start last month in the seven and a half furlong Vixen’s Hulk Handicap in New Hampshire. The mare broke out of an outside gate here and ran mid-pack in sixth, though quickly went on and gained position in the dirt sprint. The mare ended up finishing one and one -fourth lengths back in second, though posting an impressive speed figure of one hundred ten. Her previous race, an allowance caliber race over seven and a half furlongs in New York, resulted in a win and a speed figure of one hundred fifteen. Though this will be the mares first graded stakes start, her running style of staying back in mid-pack early on in the race may be just what she needs to get the jump on the handful of speed horses that will be in the Ferry Dust Handicap this year. Look for this one to lay off the pace in the middle to rear of the field and come roaring towards the middle of the track in the stretch.
7. Elegy – chevrolet – H. Newsome – 8/1
Following in the post will be this bay filly (A.P. Indy x Forty Niner x Danzig), who is out of the stakes placed mare Future Shock Too. The bay four year old filly out of sire of sires A.P. Indy is trained and raced by Chevrolet Stables in its trademark black and white racing silks. Her most recent start came last month in the seven furlong Unthinkable Stakes (G2) where the filly disappointingly finished five and one-fourth lengths back in eighth after setting off the pace in tenth and making a late run in the stretch, which turned out to be a little too late. The filly recorded a speed figure of one hundred six for this race, a figure she has managed to duplicate for her past three stakes starts, all of which have been graded. After the disappointment of last month the filly is headed back down to ungraded stakes company to get back some of her composure. Previous to her eighth place finish the filly has finished on the board in her last eight starts, all of which, for the exception of one, ended with the filly setting triple digit speed figures. She’s another one that likes to lie in wait in the middle or the back of the field, and if she can return to her previous form, could be in contention for some money when the race is all said and done.
8. Fleetwood Mia (TUR) – fleetwood – O. Parker – 5/1
In the middle of the track, loading into post eight will be pre-race favorite filly (Strike The Gold x Seattle Slew x His Majesty), who is out of the stakes placed mare and two time graded stakes producer Seattle Within Sea. The Turkish-bred filly saw her last race against rival Elegy in the Unthinkable Stakes (G3) in New Hampshire. The filly drew the rail in the seven furlong race and was held back early on in the race by jockey P. Haynes and ran in twelfth early on. In the turn the filly had made her way up into eighth and was asked for run in the stretch, setting a lifetime best speed figure of one hundred ten. This filly likes to come from the back of the field and has finished on the board in her last two starts and has recorded triple digit speed figures in her last seven starts.
9. Flumed – aptitude11 – S. Korzerski – 7/1
Following the early favorite loading into the gate is this five year old mare (Gulch x Star De Naskra x Storm Cat). The bay mare is owned and raced by Aptitude11 Stables. Her most recent start came last month during a six furlong allowance caliber start here in Iowa where the bay mare won in a photo after going wire to wire in the race. The mare set a speed figure of one hundred seven for the race. The mare has never started in a graded stakes race before, but has started in three ungraded stakes, the most recent of which was the Jill’s Burn Stakes over six furlongs where the mare finished three-fourth lengths in second after setting a speed figure of one hundred six. The mare has finished on the board in her last six starts, almost all of these being with triple digit speed figures with the exception of an allowance race in Louisiana. This mare will probably like to have the lead leaving the gate on Saturday. She’s proven she can hold on to the lead until the wire, and everyone is anticipating how the mare will take to her first graded stakes start.
10. Woettamour (IRE) – woette5 – G. Daniels – 21/1
At fairly long odds in the Ferry Dust Handicap is this four year old chestnut filly (Azamour (IRE) x Dubai Millennium (GB) x Nijinsky II). The Irish-bred filly is out of the race winning mare Karsavinga (GB) and is currently raced and owned by The Royalstables of Ostend. The fillies most recent start came last month in the District of Columbia during a six furlong allowance caliber sprint. The filly won this race by one and three-fourth lengths after setting just off the pace in third and gradually edging her way up through the field on the outside. The fillies speed figure for this race was a one hundred one. Previous to this the filly also won her prior race, another allowance caliber race over six furlongs. This Saturday’s start in the Ferry Dust Handicap will be the first stakes start of any sort for the four year old chestnut. Though she likes to be just off the pace of the front leaders, I’d look for this filly to be a little further back than normal at the break.
