This week I have another bag of bargain sires. Not all will go for under 200 every week. The term bargain here really is about value. We are looking for value that will hit the board with potential for a fair price. Most of what I call bargains are sires that can be had for 300 or less, and return solid runners. Now let’s get things started with a beautiful Chestnut horse by the name of Pure Prize.

Pure Prize (Storm Cat x Seeking the Gold x Stormbird)

Bio: Pure Prize stands at Vinery LTD in Kentucky with a stud fee of $12,500. Thankfully for all of us we have the sim. That means we can breed Pure Prize very cheaply, and Pure Prize is no slouch. If you watched this year’s Kentucky Oaks then you have seen the magic Pure Prize is capable of creating. Sloppy conditions didn’t slow Pure Clan, as the three year old filly charged to third in the Oaks. Pure Clan is one of many success stories for Pure Prize. Pure Clan has finished third or better in seven career starts. Pure Prize’s career may have been nothing legendary with 17 career starts, 12 ITM finishes, and 475,479 career earnings, but Pure Prize has certainly been an effective sire. Just look at the 2007 record for Pure Prize horses which had seven stakes wins, and 14 stakes placed. Now that is not bad at all!

2008 in the SIM:
Runners/wins 13/5
Win% 38.5%
$/runner $8,698

Breeding Suggestions:

DS: Try some Slew or something from the Mr. P. line. Give Alydar a shot if you feel like spending. Alysheba, Saratoga Six, Easy Goer, Blushing Groom, Ninjinsky II, Private Account, Rahy, or Alleged may all work well. Try Pure Prize at DS with last weeks featured first year sire Seeking the Best! Many of these options have not been overly exploited in the sim, and some not at all.

DDS: Try Graustark, Tom Rolfe, Key to the Mint, Sauce Boat, or Pleasant Colony. Try mixing and matching some of the DS suggestions above on the back end.

SIM 2 Year Old:
Otis Taylor the sim owner not the football player has a nice two year old chestnut colt prospect named Pure Smoke who broke maiden’s first time out with a 63 speed rating. Pure Smoke is Pure Prize x Pulpit x Alydar. I am sure Otis can’t wait to see what the colt does in his second start. Otis is an up and coming talent in the sim. He has some nice runners this year, one in particular that I admire has some Giant’s Causeway blood.

Ivory Touch (Storm Cat x Seeking the Gold x Stormbird)

Bio: Notice the breeding? Yup, this first year sire is the all new version of Pure Prize. Unfortunately after extensive research all I can gather is that Ivory Touch stands in Indiana. I believe Ivory Touch was unraced. Nonetheless Ivory Touch has the pedigree of Pure Prize and may make a nice sire. DI is 3.89 and CD = .95

2008 in the SIM:
Runners/wins 17/4
Win% 23.5%
$/runner $6,578
Has been sprinty and favored dirt thus far much like Pure Prize has been in recent years.

Breeding Suggestions: Take a look at what has worked with Pure Prize, and try some of the above suggestions. If you look at Ivory Touch so far, there really is a lot of great options here that have not been tried. Now is a great time to breed a nice horse from Ivory Touch.

SIM 2 Year Old: Urko’s Touch from Urko stables broke maidens second time out with a 80 speed rating. Urko threw a good dosage of ND at Ivory Touch with Sadler’s Wells at DS, and added Spinning World at DDS.

Scat Daddy (Johannesburg x Mr. Prospector x Hennessey)

Bio: This first year sire won grade 1 Belmont Champagne Stakes at age 2. At age three Won grade 1 Gulf Stream Park Florida Derby, and also won grade II Fountain of Youth Stakes. Had 9 career starts with five of those wins, seven total ITM. Scat Daddy had a whopping $1,344,300 career earnings.

2008 in the SIM:
Runners/wins 27/3
Win% 11.1%
$/runner $8,134
So far Scat shows an overwhelming affinity for dirt. I suspect Scat Daddy will be best used for sprinters. Scat Daddy has been getting a lot of nice horses thrown at him, but last I checked this week he was still on the board in the 300’s for credits. Scat Daddy should be excellent for breeding fast flying two year old sprinters.

Breeding Suggestions: I love Dixieland Band going to Scat Daddy for a nice balance of ND. Red Ransom could be a nice choice. Try Halo lines. Quiet American should provide just the right amount of inbreeding with Mr. P. blood. Affirmed and Alydar options are good. I wouldn’t mind doing Scat Daddy x Quiet American x Halo myself. I look forward to following that last suggestion. I figure someone’s got to breed it, because it just looks soooo good on paper.

SIM 2 Year Old: Paceman2 had the right idea breeding Scat Nine (Scat Daddy x Forty Niner x Storm Cat). Scat Nine already has two big wins with speed ratings of 75, and 80, and should continue to have great success with the two year old.

Golden Missile (A.P. Indy x Cure the Blues x Seattle Slew)

Bio: Golden Missile has 12 stakes ITM in 25 starts with 18 total ITM finishes in those 25 starts. With career earnings of $2,194,510 Golden Missile was now slouch of a runner. Golden Missile has 4 racing crops with 110 winners, 15 stakes runners, and $7 million in earnings.

2008 in the SIM:
Runners/wins 18/5
Win% 27.8%
$/runner $4,603
Golden Missile has favored dirt heavily.

Breeding Suggestions:
Mr. Prospector lines work excellent with Golden Missile like Fappiano, Forty Niner, Seeking the Gold, Machiavellian, Afleet, Silver Ghost, or Quiet American. Alydar works well. Also try Nijinsky II, Danzig, Dixieland Band, El Gran Senor, Clever Trick, Cox’s Ridge, Roberto, Kris S., Pleasant Colony, Hoist the Flag, In Reality, Relaunch, Bold Ruler, and Buckpasser. General Assembly could be interesting with the 3×4 Secretariat.

SIM 2 Year Old: War Surge (Golden Missile x Distorted Humor x Storm Cat) bred by stable owner bold ruler looked really good first time out in the slop running six furlongs with a 69 speed rating to finish 2nd first time out. The breeding here is obviously exquisite. With a name like War Surge I sure as heck am a big fan. I looked forward to keeping an eye on War Surge and all the fine runners in this article.

References
www.milferfarms.com
www.lanesend.com
www.bloodhorse.com
www.vinery.com
www.coolmore.com
www.pedigreequery.com

[5

post-5976","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-breeding
["GET