11. Incomprehensible – lionheart – A. Brant – 14/1
Going along in the horses running in the Ferry Dust is this striking dark gray mare (Unbridled’s Song x Storm Cat x Mr. Prospector), who is out of the race winning mare Risk Theory. The five year olds most recent start came last month in Rhode Island during the seven and a half furlong Virginia Charge Memorial. The filly finished somewhat disappointingly in this race, through still managing to get up to finish in the money. The mare broke out of the fifth post position and was held back far in the field in the eleventh position. She wasn’t asked for run until late in the stretch where she came flying down the outside of the track but only managed to finish firth, six and a half lengths off the post with a speed figure of ninety-eight. Her previous start in the Distaff Breeder’s Bowl Cap resulted in a ninth place finish and a speed figure of one hundred four. Prior to this the mare had three straight races in which she finished on the board.
12. Stormy Peg – dundey7 – O. Brooks – 8/1
Next is this filly (Storm Cat x Fusaichi Pegasus x Common Grounds (GB)), who is raced by Dundey Acres. This Kentucky-bred bay four year old has a blue-blooded pedigree, who is out of top sire Storm Cat, who was pensioned earlier this week. The bay filly had her most recent start last month in Jamaica during the Pleasant African Stakes over six furlongs. The filly impressively won this race by one and one-fourth lengths after going wire to wire in the six furlong dirt sprint. She set a speed figure of one hundred ten, a lifetime best speed figure for the race. Previous to this start the filly broke won The New York Stampede (G2) by to lengths with a speed figure of one hundred eight. The filly has been very impressive as of late. In addition to her last two races, she has never finished out of the money in any race during her career. Her only race that resulted in an off the board finish was an eight furlong allowance caliber start last year where she finished fifth. She’s run right on the lead in all but one of her races, so look for her to be possibly setting the pace or being near to it on Saturday.
13. Blackpool Lights (IRE) – greenappl2 – S. Mathis – 7/1
In the lucky thirteen post is this chestnut mare (Giant’s Causeway (IRE) x Sadler’s Wells x Nureyev). The Irish-bred filly is proudly raced and owned by Greenapple Stables. The chestnuts most recent start was last month in the Oliver’s Wish Special over seven an a half furlongs in Eastern Kentucky. The filly broke out of the number ten post in this race and was held just off the pace in fourth by jockey L. Dorchak. She was urged forward to challenge in the turn and quickly made her way up into third and then into the lead in the stretch, eventually winning the race by one and three-fourth lengths with a speed figure of one hundred nine. Her previous race, an allowance caliber race over seven and a half furlongs, also resulted in a win, this with a speed figure of one hundred ten. This filly has not finished out of the money in her last ten starts, when she did, it was in a six and a half furlong allowance race over the turf. Her only graded start came in the Neil Gwyn Stakes over the turf in 2006 where the filly finished fourth.
14. Ruby’s Pride – trauma92 – A. Little – 12/1
On the far outside this filly (Cryptoclearance x Clever Trick x Family Doctor), will be loaded into the gate on Saturday. The bay four year old is out of the race winning mare Ruby Doctor, and is being raced by Keely’s Stables. The bay fillies most recent start came earlier this month in Kentucky during the seven furlong Bluegrass Distaff Sprint (G2). The filly came home under the wire seventh in this race, three lengths back and recording a speed figure of one hundred three after setting just off the speed in fifth. Her most recent victory came a few months before in the Dan’s Dragon Special over six furlongs which she won by one-fourth of a length and set a speed figure of one hundred seven. The filly is still fairly new to the stakes caliber racing scene, but has already finished in the money in two of her three stakes starts.
Sorria’s Picks
Win: Fleetwood Mia (TUR)
Place: Doctor Danzig
Show: Stormy Peg

[2

post-5979","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-previews
["GET
